  1. Jim - you're right. The AD was originally going to force the retrofit to raised caps but was removed. The raised caps were offered as an option when the AD was complied with but I stayed with my original Shaw caps. I corrected my original post. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. Raised caps were part of the original AD submission. It was later removed as part of the review but was offered as an option to those of us impacted by the AD. I remembered them because they looked like Piper caps. I opted to stay with the Shaw ones. As Jim points outs below, the newer style caps became available late due to other reasons. I had mine installed at the source O&N. The AD mods were done by my AI. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  6. BTW - didn't know the new style has locks on them! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. Mike - the current bladder systems use a different cap system than the older versions. Both however, keep the filler hole in the same location. I just happen to take a picture of the new style off of Dev's plane. Let me find it and post it. Found it: I have bladders in my plane for the past 24 years. No issues... 8. Good for you! I had a MX-170B in the panel when my KX-170B decided to shred its plastic tuning mechanism for the 3rd time. The MX replacement was able to broadcast and receive fine. The Nav signals were just as good as the original King if not slightly better. In the 15 years I owned it, it went back twice for service. Once for losing memory due to a failed internal battery and another time for the display flickering. They are prone to issues with the original rack. So, if your problems are not with the radio you are replacing, you may still issues even with the replacement radio. For the price you can't beat them. Their service was fine and reasonable. Let us know how it works out. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  9. There have been a bunch of good suggestions. I would try to find an LPV approach and see what that does. It will prove the HSI hardware is working. Alternatively, if you can switch between Nav 1 and 2, I would try the second Nav. As for the 650, on an ILS there is a specific capture zone for the conversion to the VLOC mode. Considering you are getting the signal for the localizer and can see the VLOC, that shouldn't be the issue. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  10. Tell me more about the max pulse switch... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  11. I actually have an LED installed. I'm one of those lucky guys who has the light switch on the throttle and it is connected to a relay. A lower rated relay probably can be used because I am using an LED but in case it ever gets switched back to incandescent, I should probably have the properly rated relay in the circuit. 12. I'm on a treasure hunt for the landing light relay for my 1975 F model. Apparently the relay was used by Mooney for two years. I have the part number and the name of the original manufacturer. I will begin by trying to find out if they exist today. If any of you had a need for this relay and have located one, would you share this with me? W89CQX-2 by Magnecraft
  13. Thanks for the comments. I also have a JPI 830 in the panel, so I have a way to see RPM, MP and fuel flow on both. They match very closely to each other. The RPM & MP have been in the panel for 2 years and the fuel totalizer has been installed for 20+. Been real happy with all of them. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  14. Ron -- which cover are you talking about? The glare shield? If so, it is the factory original one. There is an extension piece in place. It was installed when the 201 windshield was installed. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  15. One thing I do miss about having an ADF; listening to my favorite sports games on the old AM frequencies... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  16. I switched out my MP, Tach and fuel pressure to EI units. The FP-5PL has been in there since the early 90s. They are considered primary so they can replace anything on your MEL or type certificate. Here is a photo of the 3 EI units I have: Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  17. Also post some pictures of your panel. This is what mine looked like:
  18. As OR mentioned, the big thing with these audio panels is the wiring to the jacks. If you buy a 4 place audio panel intercom, you will be looking at the labor to pull the side panels to run wires to the rear for seat jacks. If you are planning on doing a radio upgrade, it would be cheaper to try to bundle upgrades.
  19. Try pulling the ALT Field breaker while it is doing it. See if taking the alternator offline makes it go away. You may be dealing with a problem with the alternator.
  20. Riley is where Vic was... Here are my thoughts on the stuff you mentioned: The Avionics guy quoted me $16000 from the hip for a 430W and KT-74. I think that is a bit high. I see 430Ws showing up for around $7k from people upgrading to GTNs. With the KT-74 street prices around $2,600, I agree $14k is much closer to the right installed price. I agree with the others. The 430s are nice, but the GTN 650 is what you want. I can go with a GNC255A and the Stratus ESG later. The 255A would be about $6000 installed and the ESG about $4200. My plane was VOR only until I upgraded to the GTN. I would not go non-GPS knowing what I know now. Since I would be taking a loan for all this, what should I reasonably expect on cost for an Aspen Pro retrofit? I am non-autopilot, so I was thinking around $13000. Would safe to assume? I think if you shop around you may be able to get one installed for $11k - $12k. If Riley is tight for panel space, the Aspen will free up the VSI spot for you. If you want to compare notes on upgrade costs, let me know. I did my upgrades in the Fall of 2012, but it should help show reasonable install costs. I did get a number of different quotes from shops around me. I know our planes are pretty close to the same age. As you probably know, I did the big jump with the avionics. Never regretted the decision. My situation was a bit different. I have owned my F since 1991 and have been steadily saving for an avionics reserve for years. So, other than a shaky hand as I was writing the check for the avionics bill, I have been enjoying the heck out of the avionics and the fact Vic is much more capable.
  21. Makes you wonder how Stinky Pants does it. Never mind. I know. He has the prostrate the size of a pea. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  22. I liked the yellow ones right up to winter. I found sticking stones in my ears more comfortable than the yellow ones in winter. I do like the black ones. I think theses were a new addition to his offerings. BTW -- I went to their website. Fun N Sun must have been good to them. They are sold out. Even posting a "don't even try to order" message. 23. At least you guys aren't talking about tattooing the serial number of your Harley or your Mooney on your arm. I had a friend who had 3 serial numbers tattooed on his from his two knuckleheads and a panhead. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  24. There is absolutely a break-in requirement for a new or overhauled prop. It is called picking up your first stone chip. [emoji36] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  25. And don't forget the most important question of all; how much your passengers weigh. You make for a great front guy... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
