  1. As removed from late model Cirrus G5 : 2 Garmin G1000 WAAS units, GIA63W 011-01105-20 These units will provide WAAS up-grade for early non-WAAS G1000 equipped Mooneys . $22,000 for the pair, plus $100 Worldwide shipping.
  2. The waas upgrade is not as difficult as some would have you believe. You do have to wait until some gia63w boxes come onto the market, but its a relatively simple swap that costs about $2500 if you already have a 345 transponder with adsb in and out. If you don't have this you have to install an additional antenna, but that is all thats required. I have personally done it on two planes. It wasn't hard, and it wasn't $50k
  3. I had a similar problem with my GIA63w 1 LRU. Host of problems. We cleaned all connections and re-racked. Just picked it up and have had no problems for 10 hours.
  4. The MFD on early G1000s are lacking the VNAV button, although with the WAAS upgrade and the correct software, VNAV can still be used - just no dedicated button. The -01 and the -20 GIA63W are the only units that will work in the Mooney G1000.
  5. When I was looking at available aircraft with WAAS and non-WAAS G1000 last year, I believe upgrading requires the GIA units in back for sure, but possibly also a different panel or panels up front to fully use the VNAV features in the exact same way as a G1000 with WAAS from the factory. I was told there was even a button lacking (either on the P/MFD panel or the GFC700 panel). I did not go down this path, so did not verify this nor research the exact model #s and how hard they would be to source. Would tend towards the piece of advice above re: getting a hold of someone who knows this stuff well and confirm exactly what you need, and whether the offered GIA63W's definitely fit your installation. A phone call to a friendly avionics expert might be the ticket... esp. since you will want a shop to install, configure, update, vet the install.
  6. Well stated with the wisdom and knowledge of experience. But i think the biggest challenge for Mooney stems from the not so distant past when we saw the same issue with the waas upgrades for the G1000’s. A handful of owners pressured and convinced Mooney, while they were still in production mode, to provide the retrofit engineering to upgrade earlier G1000’s to WAAS. But in the end very few owners took advantage of it when Mooney offered the kit and probably more were updated using salvage or used GIA63W’s obtained from sources other than Mooney without allowing Mooney to recoup on their engineering cost. You have to wonder if you were Mooney why you would risk such a poor investment at a time when the factory is likely barely surviving. Seems they can’t really afford to be so altruistic at this time. 7. Hi all, Is it crazy to buy an Ovation or Bravo with G1000 Non WA AS ? Been looking on a Bravo for awhile with G1000 and GIA62 (non waas), and no ADS-B Out. Engine at ~1200h with some top overhaul some years back. I know you can find the GIA63W modules, and install them. Prop and Gov is time for overhaul. Price wise it's not the low and with added costs for GIA63W and Prop/Gov it will be expensive. Question is, is a G1000 a No Go ? /Patrik
  8. You are correct that you cannot purchase the upgrade new any longer, but there are always salvage boxes from other aircraft, and Garmin gives full service for any repairs. I have upgraded three non waas Mooney, two ovations and an acclaim and I had to look and wait a month or two at the longest to find the parts. With the supply chain the way it is that’s probably quicker than anything new! In addition, finding the gia63w’s myself saved me over 10k each time.
  9. Hey Patrik, I'm very happy with my G1000 equipped Ovation 2GX. Since you are based in Sweden, Europe I assume that most of your flying will take place there. Based on this assumption: G1000 WAAS upgrade with used GIA63W units is doable. Take care of the HW revision! You will find all required information here on MS. Since advanced NextGen ADS-B services like weather, .. are not available in Europe, upgrading to ADS-B out can be achieved by simply exchanging the GTX33 to GTX33ES (and some SW configuration. AFAIK this upgrade mandates WAAS (for feeding the position information to the GTX). For traffic information you could utilize a system like AirAvionics AT1; targets can be fed to the MFD. By combining AT1 and GTX33ES you achive Traffic in via ADS-B (AT1) Traffic in via FLARM (AT1, all those gliders) Traffic out via FLARM with antenna diversity (AT1, the gliders can see you, maybe to late) Traffic out via ADS-B out (GTX33ES) While G1000 WAAS upgrade is not so hard, there currently seems to be no (affordable) upgrade path from S-TEC 55 X to GFC700. If you find a plane with GFC700 you might take a closer look (I don't think that there are any Bravo's with GFC700..). Best, Matthias
  10. Hello Together I have a basic question. Does anyone know if it was installed from a certain year of manufacture, standard a GIA63W? If so, from what year?
  11. I have G1000 with GFC 700 without the WAAS. I have bought the used GIA63W units along with the new WAAS antennas. Does anybody has any shop that can do this work for me. What kind of software update do I need? I understand that changing the hardware is the easy part. Any help or suggestions are appreciated
  12. Where did you find GIA63W? I'm thinking about the upgrade too.
  13. I experienced the GPSS fail when I bought my 2005 Ovation2. I think the baud rate on an RS232 output from the GIA63 to the S-TEC 55x was set wrong, probably happened when the GTX345R was installed for ADS-B. I think it defaults to an incorrect setting. When I did the WAAS upgrade it had to be reset again with the GIA63W. Paul Maxwell knows all about the GPSS fail. The first time he told the seller's agent how to fix it over the phone and the second time he reset it as part of the WAAS install. I don't know if the ILS deviation is a different problem or not. I don't recall that happening.
  14. Over inn Marketplace : As removed from late model Cirrus G5 : 2 Garmin G1000 WAAS units, GIA63W 011-01105-20 These units will provide WAAS up-grade for early non-WAAS G1000 equipped Mooneys . $22,000 for the pair, plus $100 Worldwide shipping.
  15. Looking to purchase a single GIA63W. Please DM me if you can help. PN ending in 01. Thanks in advance!
  16. Right, that’s because the nxi wont work with GIA63. It only works with GIA63W and GIA64. At least that’s my understanding.
  17. You are not saving any money by not having it. As the GIA63W WAAS boxes get more scarce they go up in price. Someday when you sell it the market will value it without WAAS. So when you sell it you "pay" for it anyway and you never got to enjoy any of the benefits from it. Better to talk to the 3 or 4 people that do this and get on their list for when WAAS boxes become available. Paul Maxwell and Brian Kendrick are two of the people who do these conversions. There may be a couple more across the country.
  18. Switching antennas really isn't going to tell you anything. Before you go ordering replacement/exchange radios, you should be switching the GIA63W units and setting them both Active/Active in the software (through the config - a dealer needs to do this). 1. If the problem moves, it's something other than the GIA63W 2. If the problem DOESN'T move, it's likely the GIA63W @philiplane's comments are well-taken. If you have a GTX345R, then your SW load will be a bit more involved as its imaging SW needs updating also. An active traffic system (TAS/TCAS) onboard adds more complexity. Essentially, you need to know EVERYTHING you have on board your airplane and how it connects to understand and know how to make a good problem statement to your shop.
  19. @Alan Maurer, SWR = Standing Wave Ratio. Overview here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/standing-wave-ratio LRU = Line Replaceable Unit. Your GIA63W radio modules located in the avionics bay, for example, are considered LRUs. Basically any computer that generally slides into/mounts into a rack in the remotely-mounted area/areas away from the cockpit that connect back to the cockpit in one or more forms to one or more systems. Edit: Send me a PM and I’ll reply with my number and we can talk tomorrow if this issue persists. Steve
  20. They can be upgraded now to current software level and WAAS. Don Maxwell and Brian Kendrick do WAAS upgrades to original G1000 airplanes with used GIA63W units that they currently have. Replacement screens are readily available on the secondary market and through Garmin.
  21. You could add a GDL88, but that costs almost as much as the GTX345R. Since you have the GTX33ES and you must have WAAS GIA63W's to be ADSB compliant, I would upgrade to the GTX345R (or RD if you are going flying in Canada) and your avionics shop should be able to sell your GTX33ES. My ADSB-IN is down right now due to a technical glitch, and I miss the awareness that being on PFD/MFD provides.. the ipad just isn't the same. I felt that paying the extra $$ for the 345R was worth it for ADSB compliance rather than upgrading the GTX33 to ES. I had the option for both, I just wish now that they had the GTX345RD at the time, since it looks like the future outside of the US will be satellite ADSB and therefore need two antennas.
  22. It is still possible to upgrade O2 GX with STEC-55X if you find a pair of GIA63W with correct revision (see post above). I did the update on my N913KS at ACG in 2020 (see my PIREP on MS). Graf Aviator did the update on N66YY last year at ACG. Just recently Justus at ACG upgraded N60TY and N192JM. All stated aircraft are 2004/2005/2006 O2 GX with G1000 & STEC-55X. To put a long story short: If you are able and willing to find the units and a capable MSC you can do the upgrade - still in 2022, even in good old Europe.. Best, Matthias
  23. A thread by Diamond owners says that Garmin will not service used/salvage GIA 63W that owners scrounge as a way to backdoor an upgrade to WAAS. They will only service it if it was installed new in your plane. The last post highlights that Garmin is able to establish the chain of custody from their records so there is no way to fool them. Garmin refuses to service GIA63W LRUs - diamondaviators.net
  24. I have an additonal question: I am thinking to upgrade to a GTX 33ES in my Acclaim with G1000 . My software version is 401.34. Would the G1000 accept the GTX 33ES in my system or what is needed to get ADSB-out? I am aware that addditonal wires need to be installled from the GIA63W to the GTX 33ES to provide GPS position information.
