  1. I'd go with Jeff's advice... Buy the O3. The PPI won't be as involved as one on a 1965 C on it's fourth OH. Best regards, -a- More less than helpful info off the top of my head....
  2. A good case of beer coming in could offset the price of a good case of oil going out..? Wish I could help with the transaction..., -a-
  3. Bob, Soldering expert gone wild?
  4. What type of Dr. has such a strong background in welding, Bill? Best regards, -a-
  5. You are off base (using your words) by aligning aviation expectations to automotive expectations... Hector and company are one of the best suppliers in the Mooney world. When you work with Hector, you are getting the best of what is available. If it is not available, he has presented other solutions at a pretty low price. In the automotive world they produce 40,000 of the same model car they produce each year. In this case, it's more like a Rolls where they only make a few per year. $200 won't cover the RR price of repair. Since you can't get an exact match, try to do something creative that stands off intentionally...? Ask Hector for some ideas like this as well. The leather didn't age good enough for the sewing process. Is there a leather conditioning product to prevent that from happening? A slightly larger logo design may help repair the existing leather? I am trying to supply positive ideas to a physical leather challenge. No attack intended... Hope that helps, -a-
  6. Hank and Chris... Engineers doing finance... Not to be confused with financial engineering..! Where is Thunder today? Best regards, -a-
  7. It is as complex as buying a house that is far away, without the regulation that helps protect the buyer.... what makes sense to you...? I could only afford to travel to see a plane once to see it and then come back and buy it. If it failed, I just threw away my personal vacation money for a year...? When you are buying from a known source, they can help you with understanding the probability of a plane being able to pass an MSC PPI. Working with Jimmy and David, you can do that. Before first visit... Starts with many pictures, long technical description, and every logbook page copied... If financing, get the qualification work going... On first visit... Earnest money. Allows the buyer first right to buy the plane. Keep others away to complete the purchase. Build Purchasing Agreement. Write down the buyer's expectations. AW items and Nav equipment. After first visit... Finance arrangements. Pink paper registration? PPI @MSC. Fix AW and other things in the PA. Down payment. Transition training. Fly home (your home) in IMC with transition trainer. I used AAA to help organize each of these steps. Each step cost money. The more expensive the plane, the more important this becomes.... Not covering these steps can be even more expensive. Best regards, -a-
  8. Chris, My deepest apologies... Lost control of where I was going... I tried to define what worked for me, then realized how unique I might be.... Financing machinery is a passion, as is buying and selling machinery... So if you are unique like me...? (1) Borrow responsibly. Know that the finance world likes to give bigger loans than the end users can comfortably repay. (2) Purchase responsibly. The PPI is an expensive step for your wallet's protection. (3) Finances are personal, what works for one person may change over time and will be different for other people. (4) looking back over my tracks, I refinanced my house to essentially pay for a fully functional plane... Really financially dumb if the the plane doesn't work out and can't be sold back at a reasonable price, in a short enough period of time. (5) I also experimented with the MS post from a couple years back on the QQQ ETF... a positively lesson in risk management for finance. There were some brash risky statements in there... (6) my car was bought second hand and is old, really old...oil changes and mechanical work done by me... Latest advice came from a member of MS Re: Electronic ignition systems... The money has to come from somewhere. More income, smaller house, older cars, DIY, serious level of buy-in from the family, etc... (7) financing a plane is OK with me. Good financial control is key. Have some reserves for the expected unexpected maintenace. I was trying to share some knowledge in a positive way, but I may have missed the point. A second time... All feedback is greatly appreciated. Best regards, -a-
  9. Or half way to C ownership... David must be working tonight? Best regards, -a-
  10. What if... You buy the M20C and take multiple trips. Apply the 10 or $20k to the down payment. Repeat next year. Best regards, -a-
  11. Fear the paint issues....related to stripping. Best regards, -a-
  12. Cliffy has pointed out nicely that there is a science behind all of this. But don't expect to porpoise all the way down the runway, that would be too good... Three bounces usually ends up with a prop strike as each bounce gets worse than the first. Was there any consideration for Mooney specific training? Best regards, -a-
  13. Is this where the wealthy get wealthier? Or is that the next election? The stock markets rise, taxes get paid, and the deficit dwindles... The number of our children being injured in foreign wars is decreasing to small numbers... According to the raggy USAtoday. Price of gas in Oklahoma is at $2.00 per gallon. There is no draft. How bad is that? Who are we voting for for president? Or is it too soon to start that conversation?
  14. Sounds too good? Ask many questions. Take many notes. Get written quote with warranty. On the other hand, be prepared to brag... Take before and after pictures. Post during and after the process. Best regards, -a-
  15. For the record... The only engine 'failure' I experienced was a stuck/bent valve. It happened while climbing out. I didn't make any changes to throttle prior to the event. Hence, the suggestion to ask the current thoughts on that situation... Best regards, -a-
  16. (1) Ask your flight instructor about his stance on changing power settings again...? This is not Mooney specific.... It was thought that engine failures typically occur when making a change to MP after lift-off... Waiting to be at altitude where you can turn back to the airport and make a safe landing is a good idea. 1,000' AGL? (2) get a hold of the most recent POH for your C. You can write your own checklists using this as a resource. (3) even newer POHs won't cover modern theory of full power climbs to altitude. (4) climbs to altitude in a C are often selected for improved cooling. 120mph IAS is a number typically used for a combination of speed, both horizontal and vertical while maintaining Ok CHTs... (5) get a JPI if you don't have one. (6) get a FF monitor if you don't have one. (7) read as much as you can.... I am not a CFI, but I used to fly a C... Best regards, -a-
  17. Thoughts on loans... (1) What is a typical loan period people would use for a Mooney? (2) Re: Bonal's thought The difference (possibly) between financing a Mooney vs. the other things on your list... 10 years from now, the maintained Mooney maintains a fair amount of its value. (3) Try to reserve calling something 'dumb' for topics like flying in icing conditions during a thunderstorm... (4) When paying interest, most people would pay it off sooner at a lower rate, rather than later. (5) Using a 30 year mortgage to pay for a plane...that's a long term plan. (6) people are different, incomes, expenses and desires are different. Future income and future expenses will be different. There isn't a one size fits all theory on how to pay for flying... (7) my favorite method to pay for a plane, somebody defined about four years ago, was his investing plan... Sounded more like an investment scheme to me... Somebody probably called It dumb... I'm reviewing the three year chart of QQQ...while typing. See if you can find that thread. Seek professional advice on this...! If you can find this thread share it back with me, I can't find it. (8) another nice thing about going the home loan route, it can be paid back early without a penalty. Always read every line of the financial document to see these things are in there... My experience is neither financial or plane sales....I'm a PP... Best regards, -a-
  18. I clicked on the first link... Opened smoothly into my web browser. Then I read the piece by Mr. Belville. Wish I could have been there... Now I have to go back and cover the other issues regarding memory and brain cells.... Best regards, -a-
  19. Cabana has a good idea... "I knew a guy once, " who had to ask Mike the best way to get into the right seat of his J. A short video of the Top 10 things a new passenger would want to know..... Not for me, for my passengers...! Best regards, -a-
  20. Amazing how easy it is to recognize Dave! Why does it look like Mike is still in the arctic circle while Dave is working in NJ? What's the news on the timing issue? Best regards, -a-
  21. There must be a 'pro' category in the CB club... Young master Philip showed his pro documentation yesterday. As the Sabre mech must have also. That takes some dedication to the sport of being a CB! I mean this with the highest regard of mechanics. My apologies if I didn't type it correctly. Best regards, -a-
  22. F, Do you have a website for Wings? Or any other contact info? That's a nice piece of information. Best regards, -a-
  23. The banks I spoke with about financing my plane really wanted to help me out... They asked if it was going to be for a Lear, Gulfstream or Hawker... They didn't have Mooney on their list. The amount I wanted to borrow was less than their 1MM minimum... Bank of America (introduced by AOPA) at least spoke the language, but their interest rate was 6% or so... Try that route before moving on... After a year work on getting better financing. Refinancing the house gets better interest rates than financing a plane. You probably don't want to finance your plane using your house if there is a risk of losing the house. What interest rate did you get for financing your house...? Best regards, -a-
  24. Welcome aboard, Carlos. I went to the link in the OP, and saw Mike E.'s Pirep... Mr. Jaeger is well known in a positive way, prior to the interior panels too. Anyone with a desire to remove interior panels for maintenance will appreciate how these panels go together. There are many pieces that can be acquired for less than $100. It may take a couple of years to finish the project. Every annual would get a new piece or two... Something to consider when your interior is yellowed and broken... Best regards, -a-
