  1. Also a tailwind on base. Between the louder wind noise and higher ground speed, it’s easy to misinterpret higher than actual airspeed. Much better to read AOA from an AOA indicator rather than to infer it from a multitude of usually-but-not-always coincident sources (pitch attitude, wind noise, ground speed, airspeed indicator). Add a little heavy on the rudder after the base overshoot and jittery nerves and it’s not a good outcome
  2. Altimeter 30.13. So pressure altitude is about 200ft lower. When ADSB shows 600, should be 800MSL. Still kinda low.

Sounds similar to the one in Canada not too long ago but with a much worse outcome KSGJ 251556Z 07010KT 10SM OVC041 21/16 A3013 10 knot tailwind on base leg would imply about a 74 knot indicated diminishing to 63 in the base to final turn. Popped door not only requires maintaining focus but also carrying additional airspeed. Something about how the air flows or the airspeed indicator indicates appears to require about an additional 10 knots of airspeed to maintain the same angle of attack in my experience. I NEVER let anyone else close my door and it hasn't happened in a decade since.

And you can potentially go missed and climb IFR on a visual but not SVFR. Also, a visual approach can get you in descending out of instrument conditions.   11. I posted a video of gear retract in 201. Gear retraction began 8 seconds after lift off and was completed 10 seconds after liftoff. The right main continued spinning well past 20 seconds after liftoff. Seeing this convinced me to tap brakes.
  12. Yes. I have made it a habit to tap the brakes after every takeoff in my Mooney after seeing what’s happening with my wheels in this video of one of my takeoffs a while ago: 2:35 into the video. I was surprised how long the right wheel was spinning after retraction. There may be some wear from loading from gyroscopic precession while swinging spinning wheels. But more importantly it may be spraying mud/debris into the wheel wells. Particularly after parking on grass (think Oshkosh). So, it’s become SOP not to think about differentiating when the wheels are clean vs not. I tap the toe brakes while reaching for the gear lever.

  15. You can get cleared through TFRs too. Same deal, just squawking and talking.

  18. I don’t use foreflight but here’s a poor man’s imitation. Doesn’t look like much but I’d been down to Florida 5 times. Tampa area twice, Naples twice, Fort Lauderdale. Also out to Dallas, Chicago, and Roanoke.
  19. Wow, some CB you are. I know at least a dozen mooniacs who would have made the trips just cause they already paid for the sticker!
