  5. Quote: DaV8or With the speed mods on my '66 F I too am challenged with the 120 gear limit and 105 flaps. It's managable, but I keep thinking how cool it would be to have speed brakes... Hmmmmm.
  6. Quote: PilotBob Has anyone considered using adult depends? My hanger neighbor in his 80's says that's what he uses whenever he's on a long flight. He says their good for 3 pees. LOL!!!
  7. This year, going to and from oshkosh, I just broke down and used the gatorade bottle. A couple obserations: - Holy smokes, a bladder holds a lot (filling a quart bottle was not a problem) - You get in tune with your physiological needs (sorry, I guess this may be gross, but before I just would not think about it). If I am making an early morning flight, even if I empty my bladder before takeoff, then invariably it will be full again around 9am - My enjoyment of long flights went up immensely. The comfort of an empty bladder out-weighs the inconvenience and having to deal with the bottle afterwards... however, I would not really want to take a leak in front of anyone besides my wife (and even then, she's looking the other way). - I rigged something up similar to the go-girl for my wife to try, and try she did.... but she was just not comfortable enough to make it happen. She still needs to land to use the facilities.
  8. Thank you for sharing your experience. One thing I will add, and I mean this in a friendly way, is that a while ago I got to thinking and decided that I would hand-fly most flights that I do for IFR currency (I have an s-tec 50 but no GPSS). I do use the autopilot on 'real' trips as needed, but my personal belief is that a lot of the required 6-month proficiency is in basic attitude control while in the muck -- basically exercising the brain-to-muscle connections enough to prevent one's self from getting vertigo. I recall an IPC I had several years ago, before I bought my Mooney, where I was really figting vertigo (I was way out of currency and of course had a CFII along). I kept the airplane where it was supposed to be going (this was conducted in actual IMC, and no autopilot available), but it was very challenging to fight off the vertigo and maintain proper attitude
  9. Call LASAR. They are cheap.
  10. Foreclosed on itself eh? I have to admit thats the first I've heard of that maneuver. I wonder how they structured their debts where that worked out. Anyone have the number for their accountant & legal team for when I set up shop? One thing I can never figure out is why anyone would invest in a startup airplane manufacturer or airline. Ever... but I suppose I am thankful that people are willing to take those kinds of idiotic moves risks.
  11. I am another happy skycharts pro user. For mounting, I bought the Griffin ipad "folio" case (very professional looking BTW), and simply flip that open, and clip the 'flap' end onto my standard kneeboard. The arrangement works really well until I need to do something else with the kneeboard, which is rare.
  12. I suggest asking LASAR. They are very straight forward. I suspect, but I am not sure, that LASAR's kit may be superior when it comes to the glare shield.
  13. Quote: flyboy0681 I'm hoping to sign the papers on my M20J later this week. Sometime in the next few months I'll be starting my IR training. I have a CFII that I have been using for the past few years (as a renter) that I really like and get along with well, but he doesn't have any Mooney experience. My question is, just how critical is it to use an instructor that doesn't have Mooney time? Please, honest based answers only.
  14. Get the airplane on jacks and trace where this play/slop is coming from. Frankly, it can be many places. There are several bushings that can wear out, the actual nosegear structure (pivot truss), and steering horn that can cause this sort of play - in addition to the shock donuts.
  15. Quote: FlyDave Don't you want to swing the compass with the engine running and all the normally running avionics on so it's swung in "flight configuration"?
  16. You could try to go out and swing it first to see if that helps. To the disbelief of my A&P who felt all Mooney compasses were a crap shoot because of the steel frame, I got it to swing within tolerances. Tools needed: brass screwdriver, plumb bob (hang from tail to help align the plane on the rose), towbar, and a couple hours to position the airplane oh so many times on the compass rose.
  17. There is nothing stopping a powered airplane pilot from making power off approaches frequently for such practice... in fact maybe half of my landings are with power to idle on the downwind.
  18. Congratulations, and thank you for your efforts!
  19. I have stock injectors, but I have have had a heck of a time getting to run LOP at WOT... and from what I recall it is worse with ram air. On the other hand, I have no problems running LOP up to about 60% power at low altitudes. Because of these I use LOP when I'm flying around the local area for fun or practicing maneuvers; that is about it. It is as if the last bit of opening the throttle and/or ram air mess with the induction system just a bit.
  20. This is just my opinion, but I believe that the aircraft cover will scratch the plexi more readily than the sun shades. The cover can move around in the wind and slides against the windows while putting it on/off. With that said, I have both cover & reflectvive shades.
  21. Quote: Dan So far I have learned two methods of landing a trainer Cessna in crosswinds. The first is a crab method, seems to work well. The second is a slip type of method. This one I learned last night in about 15k cross winds and it felt kind of unsettling. (landing on one wheel feels weird..) I assume everone here is familiar with these methods? My specific question is how does everyone land their Mooney in cross winds? Is one method better than the other for Mooney? Or is it just preference with no real reason behind the method? ??? Thanks for the info. Dan
  22. Quote: DaV8or Don't they have an ap where you can just freehand write on the iPad just like paper? I have it on my Droid phone. Seems like you would never need to move the iPad just to write a note. Does it not work that well in practice?
  23. I have had several fouled plugs that would not clear unless going to full power (note: mixture rich) for a few seconds. If that doesn't fix it, its time to shut down and pull the cowl. I carry all the tools to remove/replace/clean plugs and also a brand new one as spare.
  24. Very interesting. Can you tell me one piece of information: Did the engine get run after new oil was added (i.e. at the oil change preceeding this event), and then was the quick drain examined for leaks? In other words, did it pass a leak check and then open up later on, or was there no leak check?
