Hi All,

This is somethng I've wanted to know about for a long time.  Really good GA airports to stay ovenight or even a few days if the weather turns bad. It would be great to know a buch of ideal stopover spots all over the country with a nice hotel and food right there. Anyone got favorites? I tried googling for this and got results aimed at passengers on airlines and not GA pilots.

4I7 (Greencastle, IN) Small hotel and restaurant on the field.  You also get an opportunity to purchase the world's fastest lawnmower.

2 hotels I enjoyed in California are the Crown Plaza(nice restaurant inside) right on the Concord airport field with close proximity to San Francisco and the Pacific Plaza Resort which is right on the beach in Oceano(L52).  Oceano has 2 or 3 good eating spots with in walking distance and they give you a discount if you mention you're a pilot flying in.

KPCW, Port Clinton, Ohio.

Soon to be Erie Ottawa International Airport with the opening of a customs office on the field. First international flight will be next week with an Airport Authority and county commissioner delegation flying to Canadian Pelee Island about twenty miles north and back. KPWC will become an official port of entry.

There is a diner (very good food) and museum on the field and a couple motels withing walking distance of the airport.

Sounds like a new website is in the making.  Instead of the "$100 Hamburger", we need the "$100 Overnighter".   :-)

N14... Lumberton, NJ has Flying W resort on field. Has motel, pool, and restaurant on field. Ate there years ago, but live to close to advise on anything else. I agree, could be great new web site... I fly for food, would be nice to stay the night.

Most convenient overnight I've had recently was in St. Petersburg, FL.  KSPG.  http://www.airnav.com/airport/KSPG

There is a great Hilton Hotel virtually right across the street from the FBO.

Since the airport is right downtown, you won't need a car.  You can see your parked plane from the concierge lounge!

The FBO charged me less to park my airplane than the hotel would have charged to park a car!

Most airports with airline service have hotels near the airport (either walking distance or the FBO will give you a ride).

Here's a few airports I've been to:

  • KLAL (Lakeland, FL) - Hilton Garden Inn (walking distance)
  • KHPN (White Plains, NY) - Hilton (they'll give you a ride)
  • KCLT (Charlotte, NC) - multiple hotels (including a Hilton), Wilson Air can give you a ride 24 hours a day
  • KTYS (Knoxville, TN) - Hilton (walking distance or they'll give you a ride)
  • KBTR (Baton Rouge, LA) - Hilton Garden Inn (walking distance)
  • KHOU (Houston, TX - Hobby Airport) - multiple hotels (including a Hampton Inn and La Quinta), Wilson Air can give you a ride 24 hours a day
  • T82 (Fredericksburg, TX) - the "Hangar Hotel" - http://www.hangarhotel.com/ (walking distance)
  • KMAF (Midland, TX) - there's an airport hotel (I think it was a Best Western, now it's a Baymont Inn and Suites), but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are stuck
  • KDMN (Deming, NM) - Holiday Inn (they'll give you a ride)
  • KHII (Lake Havasu City, AZ) - Hampton Inn (they'll give you a ride)
  • KSQL (San Carlos, CA) - Fairfield Inn & Suites (walking distance)
  • KHWD (Hayward, CA) - La Quinta (walking distance)
  • CYTZ (Toronto, ON) - the airport is downtown with a free ferry to Bathurst St and there are plenty of hotels within walking distance or the subway

Hope this helps.

Fredericksburg Texas T82 http://www.fredericksburgfbo.com/ is a lovely place to stay. Has a "Hanger Hotel" that is adorned with 40's decore. Lots of ramp space and food is not far away if the airport diner is closed. We had a Swift fly-in there a couple years ago and the FBO had made big promises about cheap gas prices which he did not honor after we all arrived...so we all fueled elsewhere during our sightseeing flights.

KTYS actually has multiple hotels easy walking distance from TacAir.  The Courtyard is directly across the street.  Most offer some sort of "Deal".

+1 on T82, Fredricksburg TX. Also note that you can get much cheaper self serve avgas at the north end of the field away from the FBO. Cool hotel on field and neat little town as well if you guys remember from the Mooney Fly-in not too long ago. Ray

Oshkosh, WI (KOSH) has a Hilton Garden Inn that you can literally taxi right up to. One of the FBOs will deliver fuel to the hotel ramp. Bar and restaurant in the Hotel, and a couple more places within a short walk. The EAA museum is also on the field, which could occupy two days if you take your time.

North Myrtle Beach. The FBO vallet brings the rental car right to the plane on the transient ramp. Within 20 minutes of: The Diamond Club, Derriere's, Cheetah 3, Crazy Horse, Secrets, The Afterdeck and Almost Perfect. Oh and 150 awesome golf courses.

If you fly the Smoky Mountains leaf-peeking, Knoxille has an airport very close to downtown, right on an island in the river. ( http://www.airnav.com/airport/KDKX). TYS approach control is very accomodating. Your approach will take you right over the city.

The FBO is very friendly (as is most everyone in Knoxville). The downtown Holiday Inn will pick up/drop off for free if you are a guest. Once at the hotel, everything is walking distance.

Don't even try to get a reservation on a football weekend!
