DonMuncy Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 Planning a trip to NJ on Friday the 11th. It looks like Blairstown is the nearest airport to my ultimate destination. Anyone familiar with 1N7. Anything I should know, or watch out for. Quote
PTK Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 Be on the alert for possible glider activity to the south of the runway. Don, if your schedule permits drop into VAY. Let me know and I'll meet you there. Lunch is on me! Quote

201er Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 Don't fly in at night or ceilings below 1500ft. Hills and poorly visible if you're unfamiliar. Plan to come in a bit high to clear hills and trees and use the entire runway. No FBO service available, park and fuel on your own. But otherwise it's good and easy. Quote
carusoam Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 The small lunch counter was nice when we were there last. I am unfamiliar with their operation, check hours in advance. They definitely have more trees and hills than the rest of NJ. Best regards, -a- Quote
DonMuncy Posted July 7, 2014 Author Report Posted July 7, 2014 PTK, thanks for the invite. This is a family deal (my wife's brother), in Columbia NJ, so there probably won't be time for a side trip. Thanks to others. Would Stroudsburg Ponoco be a better choice. Quote

If you don't mind driving a little longer you may consider KABE. It's about 30 miles from Columbia, NJ but offfers ILS and GPS approaches. Quote
201er Posted July 8, 2014 Report Posted July 8, 2014 You're welcome Don. That's the closest probably but its out in the sticks. No approaches really. If you don't mind driving a little longer you may consider KABE. It's about 30 miles from Columbia, NJ but offfers ILS and GPS approaches. I wouldn't bother with KABE unless things were socked in badly. That's just something to file as an alternate. MPO is out in the middle of nowhere. Blairstown is a good bet, just be careful about high terrain. You want marginal VFR or better. No hard IFR into there. Quote
PTK Posted July 8, 2014 Report Posted July 8, 2014 Hey Mike, if the first airport of intended landing does not have an IAP, as is the case with 1N7, then an alternate is required regardless of wx. Agree? Also the forecast wx at the alternate at the ETA must be better than the published approach minima or standard 600/2 or 800/2. Agree? Why are you suggesting to the gentleman an airport out in the sticks when there's KABE literally next door? And do you feel being literally next door it's appropriate as an alternate if the weather is "socked in badly" as you put it at the first airport of intended landing? I don't see your logic Mike! Pete - you not paying Garmin to keep your database up to date? 1N7 has 3 approaches. Two GPS and a VOR. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Marauder Posted July 8, 2014 Report Posted July 8, 2014 Hey Mike, if the first airport of intended landing does not have an IAP, as is the case with 1N7, then an alternate is required regardless of wx. Agree? No precision approaches Chris. Peter, Peter, Peter -- being a Garmin owner should have taught one thing; being precise... specifically in your communication. You indicated that 1N7 has no approaches and would require an alternate -- which is not quite a precise answer. Why heck, my Garmin Pilot quickly ascertained that there were indeed approaches. And as Mike points out, you will want decent weather if not some sort of VMC to exist if you want to shoot them. If 1N7 were the closest airport to my destination and the weather cooperated, I would file 1N7, list KABE as my alternate. Quote
PTK Posted July 8, 2014 Report Posted July 8, 2014 If the wx cooperated I agree Chris. If the wx doesn't cooperate it depends. That's my point! 1 Quote
jrm356 Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 I was there (1N7) on Sunday (July 6th). The power was out, so while they had fuel, there was no way to pump it. No one knew when it would be coming back on or why it was out. The gliders were getting towed from the grass to the left of 25 (the active runway that day). They cross the taxiiway during the takeoff roll. I flew to Stroudsburg for fuel (have to climb over a ridge to get there). The displaced threshold on 26 is pretty long, and the arrows are very faint. The first part of the runway is ok, but gets bumpy after about 1200 feet. There looks to be a lot of skydiving there, I waited for 12 to come down (a Super Otter's worth of divers) before starting back up after refueling. Quote
PTK Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 It's out in the sticks! Not ready for prime time! Partly why I suggested KABE to Don. So close to his destination with all the services. I would make KABE my destination not alternate in this case! Personally when I fly my family across the country I prefer to land at a first class airport. Especially if its so close to my destination. Not in the boondocks somewhere not knowing what to expect! Quote

Where's your sense of adventure? 1 Quote
bnicolette Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 I have to jump in on this one too. I would prefer ABE to 1N7 especially when traveling with others. Of course I like to have everything set up and ready to go for my arrival. ABE would allow entry regardless of weather with no worries or having two sets of arrangements. 1 Quote
DonMuncy Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 Thanks to all responders. With availability of rent cars, adjusting for family plans etc., it looks as though I will be going to Morristown (MMU). Closer to Mike and Keli than anyone else it seems. Quote

Why didn't you say so in the first place?! Safe travels! Quote
carusoam Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 That's a full service kind of place! They even have departure procedures. Best regards, -a- Quote
201er Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I'm in Canada! When are you coming? We may just host a Mooney fly in at Blairstown while you're in. Quote
DonMuncy Posted July 10, 2014 Author Report Posted July 10, 2014 I plan on arriving in NJ Friday afternoon. Staying in Columbia until the next Wednesday. But as per my previous post, it looks like I will be going into MMU. Quote
carusoam Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 KMMU has some funky charges like landing fees that were reported here earlier. Making a fly-in destination challenging... As usual, call in advance for real details... Best regards, -a- Quote
