  1. I should be clear, I am not in a hurry to sell. Selling is recognition that I'm not Methuselah.

The only place I've mentioned selling is here on MS.

I'd be happy to continue to fly for months, particularly since most of us are locked in.

If I get to where I need to move it I can call Jimmy.

This seems like an incredible deal...
I have just started planning to buy a cross country plane for our small family of 3, and this seems to check all of the boxes for what I was looking for. Unfortunately, I don't think this will still be on the market by the time I am actually ready to pull the trigger. I have just started to work on budgeting, market research, etc.

Out of curiosity, what kind of cruise numbers do you get with all of the mods? Good luck selling.

PS: I am pretty sure that I saw this plane at Oshkosh last year, and if this is the one I remember, it was even more impressive in person.

    Thanks!

We were camping with Mooney Caravan last year at KOSH.

I generally cruise at 145-150 ktas LOP at gross weight. (8.7 gph is 65% power.) If I'm looking for maximum range I'll dial in 8.0 gph. With 64 gallons fuel and CiES accurate fuel gauges that's close to 7 hours plus VFR reserves or close to 1000 nm, no wind. Last summer my grandson and I non-stopped Grand Canyon to Oklahoma City and then Oklahoma City to home drome in Western NC. Little or no help from winds.

I personally don't believe in spending money JUST to increase UL or cruise speed.  However, IF something breaks and I can improve either of those while improving something else, I'm willing to spend a little extra.

<snip> If our exhaust system needs to be repaired, I'll likely want to replace it with a powerflow.  <snip>

I went to a PFS exhaust when I needed a new muffler in 8 years ago. Happy improvement but it cost me 3 pounds UL. (old: 17 vs. PFS: 20 pounds.)

  4. One thingy I don’t think has been mentioned... MGW of 200 hp models. An E is 2575#, an F and most Js are 2740#, and late models are 2900#.

So, would you rather take off from Flagstaff, e.g., in an E at 2675# or a late J at 2800#? The E is 100# over, the J is 100# under MGW. Essentially same wing/airframe, same power. Runway required? Climb performance? Whatcha think?

So, spending several AMU to get 4# additional UL... really?

I'm curious Bob, I know this plane is worth $110k easy, but does the insurance company agree on the hull value?  I had a hard time getting my insurance carrier to up the value of my plane after a major avionics upgrade - and that really makes a difference for an owner of a beautiful plane like this - if they (ins. co.) want to write it off after a medium-sized mishap.

I've had $95k hull on the plane for several years. I could have raised it to $100k this year but I left it at $95k. This would be enough that the carrier would not be tempted to total the plane say after a $35k gear up.

  7. @MooneyStrike , you should contact Jimmy Garrison @ All American near San Antonio. https://www.allamericanaircraft.com/Default.htm He has an inventory of Mooneys plus he brokers more.

And he recently partnered with Paul Maxwell of Don Maxwell Aviation. http://donmaxwell.com/

Get Jimmy's valuation worksheet. He puts a value on the bladders, one piece windshield, airframe and engine hours... and much more.

Here's the model history Anthony referred to: http://www.mooneyevents.com/chrono.htm

FWIW, IMNSHO, you're targeting the perfect Mooney. My '66E cruises at 145 ktas on 8 g/h. And that ought to be doable by most 50 year old Es.

Working on fitting the lower cowling. I expected to have an issue with the carb air box and that is a definite need to redesign. The much more sloped cowling is going to require a new lower profile carb air box. What I didn’t expect was an issue with the landing light. I found that the O-360 muffler hits it. I now understand why as the difference with the fuel injected O-360’s moves the muffler down and aft. O-360 is up and forward due to the carb. I will have to move the landing light to the center on the carbureted Mooneys. I’m also thinking I will need to move one of the air fittings on the muffler shroud. I did manage to get it on today and do some initial fitting to verify if I’ll have any other issues.

The advantage of downloading the data...

The graphical output over time makes things like a loose wire or interactions of various variables more readily obvious...

There is a piece of hardware that gets installed with many pressure sensors called a (calibrated air hole) (Insert name here) It’s purpose is to level out the bouncy data caused by the real pressure variations...

Lots of natural variations caused by cycling fuel pumps can be expected... and messy for digital data...

I always ask @Bob_Belville what that device is called... because his memory is at least 10X what mine is... :)

    Best regards,

JPI called the in line thingy a "snubber" when they gave us one to dampen MP display.

Morning Bob. I'm located in Frisco, Texas. I filled out some information in my profile! I'm going to send this sheet that the last mechanic attached and then I'm gonna send him what I typed up and calculated as well. Hopefully this will help in correcting almost 2 decades worth of an error

Tahir, you probably know, but in case, you're a short flight over to KGGG, Longview TX where one of the best Mooney specific shops in the world operates. If your new plane hasn't been annualed by someone like Don you might want to have him go over the plane.

Thanks Bob! Any M20E do's and don'ts I should be aware of? First Mooney and first airplane!

Good morning Tahir, yeah we have lots of dos and don'ts. My first Mooney experience was 50+ years and 3000+ hours ago. Most of those years and hours have been in '66Es.

Where are you based? Can you find your profile and fill out some info and stay plugged in to MooneySpace. You'll learn something new every time you visit.

The owner/operator is responsible for the W&B but the IA that last annualed the plane should have gone through the logs and the W&B. (It takes an A&P to sign off on any changes to the W&B and that includes correcting old errors.

Most of us would re-weight our plane only as a last resort. Most planes gain some weight over the years and weighing the plane and changing the W&B to reflect dirt, paint, etc. will cost useful load. (Our E models have a 2575# max weight weight. But we have the same wing, the same gear, and essentially the same engine as the F and J models whose max is 2740#.)

  12. You want AGL over in Morganton, NC. And if that Mooney can't go that far for some reason, any reason, then you'll have your answer and it's time to find a different Mooney.

Morristown to KMRN (AGL Aviation Services) is less than 1 hour in a Mooney.

But before you ask a seller to take his plane somewhere you should be pretty sure you want the plane and you can agree with the seller on price and details.

The PPI is to find serious airworthiness issues and potentially expensive problems in these 50 year old machines... engine, airframe corrosion, fuel tank leaks, and a few Mooney specific gotchas.

@hypertech, great to see you and your nice Ovation this week! Glad you had a good experience here.

@AGL Aviation is sponsoring the 2 breakfasts at our Mid /Atlantic Formation Clinic @KHKY May 15-17. They did the same last year and spent 2 days with us. Lynn had tools and parts with him just in case.

The Maces' daughter Adrienne starts flying lessons Friday. She might be a pilot before she's  licensed driver! She's learning in a  C172 but is spending a lot of time sitting in their M20C which should be flying next week!
