  1. Anyone use these newer sealed batteries from Gill? I know the Gill/Concorde debate will go on forever. However, looks like Gill has picked up the pace. Their old school unsealed batteries were crap. My 8 year old Concorde should be a solid testament to Concorde, but their $360 price tag is $90 more than this Gill. -Matt
  2. Just a data point here. I installed a Gill 7035-28 sealed battery (12V) in my 201 back in July 2018. So almost 4-1/2 years now without any issues. I fly about ten hours per month. I'm planning to replace it at five years (unless I just finxed it here).
  3. I have a 1980 J model that needs a new battery. The rest of the electrical system is fine but the 6 year old battery will not hold a charge. The current model is a Concorde RG-35AXC but I have been unable to find one anywhere. Even speaking to Boeing Aveo, the manufacturer they can not find one in North America. Has anybody found a solution to this shortage? The lead times look like 9 months according to some vendors. Considering I am AOG right now I am looking for a fast replacement. Any ideas? By the way, I look for a Gill 7035-28 and they are all back ordered as well. Thanks! Todd
  4. It is a sealed battery, but it's a 24 volt battery. If you're looking for a 12 volt sealed Gill for your airplane it's a 7035-28.
  5. The Gill for yours is a G-35 or if you want sealed it's a 7035-28. The Mooney Standard parts section of Aircraft Spruce is your friend: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/stpages/mooneyM20standardreplacementparts.php?clickkey=5942
  6. A Gill AGM battery (7035) is a fine battery. I would avoid buying another wet cell battery. I must say that yours surviving for 8 years makes it a bit of an outlier. I used Gil wet cell batteries for may years. All were below acceptable capacity by year 5.
  7. Looks like Gill finally added the Mooney M20C to the PMA/STC list. I remember many many years ago when I noticed the G-35 battery didn't have the M20C on the STC/PMA list they had the M20B , M20D, M20E, M20F, M20G but no M20C. I called them up ask why, I don't remember their exact answer but they seem pretty determined not to change their STC/PMA paper work on their end. I always thought that was weird to leave of the M20C one the most produced Mooney models off the list. Good for them they Added the M20C model on the PMA/STC list for the 7035-28 model . Though could have done better in their model number scheme.
  8. Well I'm getting ready to get a new battery for mine. I've had the Gill 7035-28 in my plane for 4 years now. Yesterday's start the prop seemed slow.
  9. or the GILL SEALED BATTERY 7035-28. I've used both and both are good. Jury is still out on the new style Gill's but I'm still satisfied in the first year of Gill use.
  10. From a commercial maintenance perspective, I have dealt with hundreds of batteries of both brands over the past 25+ years. Both will have shorter lives if they aren't used much. They're both about equal in longevity and performance. Northern climates are better for longevity. You can get 6-9 years. Warm climates cut that in half. I had a sealed Gill 7035-28 go seven years, and it was replaced as a precaution, not because it couldn't pass a capacity test. In South Florida, RG24-11M or -15m Concorde batteries rarely last more than 3 years, even in planes that fly 400+ hours annually. I have three Gill sealed batteries in Cirrus that are over three years and going strong. Concorde has gotten ridiculously expensive. They've doubled in price in not too many years, although part of that is California overhead costs.
  11. Gill has been owned by CMI for a while... Their batteries have been getting a make over... I think somebody around here bought one of the new versions... I bought way to many of the old version... Buy it, save your 90 bucks and provide feed back... If the CMI ownership has done something positive... you will know at the end of two years, when you buy the Concorde... Other MSers pay the Concorde price, and pretty much expect to get 6+ years out of them... the Prof. just gave a review on a pair of Concordes that just came out of his Rocket... Six years is 3X the two year lifespan of many of the old Gill batteries... that’s a bit more than the 90 bucks being saved today... Go for it! Somebody has to go first... @tls pilot gave a good review, but not much detail with it... one other pilot said he had one, and was planning its replacement... Just not many people saying they have the new sealed battery and it’s great... https://mooneyspace.com/search/?q=GILL LT 7035&updated_after=any&sortby=relevancy&search_and_or=and PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
  12. if you need a new battery after testing Best thing to do is buy a new Gill Battery 7035-28 if 12 Volt or 7243-14 if 24 volt The new sealed Gill Batteries truly perform and last unlike the old non sealed ones
  13. Hey everybody, So my Saturday was pretty eventful and I'd love some help from this group helping me figure out what happened. I left BJC (Denver, CO) at about 9AM with the plane cranking and running fine - it had last run a week prior. I flew down to PUB (Pueblo, CO), about a 70 minute flight, the JPI always showed 14V, no electrical challenges, no engine roughness, appropriate CHTs all less than 360, and landed uneventfully. We went in to get snacks and came back out to leave about 20-30 minutes later. The plane wouldn't crank. I was using what I now to believe to be a wrong hot start procedure and I'm sure that contributed to my problems. I likely flooded the engine as I did see a good bit of gas dripping from the breather tube on the front left low section of the engine compartment. So the engine was probably both heat-soaked and flooded. After 3-4 times of trying to start it, the prop started turning really, really slowly. I would get engine coughs the first couple attempts but never a full start. At this point, it was seeming like the battery was dead because the starter wouldn't effectively turn the prop. I threw the battery on a 12v charger and let it go for 45 minutes. That got me another 1-3 attempts at starting. Same thing: a few coughs, by the third attempt the prop was barely turning. Another 45 minutes, same thing. Sometimes turning the ignition wouldn't even turn the prop at all. Finally I decided to go eat lunch and let the battery fully charge and the plane cool down. I gave it about 4 hours. At that time, the battery was showing full charge on the battery charger. And, the plane had plenty of time to cool down. The plane cranked fine and I flew home uneventfully. 14V on the JPI, no challenges, etc. I'm trying to figure out what happened. Here are some relevant points: -1966 M20E -Gill 7035-28 battery, less than 3 years old -InterAv 015-01237 alternator, about 15 years old -Skytech PN 149-12LS/M starter, about 17 years old -PlanePower R1224 voltage regulator, unknown age -Plane is brand new to me, and to altitude, previously spending its life near sea level (if that matters) My first move has been to order a new battery, the Concorde with extra cranking amps. I did that and will install it this week. I believe the Gill should last longer than this but the prior owner installed it without a logbook entry so I don't know exactly how old it is. I also don't know if it was serviced at all. This just seems like an obvious place to start but honestly I'm guessing. It seemed to me that if the Gill was in good shape I would have gotten more attempts at starting than I did - before the prop started moving so slowly. But I'm nervous about this happening again. The first thing I've done is read up on better hot start techniques! I'm going to work on perfecting those on my home field after every flight. What do you guys think? What should I have checked out by my A&P? What should I do differently next time? Anything is welcome! Here is a picture of the saddest Mooney in Pueblo on Saturday...you can almost see her tears. Thanks in advance!
  14. Based on your experience what's the best battery for an "F"? I have this installed GILL 7035-28 but the POH mentions a 35amps...the 28 has been working great so far however (3+ years, not well maintained I guess), it started hesitating when I crank the engine. Planning to replace it at my annual in a week. Thanks!
  15. Not that I disagree with Concorde, but the Gill 7035-28 is AGM as well, so your comment makes little sense.
  16. you are allowed to replace the battery your self, but it does require a log book entry which you can do. I just looked at the gill 7035-28 vs the Concord RG35AXC the numbers on the gill look good, but they do not have any history to back them up. I have used both batteries in the past and actually had a gill wet cell last me 7 yrs, but that was not the usual time frame for the gill, 2-3 was the norm. I can not rate the last Concord battery I installed in my plane due to the fact that I left an aux port turned on for a month and completely killed the battery. I did attempt to bring it back to life but was unsuccessful. I have to admit I was tempted to try the Gill but the price point difference was not there so I went with what I trust when I ordered my replacement. Brian
