  1. Recently did a panel upgrade on my M20J. Thanks to this forum, ended up going with a GTX345 for ADS-B and a GTN650 for WAAS. I've been using Foreflight for years with a Stratus with no issue. However, with the new panel I am having a annoying GPS position issue when I connect to my new Garmin GTX-345+GTN650 using Bluetooth. The GPS position that I see on my Foreflight map is very 'jumpy' and seems to lag my position. As I'm flying, my position seems stuck for a few seconds - then will very quickly move/jump to a new location, or then jump back. Often it's moving/jumping over 1cm on the map at a time, which can be over a 1 nm! (I'm using a Wifi-only iPad Air) This is a new phenomenon. For years I have been using my Stratus 2S via Wifi to the same iPad without any issue. As a test, I went back to my Stratus and it worked fine and I never saw any issue with position. I'm not sure if new issue is with Bluetooth or something specific to our Mooney's Garmin 345+GTN650 setup. It's happened on multiple flights weeks apart. We just did a $20k upgrade on this panel - but I can't seem to get a reliable, smooth, position using this new setup with Foreflight. The position seems fine on the GTN650 screen though - so I don't think it's a GPS issue. I fly in very crowded SFO airspace and this is very disconcerting. Anyone else report a similar issue with GTX345+GTN650 and Foreflight? Any ideas on mitigation? It's not very confidence inspiring.
  2. Well, the time has come to sell my most recent project. This 231 has everything anyone could ever desire in a 231. I run a FAA repair station and we are a Mooney service center. All work was completed by us. I will most certainly forget something but here it goes. Airframe: 3400TTSN NDH Brand new grey leather interior, all new solar grey UV glass, 2008 paint (8/10), fresh annual (all brakes, disks, shock disks, tires, tubes, gear stripped and repainted, etc.) factory O2, new masks, speed brakes, etc... Engine: TSIO-360-LB, about 25 hours TSMOH New turbo, new exhaust system, O/H'ed fuel system, new GAMI's, new Meryln waste gate, new intercooler, new mags, new harness, new baffles seals, new mounts, new hoses, sitting on a freshly powder coated mount. If it's not listed here, it's probably new.... Avionics: Aspen 1000 Pro PFD w/ EA100 autopilot adapter and APS4A altitude preselect coupled to the KFC200, driven by a Garmin GTN750 and a GTN650, remote Garmin GTX33ES transponder and remote Garmin GMA35 audio panel, both controlled on the touchscreens. Weather and traffic from the Garmin GDL88, as well as a freshly overhauled Weatherscout Radar just for kicks. Bluetooth comes from a Garmin Flightstream 210 to run all your portable devices. JPI EDM700 engine monitor with fuel flow is hooked to both GTN's giving fuel range rings. This plane flies as good as it sounds and is dripping with technology. There is a listing on TAP here with photos: http://www.trade-a-plane.com/search?category_level1=Single+Engine+Piston&make=MOONEY&model=M20K+231+MODIFIED&listing_id=2168971&s-type=aircraft Also there is a thread on here detailing some of the project as it progressed: Anyone interested can contact me directly on here, or jclemens@daytonaaircraft.com, or call 386-255-2049 M-F 9-5 and ask for Jake. You can also contact my broker listed in the TAP listing.
  3. New GTN650, which includes the installation tray, factory wire harness, but no antenna. Unfortunately, due to a family issue, I won't be installing this unit at this time. Everything is new in the box. The USA base maps and initial update certificate are included. Message me if interested. I have ~$9000 invested.
  4. Good morning, I've spent quite a few AMUs this morning window shopping and thought I could bring you guys into it. There have been a few reviews on the IFD440/550 lately and folks seem to like them. People also like the 650 it seems. What do you guys think the return on investment would be in upgrading a 430w to 650 or ifd 440 in utility, resale, etc.? As a wrench in this discussion I have a JPI 700 and it can be upgraded through Spruce for around 1.2AMUs. I'm thinking that bang for the buck might be to do the JPI/650 upgrade if you were going to spend the $ on the IFD. How much do the Avidyne subscriptions cost in comparison to Garmin too?
  5. Grrr...experiencing obnoxious squelch breaks on my newly installed GTN650, along with a new belly com antenna. Work was done by an experienced Garmin dealer that I'm fairly sure does not suck. Didn't happen at all for the test flight when picking up. Then it happened the first couple of flights, but just on the ground. This weekend it happened continuously for 30 minutes, driving me bonkers and making me switch to the serviceable SL30 I had put in at the same time (which works perfect). Ideally, the new >10k radio would work better than the 3k nav/com that I just use to listen to ATIS. I'm trying to look into the factory setup settings myself using the handy internet- the manual is no help. But I hate to give up a bunch of range on the radio to solve this problem. I know this has been a fairly common problem, but I would have figured that the bugs would be out by now given the units have been around for a while. Before I bug the dealer and or Garmin, would folks please share how they ultimately got their GTN650 squelch issues resolved? Hoping this will be easy, and I won't end up regretting I didn't go with Avidyne.
  6. I've spent months considering how to upgrade my technology-deficient panel to get the best situational awareness bang for my buck, as well as get ADS-b compliance over with. I'd settled on: (1) a Garmin GTN650 (2) trading in my geriatric Bendix KT76A transponder for the inexpensive, plug and play KT74 for ADS-b out (3) using the Stratus 2 with ForeFlight for traffic and weather. It makes sense for me to stay with ForeFlight, as this is what I've gotten somewhat adept at using as a newbie pilot. I could instead get a Garmin GDL88 to put traffic and weather on the GTN650, but the added expense for this info on the small screen doesn't seem worth it, and I don't really have the panel space or budget for a large MFD in my '68C. So I figure let the ipad do some of the work. BUT then I see this: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/in-the-air/avionics-safety/sat-comm/flight-stream-110-210/prod153681.html For 0.5-1amu, you can transfer nav data from your ipad to the GTN650. Sounds awesome, particularly as I hope to start instrument training soon. I'm guessing this kind of ipad integration is the future. But the catch right now is that you have to use Garmin Pilot instead of ForeFlight. Ok, so maybe I'll suck it up and learn to use the other app and also get a Garmin GDL39 instead of the Stratus for ADS-b in. The problem is, Garmin Pilot is not nearly as loved as Foreflight, with the strong negative opinions encapsulated here: http://flythewing.com/308/Blog/Entries/2015/1/12_Garmin_Must_Buy_ForeFlight.html How are others with finite budgets and scant panel space working through these issues? Will there be ForeFlight-Garmin integration soon, and I should do my original install plan? Should I switch to Garmin Pilot? Should I wait a bit longer to let the Foreflight vs Garmin market shake out? My parents went with Sony BetaMax in the late 70's, and I don't want to repeat their mistakes...
  7. I have a 1965 M20C equipped with a Brittain autopilot with heading, cap, track, and loc selection knob. At this time the auto-leveler does not work but I plan to fix it. I am upgrading my aircraft with a GTN650, GMA350, and a course indicator GI106A. The GI106A comes with a VOR/ILS or VOR/ILS with course datum for an extra $500. Does anyone known if a Brittain autopilot can interact with a GTN650 and a course datum to intercept a course?
