  1. I have for many, many years ranted that the most misused word in America is the word free. When I was younger I was quick to jump on salespeople who would say '...and you get a free ______ with that.' So whatever it is you were getting wasn't quite free because it came with a condition. Now I am reading up on the STRATUS 2S and the following from the description at Sporty's raised my 'free' alarm: Get subscription-free weather, GPS information, ADS-B traffic and backup attitude – all integrated with ForeFlight Mobile. Frankly, I think once 2020 rolls around flying (without fees) will be the next thing to go in the US.
  2. I did my first long XC trip this weekend after installing the GDL88 and Flightstream 210 (naturally Garmin introduced a new solution just as my install was being completed, but that's another topic). I'm liking what I'm seeing. Weather is quite usable, nicely integrated with Foreflight both graphically and in the lookups for the airports. TIS-B traffic is fascinating, though, of course, incomplete. I found it useful on a couple occasions to track traffic I was given by Center. Bidirectional communication from the GNS-430W to the iPad for flight plans is marvelous. On the FIS-B side,I had to keep an eye on a line of showers associated with a stationary front today, and found the radar information more than adequate for strategic planning. There's certainly more information available than there was with the basic XM Weather subscription. One question I have I how long it takes an aircraft to register on TIS-B after it takes off. I can envision passing an airport with departing traffic and potentially not seeing it on TIS-B due to system lag. Does anyone know how long it takes for an aircraft to show up once it lifts off?
  3. I made a Pirep today. Haven't done that for a long time. For that matter, haven't talked to FSS radio when aloft for a long time. I was induced to do so because the ADS-B weather (well, FIS-B, I guess) displayed by Foreflight is so handy, and displays pireps conveniently and easily, I was inspired to try to be helpful. . Foreflight also makes it easy to look up a freq for FSS (now that Flight Watch is dead). It was pretty cool to watch Foreflight after I filed the pirep and see it eventually appear on my iPad. It appeared within 14 minutes. I wonder if that's representative of the lag time for one to reach the cockpit after its filed. Anyone else have any experience with that issue?
  4. About time... Aspen unlocks Garmin ADS-B information Aspen Avionics has unveiled unlock software that makes Garmin's new line of ADS-B receivers compatible with the Evolution-series PFD and MFD retrofit display systems.
  5. I'm new to this site. It looks like the best place to get owner input. I'm looking to buy a TKS equipped ovation or acclaim. I have just figured out that there is an upgrade path issue with regard to ads-b for the G-1000 aircraft. I have looked at all the threads that I could find related to the topic and am wondering if there is any recent news that anyone could pass on to me. I am reluctant to step into something uncertain with 2020 looming.
  6. Hi all! Haven't been on much in a while (having twins will do that to you - and I don't mean the flying type...) I am considering upgrading my '96 Ovation from its existing King transponder - which ATC complains about all the time, and trading it in for an L3 NGT-9000 ADSB in/out transponder. This seems like a tidy unit, and it can tie into the 530 to display traffic along with my existing Skywatch installation, and solve for the 2020 mandate, and give me a weather display in the cockpit, pipe weather to my ipad via wifi, etc etc. First off, anyone done it, or considering it? Would love to hear your thoughts. I'd like to take advantage of their current special. Second, anyone who would talk me out of it - for other than the cost? I searched the forums, and it doesn't seemed to have been discussed much - and it looks like a slick solution to me! thanks, Greg

  8. Dropped off my plane Monday morning at 8:00 in Columbus (CSG) at Stark Avionics for a KT 74 install and caught a ride to PDK with another Mooney pilot who works with me. About 4:30 that afternoon I got a call saying the plane was ready to go! Picked it up this morning when they opened and paid the under 3.5 AMU bill. Everything works as expected and caught a great tailwind back to PLR. While they had the panel open, I had them drop a position source from the 430W for a new 406 ELT I am looking at installing during this month's annual. I cannot remember having such a painless upgrade done on any plane. Dropped it off when they asked, they did the work in the time they said it would take and the bill was about $20 less than they originally quoted. Even though they are about 90 miles from the home drome, getting work done correctly, quickly and as quoted is worth the 45 minute ride. Even got routed right over the top of ATL at 5,000 ft going to pick it up this morning. Great flying day! John
  9. I ordered a Vilmos ADS-B kit ($91 on Amazon, delivered) and got it running. I decided to drive over to KORG to check out the ground station, the only one in Southeast Texas. Anyway, they look a bit like a mini-cell tower (see photo) and are surrounded by a chain-link, barbed wire fence. The one at KORG has a small generator and an LPG tank, not much to it. Before I drove overI called the FBO and asked if he knew where the tower was. He just said that the FAA had a tower there and he thought it was an RCO. When I drove up it was unmistakeable and literally right off HWY 87. It's a low altitude station and I got great signal parked next to it
  10. Per this story in the WSJ, it looks like that some air carriers can delay their ADS-B implementation past 2020: http://on.wsj.com/1ZJ4tpN I wonder if they'll push it back for GA too?
  11. As some of you know, I have been working through the portable ADS-B options. In order to get full capability on the portable platforms, I would be spending quite a bit. So much in fact, that it makes the panel stuff look even better. Since I have an Aspen 2000 setup, my MFD is capable of displaying weather and traffic on it. At this point, I believe only the GDL-88 is available to interface with my Garmin GTN 650. Talking with a couple of avionics shops, it is not clear what, if anything will be displayed on the Aspen. According to these shops, the Garmin GDL-88 will only display on the GTN, not the Aspen MFD. For those of you that have this configuration, is this true? If this is not true, could you fill me in on a few details? > Ballpark cost of installed product? I got numbers from the two shops I spoke with, but want confirmation of real world numbers. > These shop also said that two antennae configurations were available. Something about shading occuring and faster upload speeds with two. If you had the GDL-88 installed, can you confirm any of this? > How does the GDL-88 function with respect to the MFD's capabilities of presenting textual weather information? (I know that radar uploads and traffic should be displayed, but in the MFD manual, it shows the capabilitiy of panning to an airport and getting the textual description -- does that work as advertised?) > Is there anything you find you like or dislike with the setup? Thanks, B26 aka Marauder
  12. The below posting was copied over from Beech Talk board. Post subject: ADS-B Big Brother Already Watching Posted: 23 Jun 2015, 17:10 Just received a courtesy call from the FAA from their head ADS-B investigator telling me I was out of compliance 100% Baro Alt since January 17th, me thinking this was a joke he could hear my laughter, then it got real quit as he gave his credentials again. Still thinking this was one of my friends trying to get me wound up over ADS-B. He was kind enough to send me an email with what needed to be fixed, could not believe he had every flight since install back in October last year. He actually pin pointed the exact flight where I fell out of compliance. I guess my registration for some reason has a phone number that's not mine, he went to the trouble to Web search me to find my cell number?? didn't know they could do that. So off to the avionics shop again, I bet they knocked a wire or pin loose when they installed my auto pilot in February. Email As per our conversation I have attached the latest failure report for your Aircraft. If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, William Adams FAA/Avionic ASI ADS B Compliance Team AFS-360 Avionics Branch(Detailed) (O) 202-267-8961
  13. Just got an email from Appareo about their all transponder: $3,490 is the announced price. The unit is not yet certified but they are on track to do so. -1090ES -Built in WAAS GPS -GPS Antenna I do not yet have ADS-B out nor have a Stratus II unit (though I am planning to do something at some point, as we all are). I do have a Garmin 430W. Most likely I'll go the route of a transponder that gets the signal from the 430W vs an independent signal. Also, I'll want traffic to show on the 430W. I'll probably also at some point get the Stratus II so that it will interact with the ipad and foreflight (traffic, weather, backup synthetic vision, etc). I have not yet priced out other transponders. This transponder would probably have been perfect for my older aircraft that did not have a WAAS GPS as that with a Stratus is a cost efficient solution for both being seen (ADS-B out - required) and seeing (ADS-B in - nice to have using a portable reciever). What are others doing, will this change your mind? Prices for the King KT-74? Prices the Garmin 330? Again, knew I'd have to but hadn't really started my research. I probably will not purchase this unit as I have a 430W, but I can see the many aircraft it would work very well in - like a C150 without a WAAS GPS or any other aircraft that has a transponder that can be upgraded and simply get ADS-B out. -Seth
  14. I have a couple of questions for anyone that has Skyradar and use it with WingX. I just got the Skyradar DX Dual band receiver with the AHRS. I am using it for backup weather, traffic and attitude indicator. I already have an MX-20 with a GNS 480 and I get traffic and XM weather on those instruments. I used the Skyradar for the first time today and it appeared to work very well for traffic, weather and with the AHRS. I compared it to my current, attitude, traffic and weather on the MX-20 and 480 and it was pretty much the same except for a few minor differences and that was my question. I noticed that the traffic was a little different between what I saw on WingX, what I saw on the Radenna Skyradar software and what I saw on my MX-20.. Not a lot of difference but there was some. Does anyone know what causes that? Is there a distinction as to how the programs pick up the dual ADS traffic bands and then display them in WingX and the Radenna Skyradar software? As I was flying and using the Skyradar with the WingX it showed an aircraft at my position and altitude that did not show up on my mx-20. I made a turn to check for traffic and noticed that the WingX traffic icon turned with me. That's when I figured out that WingX was showing my plane as the traffic in addition to the WingX icon showing my position. Has anyone had this happen to them? Why would WingX show my plane as traffic on the ADS-B traffic system? I have a GTX-330 transponder with mode S installed. In addition to supplying TIS traffic to my mx-20, 480 and 430, I read in my manual that it transmits a coded response at 1090 MHz, the same frequency that is picked up by the Skyradar receiver. Is it possible I am receiving ABS-B traffic of my plane sent back from the ground stations because of the signal sent out by the GTX 330? On another note, does anyone know what happens when you turn on the "Filter ADS-B Traffic" in the settings section of WingX? Does it filter out the traffic or filter out traffic at certain distances. Thanks.

  16. After getting my #2 Nav recentered today, was speaking to my avionics guy about ADS-B. He mentioned that L3 was coming out with a one box solution that would effectively replace the existing transponder and yet be ADS-B compliant even without having a WAAS certified GPS onboard. Sure enough, I found a teaser from L3 about its new "Lynx" system: https://www.l-3avionics.com/media/37006/lynx-flyer.pdf Anyone know anything more about this? This could be a much cheaper solution rather than an entire avionics panel upgrade.
  17. Hello all, I am selling my Stratus 1 with the suction cup mount. There is one currently listed on eBay with one bid for $400. I'll sell it for $350 plus shipping to someone here if they want it. I'll wait a few days before posting it on eBay. Send me a PM if interested. Thanks. Jeff
  18. Hey all, Sorry for the cross posting but just wanted to let folks know I posted my Stratus 1 for sale in the other Forum here. Check it out and let me know if you're interested. Thanks. Jeff

GDL-39 driving Garmin Pilot on Nexus 7 with traffic and weather. Post GDL-88 install
  20. 252BH is scheduled for TKS installation at Airnet in late January, and thought I'd take advantage of the downtime to do some avionics upgrades. With this large of a spend, I've thought pretty hard about what I should do and where I want to end up next year. I'm looking for comments/suggestions/feedback in the event I'm missing anything obvious. And while it sounds a little ridiculous to say this, given the list of equipment below, I'm looking to spend no more than I must. I use the plane every week to fly 500-1000 nm to client sites all over the east and midwest. Being able to get through, over, or around as much weather as possible is important. And ability to handle any type of airspace from rural Missouri to busy east coast is also key. I had my doubts about putting so much money into the plane, thought about going to a TKS Bravo, or Ovation 2 or 3. But when I think about the hassle of the transaction, etc... So here is the plan: 1. Add FIKI TKS 2. Replace the KMA-24 with remote audio panel GMA 35. 3. Add Garmin GTN 750 over top of the GNS 430. I thought hard about the 650 instead of the 750, but decided to go with the 750 for the WX, traffic, and chart displays. 4. Slide the GNS 430 down in place of the KX165 as 2nd GPS/NAV/COM. It's non-WAAS so I don't get crossfill with the 750. I dunno about that, but I consider it a non-necessity for now (unlike everything else on the list!). I'm really hoping both the 750 and 430 will fit in that space, over top of the KAP150. 5. Replace the KT-76A with a GTX 330ES - the 252 likes the flight levels so I'll need the squitter, and I don't want the remote -33ES in case the 750 takes the day off. With this in place, I'll be 100% ADS-B compliant. 6. Add a GTS 800 with traffic display on the 750. Maybe I'll add a GDL88 later, but until more folks are transmitting ADS-B out, the 330ES with GTS800 should provide a more complete traffic picture -- correct? 7. Add a GDL69a for Wx display on the 750. I'm replacing my yoke-mount Aera 796 as my weather solution and looking forward to XM radio in the plane (ok, the "a" is an indulgence) 8. Upgrade the JPI 700 to JPI 830 since I can barely see the 700. I wanted %HP and the constant display rather than a scan, and by the time I added all the necessary probes to a 730 I was in 830 territory price-wise. Be nice to get alerts on all the engine parameters including oil, also. I'm planning to add a G500 with a GAD43e interface to the KAP150, but it's already a big chunk of change so I'll let that wait. Airnet is going to prewire for it though, while everything is apart. Here are the doubts: a. Am I nuts, spending this much money on a 27 year-old aircraft? b. Am I losing any vital functionality or serious convenience by not WAASing the 430? c. Will the 330ES and GTS800 get me the best traffic picture I can get for the money, today? Am I giving up anything right now by not installing the GDL88? d. While it's down, anything else I should attend to? e. Boy the G500 would sure be nice... (TIM: don't go there)

  22. Mission Looking to assemble a portable backup system for my existing ADS-B with resources I currently have and other useful utilities if possible.. #1. Provide backup ADS-B & AHRS to IPAD & Windows based tablet Have IPAD 2 & #1 priority is to use with Xavion, still considering and looking for an electronic checklist and flight log App. Also have a Windows Based SkyPad Tablet running Voyager by Seattle Avionics Some place I have an Zaon XRX!!! But I can’t find it right now… Any input, experience Pro - Con would be appreciated.
  23. Well its been a long time coming... well it seems that way to me however I finally got to at least sit in the ol - new to me Rocket tonight with plans to fly it with the new panel tomorrow! I have read everything I can get my hands on and watched all the videos I could find, downloaded the training simulator etc. Any advice or words of wisdom from those who have similar panels would be greatly appreciated. The panel consists of a G500 with SVT, GTN 750 & GTN 650, GTX330EX, GDL88, GAD43E, PS8000 audio panel, Insight G3 engine monitor, KAP 150 and Alpha System AOA.(would especially like any words of wisdom on calibrating and flying with the AOA). Here are a few pics of the orig panel new panel, a couple of them with the power on the quality is beyond bad but it was all I could get with my phone and the light conditions, better pic to follow!. OK here is a shot of the panel as it is powered up with the 696.... Yea before anyone says something yes I like the yoke mounted tablets, have two on my Saratoga!! oops forgot you cant say Brand X on this site!
  24. Ok, reposting this thread since it got clobbered in the outage: My King transponder is dying, so I need to go with a solution that solves ADS-B out. 1) I will get either the Garmin/Avdyne or Trig option for a mode S/ADS-B out 1090mhz transponder... I'm leaning toward the trig TT31, given the reviews I've read and that it is a slide in replacement for my King. I already have a 530w. 2) At a later date I would (maybe) add certified ADS-B in, but in the mean time, I will use a portable solution. My question here is, I have a skywatch system already - any idea if the traffic from ADS-B can coexist with / augment the skywatch input in a reasonable way displayed on the 530? Thoughts? Maybe Trig will come out with an ADS-B in only solution cheaper than Garmin's GDL 88 (I dont need UAT out)? Thoughts? thanks, Greg
