  6. As a newbie Mooney owner, I'm a bit anxious about all kinds of things. And at the risk of being told to go study the POH, I'm gonna ask the question anyway. My oil pressure gauge indicates in the yellow/high yellow on take off. As soon as I dial the power back to 25/25 it settles back into the green. I'm showing 6 qt's on the stick and it's nice and clean. The engine runs really smooth and seems to make plenty of power. I'm in Texas and so the temps are pretty mild. Should I be concerned? Or is this normal for an O360? Thanks, Paul
  7. So we’re into this year’s annual, and I have a cylinder (4) with a leaking at the exhaust valve 60/80 and it’s opposing partner (3) leaking at the intake valve 72/80. From my logs, these same two problem children were replaced in 2001 and 2000 respectively, so it seems they haven’t done too bad to make it nearly 13 years and 750hrs. (although 1 and 2 are mid 70s and haven’t been touched since shortly after last major in ’89). My IA and I are discussing the options, but basically at 1500hrs and 25yrs, I’m weighing my decision pretty heavily. Oil consumption Is pretty low – 1qt every 6-7 hours. That being said, topping the engine is a thought I’m having, but I’m curious to know if anyone can offer any insight with regard to the “Overhauled” cylinders I’m finding around the internet for around $350-$800each vs the “New” cylinders at $2300 each. The OH’ed cylinders come with 8130, so I don’t think we’re talking about buying some grey market garbage. My thought process would lead me to believe that if I had any thoughts of getting the latter cylinders, I would likely end up better getting one jug for now and a factory overhauled engine in the not so distant future. This is new territory to me, so I thought I’d solicit input accordingly . Any thoughts , constructive input, or things otherwise to be aware of? Thanks! ~Abe
  8. I'm the proud new owner of N6XM, a '64 M20C. I picked her up at Don Maxwell's where he did the pre-buy, then annual and a few other misc items. Don said it's the fastest M20C he's ever flown. But then he might say that to all the kids :-) This is my first Mooney and first airplane. So I might be just a little excited and overwhelmed. I spent a couple of days flying it around the Dallas area with my CFI getting the required 5 hours dual before flying it home to Smithville and my hanger at 84R. I still need another couple of hours before I can carry passengers, but I've certainly been having fun with it. My brother is a CFI, Southwest Captain and also checked out in the Mooney. We spent a couple of hours Saturday trading circuits in the pattern here at 84R. I hope to see everyone at the home coming in a couple of weeks. Here are some pictures... Cheers, Paul
  9. Well it's finally complete and I officially own N6XM. It's my first Mooney and first airplane. It will be with Don Maxwell for another week or so getting a fresh annual and several squawks addressed. I'll be even more excited when I can take a picture of it sitting in my hanger here at 84R.
  10. Dear Friends: On Tuesday, I flew my 1966 M20C Mark 21 from Fort Leonard Wood, MO to Louisville, KY (actually Jeffersonville, IN because I couldn't get into Louisville VFR despite extraordinary assistance from the Louisville Approach controller, but that's another story...). Anyway, I used both radios (King KX 170B and KX 175B TSO) on the way out and most of the way back, but after the final handoff for continued flight following to my home airport, I couldn't contact Center on either radio, but I continued to receive just fine on both radios. Perhaps unrelated, after sunset, I turned on the twin cabin ceiling red lens spotlights which illuminate the instrument panel, and when I rotated the on/off rheostat knob to the full stop brightest setting, both spotlights flashed off simultaneously. Subsequently, the single white light cabin ceiling light failed to illuminate when I tried turning it on. It worked fine the last time I used it a few weeks ago. None of the circuit breakers popped. The filament in the single, panel-mounted fuse appears fine. I found three (there may be more) wire-in-line fuses under the instrument panel. Each appears to have a spare fuse taped to a wire adjacent to the fuse in use that it is apparently intended to replace. I need to return my daughter to Jeffersonville, IN (her car is parked there because of my diversion from Louisville to Jeffersonville) on Tuesday, and really would like to have a least one operational radio for such a long VFR flight. The cabin lights are less critical and time sensitive. What's the most likely reason for both radios to stop transmitting simultaneously, yet continue receiving just fine? Are the cabin ceiling spotlights and the cabin ceiling dome light on a shared electrical circuit with a fuse located under the instrument panel? Thank you, Bobby (573) 337-3447 Sent from my iPad
  11. First Post Mooneyspace! Here's the deal. I want to buy a plane, specifically a C. Problem is I don't have a pilot's license (yet). First off I'd like to recognize the obviousness of this being crazy. That is probably part of the appeal, as I tend to live pretty conservatively otherwise. I understand that renting a plane is quite a bit more economical and low risk for a starting pilot, but I loves machines. I love the idea of working on the plane -- figuring out what it needs in terms of preventative maintenance, helping a mechanic with annuals -- in general building a relationship with the machine that's going to keep me in the air. If I have the plane ferried to a local airstrip, will I be able to find a CFI who will be willing to give me flight lessons in the plane? Right now I'm spending my weekends (more or less) poring over flight training documents, learning up on engine mechanics and avionics systems, looking through listings for partnerships and whole planes. All this in itself is more or less it's own reward, but what drives me up the wall is the idea that I could actually do it. I have a little less than $2000/mo. to play with, good credit, and am looking for an IFR equipped C around or under 50k. I figure I need maybe $12k cash saved up to cover down payment, pre-buy, ferrying, and other incidentals around the purchase without going broke. Have I lost my marbles? I would love to hear (or be pointed to) the stories of anyone who has done something like this. EDIT: With all your valuable feedback and information about some of your experiences, I think I've made my decision, which is NOT to attempt to do this. I am still considering the idea of buying a less formidable aircraft in which to learn, though not because I think it will be a cheaper of faster way to get my license. Still excited!
  12. Hi gang. Looking for a fuel cap for my '65 M20C. The one I have now is almost impossible to get the tab down. Maybe it can be fixed but not sure how?
  13. Does the Mooney M20C Mark 21 have an "exhaust piper"? How about a fuel gascolator drain in the engine access compartment? Finally, is there a pitot-static system drain as there is in the Piper Warrior series? Thanks in advance for any responses. My memory of the type is rustier than I'd like.
  14. Hi, I've been lurking on the forums for about 3 months, and I figured it was time to introduce myself and my new bird: She's a 1965 M20C with plenty of mods: 201 windshield 201 instrument panel Smooth belly mod Flap gap seals Aileron gap seals McCauley no AD propeller The previous owner thought it also had the cowl enclosure fairing mod, but from looking at pictures, I don't think it does. (Maybe one of you could kindly confirm or deny from the pictures? She runs hot during climb-out and I believe the enclosure would help?) As far as the work I've had done: Installed Nu-Lights everywhere but on the Mooney six-pack (picture attached) Installed a dash mount clock (working on my IFR ticket) Installed an STC Altimeter and VSI (part of the pitot-static check) Installed a Zeftronics solid state voltage regulator Prop resealed (red oil on the cowl after a long cross country, this wasn't cheap) Right fuel tank resealed (some blue stain on the underside of the wing) I also bought a Garmin GPS 155 TSO IFR capable GPS. I haven't decided if I should sell it or pay approximately $1,700 the avionics shop quoted me for install and FAA Form 337. Thoughts on this? The alternative would be save for a year or two and buy a GNS 650 to replace that old KX170b. Thanks everyone! *edited for a proper orientation on the lit-instrument picture*
  15. Would you like to become an owner of a wonderful 1970 Mooney M20C? The price has been reduced to $27,900. Please see more details at the following link and feel free to contact Bob Gawler at 301-330-6753 or treborav8@gmail.com or PM me. http://www.treborav8.com/Treborav8/My_Sales_Albums/Pages/1970_Mooney_Ranger_M20C.html Additional Photos in my Gallery: http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/album/13710-/
  16. Hello All, I am thinking of buying a M20C/E/F but I would like to see/sit in one just to see if it would be a good fit for me. Would anyone in the area be available to have me look at your airplane? I am located at KSAC but would be willing to fly somewhere that's reasonably close to come take a look. Thanks!
  17. I need a plot with 500 hours total, 100 hours retractable, and 25 hours (make and model - M20) time to ferry my M20C from Midwest Executive at Lee's Summit (KLXT) to TechnicAir at Kansas City Downtown (KMKC). For insurance purposes, I also need a CFI with the same minimum experience to provide 5 hours of flight instruction to me in the same aircraft. Can anyone help? Thank you, Bobby rakes_bobby@hotmail.com (573) 337-3447
  18. Yesterday was a perfect day for flying! So I went out there and flew down to the beach. Some nice shots of my Panel in action and some volcanos (including one smoking...) Enjoy.... Oscar
  19. Whit the inspection plate removed from the wing this is a side view of the electrical device. It is about 5/8 inch high. There is 4 small feet that are about 1/16 inch tall on the same side that the three screws that secures the device to the inspection plate. Note the two electrical wires that are soldered on and the third terminal is not connected. The device is about 1 inch long, 1/2 inch wide, and 5/8 inch tall. No visable stock numbers.
  20. This is an end view of the electrical device
  21. What is it? Located in the under side of the starboard wing on the inspection panel nearest the landing gear door. Hole is about 3/4 inch long and 1/8 inch wide.
