  1. And don't forget his tiny home TFR just north of Wilmington. Guess he doesn't rate... 1nm, 1500' tops...
  2. Well, the good news is the weather will be breaking over the weekend as a cold front finally makes it way down from Canada. Temps next week are expected to be in the mid 80s.
  3. Scott -- you are bound to hit severe hot VFR this weekend. I will monitor for you and keep you posted. Where in in Delaware are you staying? Delaware is a SMALL state and if you are close, let's grab a meal -- my treat (including family if they are coming as well). If you are on the northern side of Delaware, you can fly outside of the Philly Class B and head up to northern Jersey VFR. In northern NJ, I would let my esteemed colleague Mike (aka 201er) tell you about the NYC area and corridor.
  4. Like duh, just about as long as my buddy Fantom.
  5. Guess what? Weather on the friggin map! What a novel idea
  6. Are there published specs on what the expected oil temps should be? It wasn't until I saw Bob's thread on oil temperatures that got me thinking that I never saw a real world expected oil temp range. I have always used the "acceptable" range provided in the POH, but we all know that is a big range and does not really show where these temps normally reside in flight.
  7. What I meant by correlation Bob was whether others like me are seeing the same thing with the relationship between oil temp and max rpm. We have the same data in our JPIs. Maybe you picked up on something that none of us ever noticed before.
  8. Bob -- I will graph out my rpm/oil temp as well as see how mine compares. Should be interesting to see if they correlate.
  9. Missing the important one for people who are interested: Price?
  10. BTW -- your TSOd direct factory replacement 930 should be accurate, but so was the factory tach. The 930 runs off of the mag and our planes originally had mechanical Tachs. Even my EI tach (direct replacement) and JPI 830 (secondary instrument) do not agree exactly even though they are getting the same information from the same source. At least I know they are within acceptable error of each other.
  11. Bob -- Proptach (designed for aviation usage) claims accuracy to 1 rpm: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Laser-Display-Optical-Tachometer/dp/B0062TT702 There are cheaper alternatives that will give you enough accuracy. This one is from the RC world, 2.5 rpm accuracy: http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/89_2049_609_610/products_id/13232/n/Model-Avionics-Skytach
  12. Thanks for reviving this thread. We haven't heard from him in a bit. Hope all is well and he has his instrument rating completed as well.
  13. And there in lies the rub. I am hoping some of you guys going to Oshkosh can report some good news on cheaper and more capable products. At the moment, I'm in a holding pattern with no EFC time... I would love to upgrade my Aspen to do ADS-B but only the GDL-88 appears available. Aspen's solution is still vaporware. I was hoping that a nice portable is available to tied me over, but considering everything is hardware/app dependent, you either need to live with an app you don't like and the hardware you do or the app you like with the hardware that will cost you too much to like... My range of emotions on this topic:
  14. Unfortunately, my wife works for the banking industry. There is no hiding for me
  15. Byron -- after reading your post, I'm just happy I have an aluminum cowl! That looks like a lot of work!
  16. Garmin is behaving like the gorilla they currently are in this market. They were the same way in the portable consumer GPS market for cars until Tom Tom and Magellan started eating away their business -- not to mention the smartphones! The days of customers buying a StreetPilot 7200 for a grand and paying extra for the map updates are over. As an Aspen owner, I don't like Garmin's position either. But it could be that they feel they have the financial means to outlive their competitors. The problem is that no one is putting a more affordable WAAS GPS out there. And I noticed that Garmin has been aggressively going after the experimental market.
  17. I think it depends on which facility you are being worked by. We all know their primary job is keep the metal separated and that assisting with weather is not a primary function. I find some facilities do point out weather and others are more in a reactive mode -- i.e. I need to ask for it. I can't say I have noticed an increase in "gloom and doom" warnings.
  18. Holy cow Jim! You have my original man size yokes! I still have mine in a box! I am currently using a Nexus 7 on a RAM yoke mount. My iPad is just a tad too big for a yoke mount (at least for me). Here is a picture of my Nexus 7 mounted on the yoke. It is about the same form factor as a iPad mini.
  19. Looks like $76 off what their normal price is. Wish they could get these gizmos under $1k... Too easy for the wife to find on the credit card statements!
  20. I have a Sigma Tek and love it. Had RC Allen that was in the shop a few times. That said, I'm sure others have had the opposite experience.
  21. BTW -- I agree, the F model is great! The 1975 is relatively AD free and has many of the early J options -- just not the speed mods.
  22. My JPI 830 is a new addition to my plane. I ran for years with an Insight GEM 602 that was great for monitoring cylinder/EGT temps and for leaning. Now with the additional parameters, I am getting the complete picture. Interesting, my gauge runs in the middle of the gauge as well. After reading Bob Belville's comments on his oil temps, I watched mine on my last flight. Although the gauge stayed mid range, my oil temp was over 200 degrees according to the JPI sensor. I will plot this out and post a copy of it compared to outside air temp. It was eye opening for me. I always thought I was in the 180 range, no so.
  23. Interesting that my last two avatars are being tossed around here! What the heck is going on here?!
  24. Hi All, Brett's graphics from his JPI 830 revealing his stuck valve situation was a great example of how to interpret the data. Any of us who own these marvels are certainly impressed with the information it displays, but also are overwhelmed as to what it all means. I thought I would start a thread on examples of engine monitor data and what it meant. Please feel free to show other examples, because I am here to learn too! Brett -- you think you could drop your example here? My first contribution is a fouled #2 cylinder plug on the left mag. You will notice that the #2 EGT temp (yellow arrow) was elevated right from engine start -- something I missed because a) I wasn't looking at the EGT temps and the engine was running smoothly. You will see when I took the rpm up to 2000 to do the run-up, the red arrow points to the dip in EGT temp and of course, now I felt it. I aggressively pulled the mixture at the blue arrow and then did a left right left mag check as indicated by the white arrows.
