I have a 1967 M20 E with 2170 hours on a smooth running engine with good compression on all cylinders. 988 hrs since top overhaul in 1982. In 1973 the engine received new main bearings @ 529 hours to comply with Lyc SB 3200. The engine oil pressure on the gauge after warm up shows 55 psi at 900 rpm ( lowest it will run with throttle back to the stop) 65 psi at 1200 rpm and 70 psi at 1700 rpm. I normal idle at 1200 rpm. I purchased the plane 2 1/2 yrs ago and have only flown 25 hours. What could be done to access the health of this engine? I know I could do a soap sample and have it bore scoped. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I realized I may be looking at an overhaul but not sure since in runs good. Thank you

Looking for the collective wisdom here. I'm also seeking input from other sources as well. Here is our situation. For years, we have been merrily flying along with our IO-360-A3B6D and consuming a quart of oil about every 5 hours. As is typical, it would spit out everything over 6 quarts in short order so we only fill it to 6 quarts. We use Camguard and change the oil about every 30-35 hours. Then in July, one of our partners took a long trip and either just before he left, or while on his trip a couple things happened. 1. Fixed already, but the next person to fly the airplane after the trip noted that the right magneto was inop. Our mechanic found the points pitted and had heated up so much that it melted the riser block so that they could no longer open. We had the condenser/capacitor and points replaced and all is well. 2. The current problem. The airplane was starting to blow out everything over 4.5 quarts instead of 6 quarts. We knew that engines seem to go through oil more quickly as the oil ages and it was time for an oil change so we changed the oil to see if that would fix the problem. No metal noted in the Tempest oil filter. It appeared to improve at first, but it seems to be going through oil more along the lines of a quart every 3 hours or less. Today we got our oil analysis back from the oil change and saw a couple items that may or may not be related. Three metals showed significant changes. Looking at the last three analysis results: Iron: 32.9 to 28.4 to 38.8 with a AvLab stated average value of about 25.0 for other users. Still acceptable levels according to them. Chromium: 3.4 to 3.6 to 9.6 with a stated average of 3.1. This value is enclosed in a red box indicating a problem. Lead: 2392 to 1992 to 3116 with a stated average of 3093. Close to average but a negative trend. Still an acceptable value. I think we may have a problem and I think I have an idea what it is, but what say you? Thanks, Bob
