  1. Thanks to Hank for the awesome summary! I did get to speak with Carl Sharon from Houston Tank Sealing at the Mooney Summit... One option that didn’t get mentioned... Is the person in need a member of the eternal CB club...? Sometimes life puts you in the CB club for an extended period of time... There is one thread around here that demonstrates how to strip and reseal your own... If roll your own makes sense... find Alex’s thread... The challenge with the mobile idea... doing it right may take a second trip... The big shops warranty the work and offer to fix the leak by bringing it back... and / or will go to the plane to do the work... (or something similar to that) I had DMax reseal the top access panels as part of the PPI a decade ago... the patch has worked well for a decade... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
  2. Better chance of gin-influencing the passenger... -a-
  3. Was trim and flaps left out of the preliminary report for a reason? This is a common error that could occur... How the pilot responds to such a challenge may have erased the evidence... The eye-witness described the take-off... that gives a hint to what to look for... But still only an eye-witness... Best regards, -a-
  4. So PJ... You have heard from pro-pilot... You have heard from pro-weather guy... You have heard from a bunch of PPs with IRs... You got some info regarding math and math modeling from a pro-math guy... Your homework, if you so wish, is take in as much as you can... review the apps the other people are using... One of the best for flying in IMC is the one Scott D. has... Do whatever it takes to stay out of thunderstorms and icing... There are a few threads for each of the recommendations, use the search to find them... For fun... find the thread discussing supper cooled water droplets and how fast ice builds up... pics are included. Does it get any better than this?!?!?! Go MS! PP thoughts only... not a weather guy, math guy, pro pilot guy, I didn’t even stay in a holiday in this year... Best regards, -a-
  5. Often owners will move the machine... at buyers expense... If needed, an MSC can pick up the plane and have it delivered... Things get expensive quickly to pay two people to fly two planes around... You want a good plane so it passes the PPI to take on this extra financial burden... Expect all costs to be bourn by the buyer... so keep asking all the questions... Best regards, -a-
  6. RS, You are going to find out buying a plane is more of a partnership... The buyer and seller need to work out many details... Insurance often drives The Who can do what... It isn’t a good idea to hammer down a low price... then wonder how to get the PPI executed... When you have done this a few times it is much easier... some people get to the level of buying top quality machines from known people and absorb the cost of added risk... no PPI (not recommended, unless you can afford huge expenses that can be hiding to the seller...) Start with asking the seller to see log book copies... determine who has been doing the maintenance... go to the next good Mooney resource nearby... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic or sales guy... Best regards, -a-
  7. Great follow-up, Peter! Best regards, -a-
  8. One of these days the other half of the world is going to be here... Political Correctness will become WW-PC... World Wide... We can trade Pork and grains for IP and airplane parts... +1 on Brad’s forward thinking thought process... Forever planes are going to need parts for a really long time... Best regards, -a-
  9. Focus on one step at a time... What we are going to do first? Then... Invite Lasar, A mechanic from TX, and Sabremech to the conversation if their input would be helpful... That would probably come with Step two... how we are going to do it... While step zero is to determine how long the drought is going to last... what’s in the current inventory... how do we access it? Step four TQM... parts aren’t just made to any spec. There is a bit of high tech total quality management involved with traceability... until you really have to go without the TQM to just get parts... This week is going to be interesting in terms of China and the US getting together on Phase One... of the trade deal... An interest cross-road of World politics... and MooneySpace... Could the trade agreement affect freeing up cash for the Mooney factory? Best regards, -a-
  10. Great follow-up, Brice. Thanks for sharing the details... Keep an eye on CHTs if they are hotter than normal... timing may have advanced... If colder... timing may have decreased closer to a TDC... Not sure if only 2° would make the difference that you initially saw... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
  11. I was just looking at old VFR nav charts of NY/NJ... circa 60s and 70s... They would show the name of a radio station and its frequency as if it would be normal to use for VFR navigation... You can use the GPS to navigate to the radio tower... but you can’t get the score of the Sox/Yanks game... Best regards, -a-
  12. @David Lloyd, See the invite from our Pasture pilot above... Spreading the word would be good... + it will make you feel better too... Houses can be built anywhere and everywhere... airports, not so much... Best regards, -a-
  13. See what is in the store... Nose steering parts... @Alan Fox @acpartswhse @SheryLoewen -a-
  14. NJ is experiencing temps in the 50°F range... with thunderstorms in the forecast... Good luck to the guys in the North. Super cooled water only takes fractions of a second to get crystal initiation and lots of thick ice forms quickly... Have a plan, know where to go to escape... execute the plan... do not wait... Great pics, Austin! Thanks for sharing the details... And no... propellers and that much ice is bad... the airframe gaining weight is a bad WnB problem... the wings changing shape is a problem... Then there is the un-even shedding of ice... also bad... Mooneys and this much ice would be extremely bad... It really is important to know the weather before flying. Especially, downwind of large bodies of water...that are not frozen over yet... Looks like the moisture is coming all the way up from the Gulf of Mexico then running into cold air in Canada... Call that the perfect Ice storm... PP thoughts only, not a weatherman... Best regards, -a-
  15. House keeping for @gwcolwell... there is an edit button up by the title that is available to you as the writer of the title... Add another 0 for your G1000... +1 on contacting Paul aka PMax around here... Best regards, -a-
  16. Great pirep, Chase! Haven’t heard from you in a while... You must be busy! Best regards, -a-
  17. Great pirep, Steingar! The sun is shining... Best regards, -a-
  18. Welcome aboard Mark... What is Kearsch? And why is your screen name Century II B? You can always start over, or change what you wrote, if you like... Have you used the search function to look this up at all? Stand by to see what answers may be coming your way... we have a few AP knowledgeable people around here... they just might not know what you are looking for without opening the thread... ya know? Best regards, -a-
  19. Way to go INA! It should be safe to go back in the water... discussing OPs... L v. R Both are acceptable... they get used for different reasons... and different costs... Learn as much as you can... Just learn it is hard to write LOPs... without writing LOP ops.... that would be redundant... ! I enjoy using LOP in Cruise below 65%bhp... burns more efficiently, lower temps, cleaner oil... I use ROP for the climb... leaning using the blue box method... adjusting mixture to stay in the box as I climb... When leaning, I use primarily FF to get in the range... and complete the effort using the JPI... takes some data gathering at first... As Bob mentioned there are times to lean roughly... the ships gauge can work here as well... the modern engine monitor shows all the EGTs at once... pick the one that goes past peak last...to watch... Learn to download data, post on the savvy site, and we can discuss the details... It’s a bit of a science if you like... or it can be pretty rough and still be effective... Read up on GAMI spreads. Determine what yours is. My Gami spread was a 0.1... at low altitudes, it was possible to lean to about 90°F LOP... (deep LOP) at higher altitudes, it was possible to lean to about 50°F LOP... (moderate LOP) Going LOP at altitudes above 8k’, bhp is <65%bhp, outside the red box, doesn’t gain very much... above 8k’, you can choose running right at peak, or slightly LOP, to ensure burning all the fuel to make power... Flying deep LOP compresses lots of air that doesn’t get used... if CHTs are in control, compressing excess air doesn’t do very much for your efficiency... The previous owner of my plane probably spent a lot of dough getting this low Gami spread... my first attempt to see the Gami spread.... I leaned and leaned waiting for roughness that never occurred.... I leaned slowly until the engine got quiet... then I leaned to have the power return... Put a plan together, execute the plan... write down questions... take notes... download data... upload data... share your data... Start with... Verify the rate of data collection... 1 point every second is the best... 6 seconds is the worst... Learn about doing run-ups and data collecting at the same time... Read up on balancing your fuel injectors... a quick test your mechanic can help you with... baby food jar test... Expect to see things that you didn’t know about your engine... Not everybody has to go this deep into the technology of flying.... but it is really cool to learn more about how these things work. This way you can personalize the experience to match your needs... My desire was to save needing a top OH before TBO... LOP works pretty good for this economic discussion... For more fun... get everything balanced to a tight Gami spread... Collect your data until you are comfortable... Set your MP to WOT... Adjust mixture as desired, your choice... Flaming dragon mode, or LOP... Descend intelligently, keeping an eye on Vne and Vno (based on weight, and atmospheric conditions) You can be LOP from the TOC back to the TPA... then, GUMPs GUMPs.... Remember... doing a GA while LOP because you didn’t use a check list... is bad... bad form, bad for the engine, or it may just quit... Are you sure you want to discuss LOP? Lets talk best power... for T/O at higher altitudes... same as the blue box technique in the climb.... Having an engine monitor is near magical for the plane owner... PP thoughts only, not a ,enhancing or CFI... Let me know if I missed anything, or got something backwards... If this is TMI, remember... you started it, Turbo LOPs... that’s a more fun discussion... make sure to invite all the people that have shared their logic in the past... Turbo LOPs with a Bravo... even more challenging details... Best regards, -a-
  20. Welcome aboard phillip_g. How many PPIs did you have done there? Did you buy the Mooney when you were done? Any other details you can share? Just trying to help fill in some needed detail for the OP. I usually only give people a hard time if their names are Mikey or Alan... And they have to be from NJ... Best regards, -a-
  21. We have a few magazine writers around here as well... Best regards, -a-
  22. Veronica must be an amazing person to work with. So if anyone is keeping score... She is... 1) Running a high tech, Worldwide, aviation company... check. 2) Using capitalism in China... check. 3) Meeting promises of building Mooneys in Kerrville, not taking everything to China... check. 4) Have you seen any other Women doing this while still in China? 5) So if anyone is going to get the lights back on in Kerrville... it will probably start from the top. 6) Veronica has been a great leader. 7) The Ultras are spectacular next generation versions of the beloved O and Acclaim. Plenty of room for improvement and next gen ideas... seems this work is never done... 8) When you talk to new owners about their Mooneys... (I only spoke with one...) I must not be very outgoing... It is a traveling machine that enables people to go where they want, when they want, many states away... that was a business owner... buying another business machine... He was so happy with his decision, the enjoyment was infectious... 9) His plane was on display... 10) Don’t forget the team... A leader is only as good as their team... if you’re the leader... put in the extra effort to select a good team... Part of that team is the Transition Trainers, a few were at KOSH too... I got to spend some time with some awesome MSers on that part of the team as well... Mike and Dan got to listen to me asking lots of questions... 11) then there is this part... Making private aviation available in China... the place that doesn’t have enough GA airports... private aviation in a communist country...? Somebody believes that This is possible... Imagine for a moment... the freer flow of ideas, AND people... that has worked pretty well for humanity in other places... PP thoughts from the outside only, not a Mooney sales guy, yet... Best regards, -a-
  23. Welcome aboard, original. I can let @Hockeybabe39 know you stopped by... Her plane for sale is really nice. (As seen in the ad...) Best regards, -a-
  24. Well written story/ life history/ call to arms David! Please share this post with our friends at AOPA... @mooneygirl might be able to assist... There is always some sunshine after the storm... I hope. We need more Flying Octogenarians on MS... so it isn’t time to give up the long term aircraft goals yet... Your memory is fantastic! I can’t remember where I was last week. Forever planes are often built by people in their 70s... Thanks for sharing the details! Best regards, -a-
  25. Really interesting pics! how the ice decides to pile up the way it does... Not affected by the stall strips... but the landing/taxi lights change things locally... Thanks for sharing the pics, and the rest of the details. Add that to Ron and Skips aerodynamic discussion... Best regards, -a-
