  1. AWI did a great work on my exhaust couple years ago when I put the "new" engine on my plane. I actually sent the exhaust to Dawley that I used in the past but Hartzell parent Co. acquired it and closed the duplicated facility. Dawley phone # was still working so I suspect the same is happening with Knisley Welding.

As for pricing: it was definitely somewhat higher then I used to pay at Dawley but not excessive at the time. But with disappearance of smaller shops I can see pricing getting higher due to lack of competition.

I was listening to an aviation podcast on my bike ride tonight and they said Textron has no intention of shutting down production, but their order books are full and they just stopped taking orders until they could clear out the order books a bit. They didn’t want to increase their production capacity, which  is about 10 Bonanzas and 10 Barons a year.

That was hearsay. The company isn’t commenting.

GAMA 2023 production data is showing 5 Barons and 5 Bonanzas. I would not call that a "production"...

  3. I believe the upper one is up 1968 model and bottom one is newer, 1969 and up.

It doesn't look interchangeable to me but not sure. I would call LASAR parts department and ask for Dan; he would have more details.

Some 10 years ago I replaced most hardware in the system including that pivoting spherical, IIRC. There was improvement, for sure.

    Good luck.

  4. I'm not sure about MIT but seems like a lot of work comparing to the jackscrew lubrication. Having said that, I'd like to do it eventually, maybe on next annual.

I seem to remember one of the characters on old Mooney list describing he just installed couple of zikr fittings to the Trim assy to flush and fill it with grease. Not sure if I'd like to do that...

I went with ultraleather to protect my useful load, and hope the alcantara will be a comfy seating material... If not I still have my sheepskins that can go right back on. Nothing beats the feel and smell of real quality leather, though! I bought a bunch of hides years ago, but decided to save weight instead.

    Scot,

Your seats are looking Could you estimate what the weight difference is?

It sometimes surprising that interior weights are significantly different. Few years ago I installed Airtex carpet kit in my F and it was 10-15lb lighter then the one I had! Maybe was all the dirt collected in it in previous 20-30 years? :D

Your baffle seals look great, just mine that I ordered from Guy, but that wingtip looks precariously close to the wall.

    Well,

it is close but it's really looking closer then it is from the angle. I always position the plane closer to the left wall to allow better access to the RHS of the plane where I have sofa, work surface, old desk and such... And I use an old riding mower to push the plane up the incline and over the door rail.

This is how baffle seals should look. My corners are not connected so they overlap but are not fastened together so when they fold down they don’t ribbon but lay flush (more or less) against the top of the cowl. My temps are also a quite cool high 200s to low 300s in cruise and mid to low 300s in climb depending on OAT. What’s up with the extra plumbing to the flow divider? I have a 67F but it does not have a second fuel supply hose coming through the baffle wall. Also, what brand of ignition harness is that?

    Ross,

very good catch! This was taken during the engine install 2 years ago and at the time we thought this was the way to plumb it to the Fuel pressure sensor (Lycoming didn't provide the hose for that) as we initially thought the new fuel servo didn't have a port got that. Obviously, we corrected that...

You are right about the corners and that is how I ended up on LHS. Guy's precut seal kit, however has a Aft Right seal too short and doesn't reach to the edge (1.5-2" short) so I have the right side seal attached to it. Not ideal, the best would be to get a roll of the silicone and make a new one, longer... I did mention this to Guy but I don't think he'll make a new die for that seal.

No idea on the harness, it came with factory engine and unfortunately, Champion spark plugs but all is good and still looking new. If someone knows, it would be skip who also recently got the factory engine.

    Cheers,

  8. Yannis,

you got some good advice above. I would add a few things...

First, M20F does not have an old style doghouse but baffles with seals similar to M20J. In 19 years of ownership I never had big issues with high cylinder temps. Very rarely would I have CHTs over 400F and that only on very hot days with long climb and slow to escape the turbulence out west. Normally my engine runs very cool and since I replaced with the factory rebuilt, I sometimes don't get 300F on CHT1. I'm talking PNW winters (not to cold) while at standard air temps my CHTs are 300-340F Climbs, <370-380F.

I do have the new baffle seals from GeeBee (Guy) which I believe would help you a lot seeing yours are fairly old and not springy, as Ross put it. The seals I received are not ideal, if you look at the Aft Right corners, where two seals meet, it creates the gap when upper cowl is installed but still i can't complain about the temps. i think the kit would help you specially as your seals are few piece on sides and aft with gaps where the air would escape and not cool the cylinders.

One more thing I'd point is that on the old engine I had PRC sealant applied at the edge of the baffle to the Cylinder and engine. I think this helped in the past with CHTs but on the new engine I didn't bother as I don't think i need it. Good luck.

Here's what me and Mrs. OTreeLemur did last weekend.  When we bought our J in late '22, I thought the tail number looked naked.  We fixed that.   It was a long, fun weekend!

You guys did a great job!

Two esthetic things I remember from when I was shopping for my Mooney paint job years ago:

    1. Have a N numbers slant forward to match the TE angle of Vertical tail; 2. Get the Registration letters with the shadow. I see you have both. :D

Thankfully while the Chinese owned it they sealed the fcotyr roof and invested a small fortune in LED lighting, but yes they have much more space than they need. They would be smart to partner up with someone or take on a lot more contract parts business.

    Lance,

Do we know how many people are working at Mooney these days? Some years ago it was only 7-8 IIRC but I believe they added some work force as they took on making more parts for the fleet. My point: with their small workforce they can't even produce small quantity of parts for our fleet let alone win a contract and execute it profitably for the OEM or other big company. They would need to hire and train a number of people and that cost money, not to mention it's hard to get skilled workforce in Kerrville; whoever were there before are long gone.

In my view, current owners bought a company from Chinese in order to sell and make money, however they didn't pan out. I know they had an interested party visiting the facility that my employer at the time worked with but them being and OEM "of the future" (composite, electric propulsion and such) I saw no way that would happen. We all saw their sales pitch at Bizquest few years ago...

Sad but that is reality, IMO. I don't think they will ever make a new plane and now I'm afraid parts are endangered species as well. :(

  11. Don,

Are you saying parts that Factory can make will not be made anymore by outside Vendor?

Or does that includes ALL parts including one that Mooney never built, like landing Gear pucks, Engine intake ducts and such? This really doesn't make sense.

I have my concerns regarding Mooney factory support and parts availability for 4-5 years now and LASAR sale and move to OR didn't help as they stopped making most of their PMA parts.

Cash for parts purchases by Mooney didn't seem to be the issue, since they offered to prepay for the parts they needed and were denied by Mooney.  Mark seemed to think it was going to take pressure on Mooney by Owners to try to change their policy.  Nobody seems to know why Mooney has taken this position on outsourced parts.  Apparently, if a part can be fabricated at Mooney, they will make it, though.

We recently completed and passed the AD for the control wheel shafts. Out of curiosity I looked on eBay and some salvage sites to see what the theoretical cost and availability would be in having to replace one of them. I noticed that for the same advertised part number, some shafts have a small bearing or something it looks like in the centre and some don't? If I remember correctly ours did not, but what's the difference? Are the interchangeable? And why are they advertised with the same part number if they aren't the same?

The part number in question is 72005-1, which is the LH control wheel.

These are the two ads right on top of each other on eBay I was contemplating.

I think this bushing is a separate p/n 914020-22 and you get it included with the sale. Don't expect from the sellers to know all the intricacies of reading IPC or spending too much time on it. Good luck.

  13. About year ago I installed a seal from Aircraft Door Seals LLC. it took less then an hour with a help of my friend. This is my second door seal install on my plane in 19y of ownership. Second set of hands helped a lot.

Due to hand build nature of our planes, your fit might be different but it was very difficult to close the door after the install. Issue was the aft frame, where the lock pin engages; it needed some local trimming which was minor. Also, needed to trim seal at the bottom aft section of the door, maybe some 10" long and tapered. This helped significantly as the door can now be closely aligned to the fuselage. Trick is to start with the small trim and then increase it (longer and deeper) as needed until you are happy with door fit and sealing.

    Good luck

Are you using an EFB (ForeFlight, G Pilot, WingX, etc.)?  There should be one in there.

Unless you're an FF and Android user like me! :D  If that's the case, look at FltPlan Go.

    Pete,

I used WingX since beginning but dropped it and switched to FlyQ EFB which I also have on the iPhone. I guess I could try that. fltPlan is what I use on PC and have it on my iPad but I'm not proficient using it...

I'll definitely spend some time checking out EFBs and also apps people recommend...

  15. Good questions,

My IA handled similar situation (adding USB "Smart charger" to already installed CGR30 engine monitor) with logbook entry and referring to the existing STC/337.

Assume one install 2*G5 via STC+337, does installing GAD13 (for OAT, TAS, Wind) require another 337? or logbook entry will do?

I asked Frank Crawford (tech support) and Shana Weiss (manufacturing engineer) at Mooney about the holes. Neither knows why they are there. Frank speculated that they may be tooling holes since they didn't show up on the engineering drawings. He did confirm that Mooney does not use any sealant in the wing skin joints, so I guess it is just the tightness of the joint and the paint film that keeps water out.

Since most holes seem to be forward of the wing tanks, perhaps they are there to vent the wing in case of a tank leak. It wouldn't make sense to me to have water drains that are  not at the low spot when parked because many airplanes spend a lot more time tied down in the rain than flying in the rain.

    Skip,

Are you referring to the hole in the removable access panels? tooling hole is a reasonable explanation, I also use them to hook in a piece of the wire and hold them down when re-installing the panel.

As for lack of Fay surface seal on skin laps and ribs; if they used it our integral fuel tanks would not leak. ;)

I'm a soon-to-be owner of an m20c, looking for a CFI in the Seattle area with experience in manual gear short bodies.  Any suggestions beyond themooneyflyer.com?

Where is the plane located? What is your insurance minimum dual requirement?

As Pete mentioned, Mooney Flyer has a good list of CFI through the US you can use to ferry the plane and get some duel time and instruction at the same time. That would be a good experience to have as well but weather at PNW is challenging at this time of the year so you must be flexible.

    https://themooneyflyer.com/cfi.html

While having a Training is never bad idea and I hear MAPA's PPP is a great program you don't need to wait for it to get checked out.

I was a low time pilot when I got my complex endorsement on club's '77 M20J in few hours with CFI. I never had problems landing it and learned a lot. Few year later, after flying rented Arrow and Cutlass RG I bought my F in CA. I got the checked out from CFI familiar with my plane and flew it home to Seattle. I did have generator failure over KHIO which made a decision to overnight in NorCal and continue next day very good.

Welcome to Mooney ownership Where do you plan to keep it? Hangar or Tie down?

After some searching, we ended up using GRANITIZE™ Aviation X20-18 AECI 3 Colorless Brightwork Aircraft Exterior Protector.  Not cheap but apparently it's been approved by several aircraft manufacturers.  A local aircraft detail shop uses it on corporate jets.  Looks great.  Will be interesting to see how long it lasts before the spinner needs a polish and re-coat.

    Wow,

it is expensive but then it also have an "aviation" in description. :D
