Mooney Summit II Oct 24-26, Panama City Beach

Back home in NC a couple of hours ago..., we had a great time, perfect weather and an extremely well done seminar. Thanks to all the folks who made it happen. Sign us up for the next one! Hope to see more Mooniacs @ the AOPA fly in 11/8, KSSI and/or @ our "Mooneys over the Mountains" fly in @ KMRN 11/15. -

Summit started last night with a large reception in a condo penthouse with a water view. Mooniacs from all over. And name tags! Sweet. (Actually, there was a well attended session in the afternoon conducted on sealing fuel tanks but we have O&Ns so we went to the beach.) Mike's looking great and he and Ron and their wives were perfect hosts. Food, drink, recognition, and lots of nice door prizes. There was a shy couple there from KSLO and OWGs from KERV and KGGG. We spent time with another a of transplanted Tar Heels (KEDE). "Friends" we had never met. Lots to talk about. But we're missing some frequent posters here... next year guys, clear your calendars. -

Got in around noon, gorgeous day. We did happy hour @ Fishale's Pub. Looking forward to meeting Mooniacs! Checked in @ Oasis, 828 430 1711, brought a few bottle of Muscadine wine (dry). -

Don, Nancy and I have a full sized car reserved (Enterprise) and plan to arrive about 1 today. My plane has O&N bladders so I do not plan to do today's workshop but we'll be happy to help with transportation. -

We plan to arrive mid day Friday. And stay through Sunday afternoon. I have not rented a car yet and wonder if we'll need one for anything other than getting back and forth to the airport? -

$300.(used) Nosedragger Dragger. Perfect tug for a Mooney. (The 24V battery was shot but I had 2 12V Concordes good enough for this purpose.)

M20F Speed Checks... Comparison Please?
Bob_Belville replied to Ragsf15e's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Won't work for the reason explained earlier that flying a track rather than a heading will have you tacking into the crosswind component with consequent loss of ground speed. Think about it like this: suppose you fly a box with north, west, south, east legs returning to the starting point. Suppose the wind is exactly out of North. The average of gs of the north and south legs would give you your tas but not if you took the total distance divided by the total time since you would be flying longer on the northbound leg while your gs was slower. And the east and west legs with 90 deg cross winds would cover less ground than the same time spent on an east or west heading so the gs would be slower. Got that? -

I think Adrian's reference to calm air was smooth, non-turbulent conditions to get a stable airspeed reading. Not that you should or could find a day without wind. Since we'd like to get a reading accurate to a knot or 2, we will have to use a technique that accounts for wind. But we can eliminate the high school trig calculations by flying in line with the wind. -

ISTM that absent the Aspen type display of wind, if you steer to have the GPS track match the GPS heading you're in line with the wind and you can note GS on that heading and it's reciprocal. -

Alternate test procedure, simpler and quicker. (Less dependent on steady state winds.) Since the Aspen displays the wind direction (E6B calculation comparing heading to track) why not turn to that heading and note the GPS GS, then turn 180 deg note GPS GS again. The TAS should be the average of the 2, independent of any pitot/static error. And if you compare that average to the displayed TAS you'll have the ASI error, at least for that IAS. If not, why not? -
M20F Speed Checks... Comparison Please?

Rags, thanks!. You need to study the details more carefully. The 9500' flight is @ 70% power rich of peak. The 8500' flight is 65% power, lean of peak. The RAM air is open @ 9500 and closed @ 8500, and the RPM is 2540 @ 9500 and 2350 @ 8500. Apples and oranges. I suppose I would have been over 160 KTAS @ 8500 at a higher power setting & ROP. But I don't have a pic of that to share. -

I suppose the Aspen which "sees" the IAS, OAT, and PALT can calculate TAS (think E6B) as accurately as the precision of your ASI, the OAT sensor, and the Pressure sensor. -

Yeah, I suspect the 180 knots flights stick in your mind longer that those in the 130 range. -

All ground speed? Without knowing winds, TAS could be anything? -
M20F Speed Checks... Comparison Please?
Bob_Belville replied to Ragsf15e's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
All knots. KIAS is indicated air speed in knots, KTAS is true air speed in knots. Both are displayed on the Aspen. (My "old" E has about every mod available. I would expect performance should be about as good as a J. Perhaps better since power to weight ratio is higher.) -

I have 3 items at the end of my check list before I take the active: mixture in, electric fuel pump on, clear the floor area for the JBar. -
With NEXRAD, Stormscope, and George, I don't mind at all spending en-route time in clouds but it can be tough on old paint, particularly leading edges, and props blades.

Romania has the Carpathian mountains, similar to the Appalachians, but I suspect he's not dealing with high density altitude take offs. Most of the population lives in the equivalent of NJ.
