Guitarmaster Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 For those that have done this mod, is it worth the money? Do you see any increase in speed, cooling or any other advantages? Thanks in advance! Matt Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Guitarmaster Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 I should've mentioned that it is a 75 F model with no other modifications. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
KSMooniac Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Everything I've read is positive...helps mostly with cooling (which is needed) and a little bit with speed. I think it helps cosmetically as well. Also consider the ARI mod, which almost resembles a 201 and requires a 201 spinner to replace the stock F spinner. More work and more expense, but better performance and cosmetics. Quote
Marauder Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 I have the cowl enclosure on a 1975 F, a few serial numbers from yours. I gained a 4 knots in speed and had a better cooling profile than before it was done. What I mean by a cooling profile is that my cylinder temps are a lot more uniform. The fronts would run a bit warmer before. Quote
Andy95W Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Over two Mooneys, my experience has been that the following 4 mods will get you the best bang for your buck (mph per $): 1.) get rid of unneeded antennas 2.) rig properly by someone who knows what he's doing 3.) cowling closure 4.) flap gap seals BTW, I have also found better cooling withmthe cowl closure and better rate of climb with the flap gap seals. IMO, my 64 C looks good with the cowl closure, but your F may look better with the ARI - but then you'll want the 201 windshield. And dorsal fin. And tail root fairings. And wingtips 1 Quote

Guitarmaster Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 Thanks for the replies! Chris.. That's a good lookin' airplane and you can definitely tell ours are sisters. . I am laughing right now because someone a while back said you should not name your plane or you will be spending $$$ in mods. I saw that post a little late so now Riley HAS to have her mods! The ADF antenna will be gone shortly. I know the rigging is off. With the right aileron even with the flap the left one sits down at least a couple of degrees. Does anyone have a recommendation in IL, WI to do rigging? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Marauder Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Us late model F guys need to stick together. The early Fs don't like us because we don't have a Johnson bar sitting in the middle of our cock pit. And the J guys think we are wannabes.. I love my F and have for 23 years. She ain't the fastest, or the prettiest, but she is all mine! Post some pics. My "Vic" would like to see what Riley looks like. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 3 Quote

MB65E Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 KS-lol. There are a few people on here from that area that could help out... Scary what most shops charge these days, but there is some great talent available still. I have a great friend thats a good IA that way that might be able to help out... -Matt Quote
N601RX Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I had tried to order the ARI cowl about 2 months ago and couldn't get anyone to answer my emails. A couple of weeks later I came across a good deal on a real 201 cowl and other necessary parts for the conversion. It's going to be a lot more work than the other cowl mods, but will be worth it when I'm finished. 1 Quote
