laytonl Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 Has anyone gone to the trouble to develop a takeoff distance calculator for a J? Running several scenarios on those performance charts is a pain. Lee Quote
PaulB Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 Attached is an HTML file that does all the calculations along with weight and balance. I wish I could take credit for it but I found it on here on an old post. I modified it a little to calculate density altitude and a few other things. Open it up and edit the top of the file to adapt it for your plane. If you need any help doing this let me know. Takeoff Calculator v4.0.html Quote
PaulB Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 Found the original post. Looks like Bob - S50 was the original author. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/8475-takeoff-and-landing-calcs/ Quote
Piloto Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 Low tire inflation, runway type (dirt vs. concrete) and uphill runway slope will also affect the takeoff performance. José Quote
cbarry Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 You might want to take a look at "Takeoff Calculator" by Randy Gawer which is an application for I products. Quote
Mooneymite Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 Pilato makes a good point that there are a lot of variables in take-off computations. I fly off of grass and can verify that the length and thickness of the grass makes a significant difference in the takeoff roll! Years ago, I got a self contained Take-off performance "computer". It needs neither AC, nor DC since it is essentailly a slide rule. I really haven't used it much since none of the airports I use are marginal, but it is a simple contraption that corrects your raw take-off number for runway surface type, pressure altitude, runway slope and wind. Perhaps these things are "old hat" to most of you, but I've never seen one in a store. http://aviaids.com/ Quote
PaulB Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 Yeah the calculator I posted isn't perfect but I only fly on paved surfaces and always give myself a a safety margin. It probably wouldn't be hard to modify it to add grass and and slope. Just not worth it to me. The weight and balance part is probably just as useful. Really makes calculating W&B a 10 second affair. laytonl Posted July 30, 2014 Author Report Posted July 30, 2014 Thanks guys, the HTML file helps. I will need to adjust it for an MSE and add distance to clear 50' too. Otherwise, this is perfect. I'm flying off of a 3,000 grass strip that is a one-way strip. This past weekend we had a 10 kt tailwind which caused me to drag out the charts. From the data points I've collected so far, flying off of freshly cut grass adds about 10% to the takeoff roll. Long grass is significantly more. Lee Quote
Bob - S50 Posted July 30, 2014 Report Posted July 30, 2014 Just so you'll know, that file was based on the POH of a '78 J. It will probably be pretty close for any other J that uses the IO360. Anything other than the J though would be totally wrong. Bob Quote
BillC Posted July 30, 2014 Report Posted July 30, 2014 Excellent calculator Bob and PaulB. Thank you. Bill Quote
Hansjoerg Posted June 29, 2024 Report Posted June 29, 2024 is anyone here with programmingskills? i found a very good takeoff calculator for piper and cessna. maybee somebody know how to add mooney to the portfolio: https://pohperformance.com/index.html Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted June 29, 2024 Report Posted June 29, 2024 Send a message to ForeFlight and request it as a feature. They seem to act on good suggestions. Quote
exM20K Posted June 29, 2024 Report Posted June 29, 2024 Foreflight already does that for a lot of airframes with a "Performance Plus" subscription https://foreflight.com/products/performance-directory/#/ 3 Quote
WilliamR Posted July 1, 2024 Report Posted July 1, 2024 You mean like the app Patrick developed? Quote

Pinecone Posted July 2, 2024 Report Posted July 2, 2024 Best would be an app for phone, so it is always handy Quote

ForeFlight already has Takeoff Performance. If your plane is not in there, then send them the POH info and they should add it. (I think it takes a while, but have heard they will eventually get it done.) Quote
hammdo Posted July 2, 2024 Report Posted July 2, 2024 I add a correction factor of 30% as my plane is not new ;o) on really hot days, 50%. -Don Quote
