  1. Has anyone seen piston ring blow-by cause oil temps to climb to the redline during a shallow climb in OATs around 65 degrees? My D model has a freshly field O/H'd engine...not sure about the quality of the O/H. I've checked the vernatherm (seems to work correctly), the oil cooler was flushed, oil pressure is good, temp gauge seems to work correctly. I'm getting considerable amount of black exhaust on the right gear door and oil spray from the breather tube on the left gear door after each flight. I'm also noticing a vibration that seems to be increasing. I'm considering pulling all four cylinders and having a different mechanic O/H or replace them as necessary. Does anyone have thoughts before I put so much more money and effort into the engine? Oh yeah, the compressions are 79 on the 2 steel cylinders and 73 on the 2 channel chromed cylinders and my current mechanic says they probably got glazed from too much ground running (over an hour before the first flight)
  2. I have a 2000 Mooney ovation with the 310 HP upgrade and the ship oil temperature is starting to act up. Started a couple of days ago the Moritz ship gauge went though the red line but the JPI showed a normal temperature of 180 or so. Aborted the trip, talked with mechanic and he said most likely the sensor. There was no indication of overheat on CHT or oil pressure fluctuating, oil didn't smell burned or anything excessively hot. Went to fly down to him today and after airplane sat all nite, with cooling temps in low 50's I pulled plane out and gauge showed about 95, JPI about 60. Gauge never went over red line today but it did show about 40 degrees hotter than ship gauge. I have noticed on previous trips the gauge would read cool and then the next trip would show much hotter, never really correlated it to anything. General thoughts? I am guessing it is just the sensor. Any idea what one costs?
  3. I just put an overhauled engine in N201TK. I have been running at high power for the first few hours to break the cylinders in. At 4500, 25 squared, 100 ROP I have had a very hard time keeping the oil temps in the green. Two flights ago I had to open the cowl flaps keep it in the green. Pressure and CHT are normal albeit a little high since the engine is running hard. We fixed up the baffling and adjusted the cowl flaps to trail 1/4 inch in cruise, after which the temps stayed green but at the high end (like 215-225). New cooler, new vernatherm, fresh overhauled engine. Is there anything obvious to check that would help bring the temps down? This isn't going to work in South Texas in the summer when it's 110 on the ground. Also, my cowl flaps only have the open or close position. Open at cruise makes everything in the plane shake. I can trail them by holding the handle open an inch but it is hard as heck. This is a 1977 201 (24-0048) so an early model. Is it possible to trail them manually? Mark Jackson
