  1. Got pics of the air park? I’m always trying to promote this idea… one of these days, I’m going to be living within walking distance to my plane…. -a-
  2. Heat UV oxygen Three enemies of polymeric materials… hard to avoid O2, but… Saran wrap is a multi layered polymer film that has a layer that is mostly impenetrable to oxygen… Saran is designed to keep O2 away from your lunch meats… and works pretty well at preserving other things as well… A layer of EVOH is the O2 barrier in the center of the structure… pp thoughts only , not an organic chemist… Best regards, -a-
  3. Newer POHs contain more data… including stall speed charts that include various weights… Best glide speed is also a function of weight… If you study a newer POH with the added data charts… you might see a 10 Kt difference between heavy and light weights…. For the best logic in selecting the landing speed…. There is a Mooney CFII around here that publishes an excellent package of info simplified into a basic chart…. I keep that as a handy reference for what speed to fly on final… It is a real course on energy management, and safety management, when you have a 2k’ runway, surrounded by trees, and strong winds at altitude… and one windsock a half mile away…. +1 for the AOAi But where is the fun in that… it presents you with that how much excess energy am I carrying now, in a single needle, or colored light stack. No complex summations, or digging through a flight back for a chart… Be sure to know how your AOAi is calibrated… based on a single configuration, or two? PP thoughts only, not a CFI… Best regards, -a-
  4. 2amu per month… how much does a hangar home go for in FL? House the plane, live rent free…. Best regards, -a-
  5. The fun for these calculators… Is most often when trying to determine which Mooney you can afford, based on the budget number you have to work with… If I have 75amu to spend on a Mooney… do I look for one with two GTNs or an engine OH? then when your insurance is getting renewed…. Click through all of the boxes, add up the final score… update the value of the airplane to insure it properly… trying to use big data crunches, based on advertised values, sounds pretty challenging…. Even the known hardware costs, don’t cover installation cost. Jimmy used to print the basic calculator in the monthly MAPA magazine… There is another Mooney mag around here that may have a price calculator in a similar way….? Best regards, -a-
  6. Gabe, The big difference on the last two, where they use the longer shaft… you can see the number of sheets of aluminum they go through… The shorter camlocs go through two layers… the longer fasteners go through three… replacing cores is easy… replacing the holes is a bit more challenging… the cores have a tendency to escape every now and then… the holes have a tendency to wear…. The parts catalog… will list the part numbers and number of parts that get used…. But doesn't mention stainless steel, or where the different camlocs go… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
  7. The problem with buying a nice M20F… It becomes near impossible to NEED a plane upgrade between now and forever… even the Acclaim has four seats, and is only a small amount faster than the M20F… and won’t carry much more weight… it does carry a lot of volume though…. Acclaim’s turbos are nice, but the M20F has been turbo normalized a few times around here… I used planned obsolescence… we got the M20C when the kids were tiny. The tiny kids were sure to grow, and a decade later we were hunting for the next Mooney…. for proof… see doc John’s (nicest M20F ever) post above…. Best regards, -a-
  8. There was a brief moment in 2008 where press releases were being generated before getting tossed out… Mooney announced their partnership with RR…. RR500 TP (turbo prop) was the engine being considered… https://www.avweb.com/air-shows-events/mooney-rolls-royce-look-at-turbine-single/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolls-Royce_RR500 mid year, they still didn’t have a feel for how tough 2008 was really going to be… 500shp short term 380shp continuous how was the Maule T/O performance with the TP? longer or shorter than piston variety? If I got a turbine engine on my Mooney… I still want to be off the ground at the 1k’ mark… Best regards, -a-
  9. Champion spark plugs…again? Add that to the list. -a-
  10. Kind of like walking down a highway… or the edge of a highway… No cars on it now… but when they show up, they are moving 60’ per second… for anyone thinking they will hear it coming… not if they are landing… I do a lot of walking…. The ramp is as close as I want to be to moving aircraft…. people don’t know where to look for landing aircraft… and they are not familiar with how fast an airplane moves…. or they won’t know how agile a GA plane really is/isn’t on the ground…. put signs up so people can know… anyone walking down the middle of a runway must be il-informed… even abandoned runways get their fair share of planes doing low passes and and touch and gos because they can… approach people as if you are trying to be informative and helping them out… there is a good chance you are… pp thoughts only not a psychologist… best regards, -a- Echo always has good professional insight on safety issues..!
  11. Parker has quite a few years under his belt and is a Mooniac at his core. Very helpful supporting MSers with their insurance questions and needs. Best regards, -a-
  12. In the ideal Mooney world where nothing ever wears out, or misbehaves… circuit breakers only popped when needed… people didn’t use them as switches to cut the power off… in the real world… we want two ways to turn some things off…. AP servos especially. fortunately… the push button CBs can be exchanged for the desired type ‘relatively’ easily…. PP thoughts as usual… not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
  13. Voltages from TCs are incredibly tiny… 1) loose wires 2) broken wires 3) dirty connections 4) oxidized connections 5) worn parts 6) sensor not seated properly in the well It is important to have working from a paperwork perspective…. The ship’s CHT is a required primary instrument… unless you have an alternative certified primary instrument…. PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
  14. Electrical drawings for the Long Bodies are in the Maintenance manuals… These manuals are available from your favorite MSC… They are an electronic file… Worth having a copy… Best regards, -a-
  15. Hey DC! Sounds like they may be the push to reset type….? when they trip, they pop out about 1/4”…? PP guessing only, not an electrician… Best regards, -a-
  16. I like the Transition Training route… Expect about 10hrs with a Mooney specific flight instructor… (a lot depends on your insurer) Learn how to handle all the wackiness that is specific to Mooney airframes… with somebody that KNOWs. First year of insurance usually costs about 1k more than the second year… stay proficient after that… All airplanes are just different enough from each other…. Getting the transition training for the new 2U bird is worth it… The most recent Mooney accident, may make you wonder about the new owner’s level of transition training… New 2U machines can be dangerous solely because of all the new things going on…. Not recognizing things as they happen…. Transition training is used in the industrial machine industry as well… it’s not just a pilot thing… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… or a CFI. Best regards, -a-
  17. Just remember… Selling the Mooney doesn’t mean leaving MS… we have a few Piper turbine owners around here still…. i am a big fan of the Rocket Engineering birds… Missile, Rocket, Screamin’ Eagle, Standing Ovation, P46T…. Transition Training will be fun! Best regards, -a-
  18. Let’s let @canamex know you are asking… it’s a bit late right now, you might check back in the morning if you don’t hear anything…. Go Mooney! Best regards, -a-
  19. Interest rates are about maxed out… with the expectation of dropping three times this year… according to the federal reserve… financial coup… 1) buy it into the weakened price caused by higher interest rates… 2) refinance it after the rates drop… PP thoughts only, not a financial guru… or seer of any kind… Go Mooney! Best regards, -a- Update… Auction ended, reserve not met… last bid appears to be 130K… But, it did get a lot of clicks and eyeballs….
  20. +1 yea! and a question… If the air intake on an Ovation was made of a carbon fiber part…. How many pounds could we save, compared to the original aluminum part? There are a few Mooneys with the IO550 that are just a bit nose heavy… by a couple of pounds. Nice work William! Best regards, -a-
  21. Fiki, turbo, Long Body, Mooney, that looks brand new…. I like the ice light! Go Mooney! what’s next… turbine six seater, carbon cub on floats, or a Bell Jet Ranger….? Best regards, -a-
  22. Long live Trek! He always has the answers… The hard part, you had to know how to find him…. Best regards, -a-
  23. I can only offer confusion…. I have the O, it was born with a NA IO550g, standard with 280hp, limited by 2500rpm… At OH time, it was upgraded to 310hp, it got a prop swap, from McCauley to Hartzell TopProp, and is allowed to run 2700 rpm… The TopProp weighs about 15Lbs more than Mac, and the N cylinders save about two pounds each… Keeping the WnB details as close as possible, before and after the swap…. I went with the N cylinders… Over the years… a few of the N cylinders in the field, have developed cracks near the exhaust valve in a thin part of the casting…. there is probably a change in that area of the cylinder to eliminate that cracking issue…? I have not experienced any cylinder cracks yet…. CHTs in the O, are tightly controlled… I don’t usually fly above 12.5k’… There are a lot of N engines in the cirri… for comparison… I also briefly considered the lighter weight MT four blade, but it was not fully STC’d at the time…. We had at least one Acclaim around here that was running 310hp flying out west around CO… The Acclaim was used to commute between CA and CO… Climbing with 310hp all the way to the FLs would surely be nice… 2kfpm Go Mooney! Best regards, -a-
  24. I believe my Insight Strike finder in the O was installed at the factory when new… A call to the factory may give some…. Insight… to what they used to make it a legal install… PP thinking out loud… Best regards, -a-
