Time for a new IPAD

today while i was at the airport I was getting a few things out of my truck and I knocked my IPAD off the seat and on to the ramp, Of course it opened up from it's case and landed directly on the face shattering the glass. I hadn't intended to replace it any time soon but it looks like I need to decide if i want to replace it with an IPAD air or mini. any inputs would be appreciated

In any case, I would recommand you getting a ZAGG ipad case with keyboard, my Ipad has fallen many many time from the car's trunk directly on the cement and the case is pretty banged up, but the IPAD is fine. Also, it's well worth getting the Apple Care, since I think they will replace the Ipad free of charge once or twice in a 3 year term... Well worth the 100$...

I already have one on the way but the wife ok'd me replacing it so I have to decide what I am going to replace it with. as for the ZAGG case, they look good, the targus case i was using has done a pretty good job protecting it, I think i just dropped it one too many times.

I bought an iPad Air after my original iPad died a horrible death (met the business end of my 1 year old's wrath). It's faster, smaller and lighter. Other than that, it's an iPad.

Brian - I have both an Air and the new Mini. If you plan on yoke mounting it, the Mini works much better. The screen on the Mini is as good as the Air, just smaller.

Like the Marauder I also have the ain't and mini w/ retina display..the mini is on the yoke and I keep the air on my knee with a simple strap, the mini is hooked to stratus horizon. It seems like the best of both .My eyes of old so I like using the air for approach plate and finding that fix I have no clue where it is..papa Sierra direct poopy intersection then direct..nowhere the hell's poopy at well the air finds poopy just nicely and I go for it. Good luck, both are great platforms.

Brian, it may be worth your while to take it into an apple store and ask them.

I had heard that there is an unwritten kind of thing apple has where they will replace the screen once as a courtesy, at least for iPhones.

I can confirm that indeed this may be true based on personal experience. One of our twins dropped his out of his pocket while riding his bike onto the asphalt glass face down! Took it to the apple store and they replaced it at nc.

Mini Retina is the way to go. I've not flown with it much yet, but would like to find somewhere to mount it other then the yoke [i actually use the still-working clock to switch tanks, as well as flight time and for noting actual IMC]. I've seen photos with it mounted to the left that look good, and some center post mounts that may also work. As they said where I used to work, "More thinking need!"

I like to have my mini to the left but I couldn't find any mount for it. So I have fabricated one.

I got simple and cheapest knee holder for the mini from Sportys. One with the elastic straps in the corners for easy placing and removing the iPad from it. I have removed the Velcro strap from it.

I used it as a platform for my holder.

I used the GoPro camera holder that is actually a box cover iwhen you buy a new gopro camera. It is a big black plastic square that camera sits on in the box.

I have attached the gopro black plastic to the knee holder platform with 4 flat head screws.

I used the gopro suction holder to attach the gopro black plastic piece now with the knee holder platform. ( The gopro arm between the suction holder and black plastic piece has to be modified a little to fit them to each other).

I attached everything to the corner of the pilots window. It positions the iPad mini in the perfect spot for me. It is almost in the eye level, not to close to read it and it is not in the way to see all the instruments. It doesn't block the outside view neither.

I will post some pics later today when I come back from the airport.

We have a Mini and 2. The 2 is better for reading approach plates the but the Mini is better for everything else. It fits in a J cockpit very well in landscape mode.

I actually shot a VOR approach to mins with a missed using an iPhone. I don't recommend it.

A friend of mine left his iPad on the wing while climbing in and didn't realize it until we pulled away. When we returned a few minutes later the screen was cracked but the unit still worked. He took it a new chain of stores called UBREAKIFIX where they replaced it on the spot for $75.00

Tough call. I went from the iPad 1 to the Mini this year. I like the smaller form factor for nearly everything I use my iPad for. However, I use my iPad on a knee board in the cockpit, so once it is there, the bigger screen was better. I'm OK with my choice, because I really do like the smaller size for transport and use outside of the cockpit, but as a knee board bigger was better. If you plan to use it on the panel, or yoke, I would definitely go with the Mini.

I bought my daughter an Ipad 3 wifi at the same time I bought my Ipad 3 with wifi and cellular, since both now have cracked screens I think I have decided to fix both screens and let her have mine. then I'll buy a Mini with cellular to replace mine and use her Ipad 3 as a secondary. every thing I have heard indicates they both have there advantages and I like the idea of yoke mounting the mini more then the full size Ipad. with my full size Ipad mounted I do not have a lot of room by the yoke grips and the mini will correct that.

I use my mini iPad for approach plates and prefer to be able to use it exactly where I previously placed my paper plates - on the yoke. For IFR work I think it's vital we don't try to look down at our lap because of the ease of inducing vertigo. For VFR use, I don't think it much matters where you mount it - except for one thing. I would encourage all pilots to seriously consider the crash worthiness of their iPad mounting system and avoid creating likelihood of a projectile to their head or a passengers as well as minimize likelihood of punctures to their chest. It would be a shame to otherwise survive a multi-G off airport landing to only succumb to death by iPad or even be blinded by one

Mini on the yoke works best for me. Good for approach plates and everything else. Just for the heck I did try mounting it with a suction cup various places on windscreen and side windows. No matter where I placed it, it always seemed to obstruct the view even if just a bit (unacceptable for me). In the end the yoke worked well for me.

I have a mini retina and wouldn't want to miss it. I have enroute charts, approach plates, etc. on it. I flew a few times with my large ipad - IMO to big and cumbersome, The mini retina is perfect for me!
