  1. some PP thoughts from a couple of days ago... 1) The M20 and M20A were built using nature’s composite materials... 2) Composite materials can be made pretty flexible... ever see a pole vaulter flex the composite pole? 3) Not sure how the materials are selected... but flexural strength is better than having things snap in two... Then some from today... 4) Each guest is going to have different fears than the next... 5) The guests that come on my plane usually are interested in their first flight in a small plane... 6) They can’t tell the difference between GA and a 737... 7) Most often, they think the word stall has something to do with the engine stopping... 8) Selling airplanes to the masses is a tough job to overcome some of the most basic fears... 9) Cirrus took an interesting approach and put a plane in the middle of a state fair in Topsfield, Ma... 10) Lots of people talking aviation, possibly dispelling fears, if not... talking parachutes... Qualifying customers is a salesman’s job.... part of the homework... Best regards, -a-
  2. So my friend that hangs out at the airport all day... approached me and asked if I was ADSB compliant yet? Because he saw me land, and was not getting my ADSB data on his idevice.... This is at An uncontrolled field, class G all around.... My wishful thinking that I may someday get a rebate has come unceremoniously to completion... Time to turn the ADSB system on.... PP thoughts only, not an ADSB expert... Best regards, -a-
  3. Way to get started, Dzel! Welcome aboard. The Mooney world is awesome. Best regards, -a-
  4. Find the threads... monitoring the RH inside the engine.... yes some MSer went the distance... leaving the heat on unmonitored can be counterproductive... heating the engine and oil to 40°F has some benefits to lubrication and fuel evaporation getting the engine started... Venting the moisture out of the engine is important... leaving it in and keeping it warm... is bad... WiFi is spreading everywhere... but only covers the half where my hangar isn’t... Pay attention to how much load you plug into the switch... The early cell switches were hand made and didn’t get designed to any particular standard... plugging in an engine heater and cabin heater... shouldn’t light the plane on fire... PP thoughts only, not an electrical engineer... Best regards, -a-
  5. Up to a few weeks ago... There were a few left that would get recycled on Wednesday afternoons at exactly noon... Trying to get the system to work was an effort in futility... Seeing if you could answer the questions properly faster than the rebates ran out.... Let me know if anyone sees any open up on Wednesday.... Best regards, -a-
  6. 1) Discussing avionics is Mooney enough... 2) There is probably a better place for the discussion... 3) A 430W is a relatively modern navigator... it has WAAS approach capability... nothing more modern than that. 4) WAAS came after the Bravos and Os first rolled out.... Carry on... Best regards, -a-
  7. Dev is based at NE Philly... Alan is based at KVAY south Jersey... not too far away by Mooney... Best regards, -a-
  8. Sweet... No bumps above the clouds... Great place to be, in a Mooney... Thanks for sharing the vid. Best regards, -a-
  9. I would really like the improved access to the engine... The attitude has much to do with flight characteristics for T/O and landing... making changes there would make the landings get even more sportier... Longer legs would add the cost of additional weight... if going there... make them oleo struts.... that really adsorb some impact... The things that got removed are generically called 1/4 turn fasteners... not too hard to undo... but adding a hinge would be nice, and something to hold the lid up... I like looking for things that are loose, or leaking, before committing to flight... Do people really not like the way it sits on the ground... or is it so squatty... they have to sit Corvette style on the floor...? I was simply attracted to the Mooney for its performance... Speed, distance, efficiency, safety.... it really didn’t matter what it looked like... Selecting a Mooney from a chart was really easy... As long as the engine is running... The parachute doesn’t have very much attraction... Having my only engine problem on T/O... the parachute wouldn’t have solved that... Reading ‘Zefs’ input on safety back before parachutes is interesting... strength of the wing, and strength of the roll cage... Since, I’m planning on the success of the return of Mooney... Make mine a turbine, with pressurization... Or do I have to start building a Lanceair....? Best regards, -a-
  10. That’s pretty creative, Cargil... Some things got stretched... Some got squeezed... But nothing got out of round... How many baggage doors do we want/need? Put mine next to the pilot’s door... Why did we keep the fixed step? Store that away properly... Would the turbine fit under cowl? How about Clarence’s HO eight? (Horizontally opposed) Looks like the cowl got shorter... the O has room for six, then a bunch of space behind it... How far back would my seat have to recline for me to fit inside? Would I be able to see over the cowl? Is that a short rudder, with a fixed tail cone? How Long does it take modify the drawing so seamlessly? What is the gray antenna on the bottom? Best regards, -a-
  11. So... Mag check order... Right, Left, Both... Cyl #1 misbehaves the most on the Left Mag...(?) We could check the drawing of mags and plugs to see which plug is turned off and which one seems to be malfunctioning.... More PP thoughts... Best regards, -a-
  12. lots o things to think about, while waiting... 1) If the condenser is showing some weakness or larger drain of its charge.... Does slowing the number of sparks/minute down allow the mag to run better..? (Lower rpm) (better charge in the capacitor) 2) The capacitor is one of those wear parts that gets changed out during a mag OH...(?). Their job is to store large charges of electricity... so when they fail... it can be pretty destructive to the internal construction of the capacitor itself... 3) The capacitor is typically like a large piece of aluminum foil.... collecting charge (electrons) on its surface.... to roll it up to fit inside a can, it requires a layer of insulation like a plastic film the same size as the aluminum foil... 4) If a part of the insulating layer wears/fails... the charge collector can ground on itself... changing its effective surface area....minimizing the amount of charge it can hold... 5) Sounds like the capacitor experienced a slight failure, got weaker, but still kinda worked for a while... 6) There is one oddity in the EGT graph... each time something fails to operate.... the EGT spikes downwards... this is not what is expected of a two mag system running on one may... 7) Running on one mag, unburned fuel goes into the exhaust system while continuing to burn...giving off its last release of energy... 8) hence the higher EGTs we see on the monitor, when clicking to the single mags... 9) along way to go... to say don’t spend too much time looking at the mag and ignoring everything else... 10) something seems to have changed on cylinder one, stronger than what is happening on the other three... 11) or what ever happened to the mag is affecting cylinder one more strongly? 12) I grabbed a close-up of the run-up of the flight Dev shared... note where I left the data mark... cyl #1 looks like it's slightly misbehaving up to this point... But really goes its own way after this point... have a look... 13) I am baffled by the periodic downward spikes in the EGT... and how Cyl#1 stands out more than the rest... 14) The second mag peak, is clearly showing that mag misbehaving... most on cylinder #1... 15) Try this PP logic... If the top plug is getting turned off going single mag... and the bottom plug is really dirty... so much unburned fuel is going to the exhaust... it is cool... explaining the downward spike... 16) What plugs are in there? putting this all together... 17) A weak mag may not be able to generate a strong spark... a high resistance plug may be showing the affects of the weak mag first...(?) 18) great data collection Dev!, well shared... To be Extra Clear... these are only thoughts of a PP, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
  13. As a pilot, do whatever it takes to not make the cover of USAToday.... -a- article from USA TODAY: NTSB: Nine people killed, three injured in South Dakota plane crash https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/11/30/plane-crash-south-dakota-kills-nine-people-ntsb-says/4343688002/
  14. +1 Skips logic.. if running poorly at low power... and improves at high power... Expect to find a small air leak into the intake system... The small leak greatly affects the low power air/fuel mixture... The same small leak hardly shows up in the high power air/fuel mixture... Since leaks have a tendency to become unstable and grow... it is not something to become comfortable with and ignore... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
  15. Seeing if @cb310 is still around... Last login was back a few months... Best regards, -a-
  16. Lesson regarding Necro posts... It helps to see if the person is still visiting MS... Unfortunately, 02V hasn’t signed in, in over a year... If you check the FAA registration, you might learn more about the actual plane ownership chain. Best regards, -a-
  17. Adjustable height seats are in short supply... Always commanding an unfavored price... Want to check with the guys who sell the used Mooney equipment? need the list of references...? Best regards, -a-
  18. You are working with a mechanic right? Ask him how to accomplish that... Many Mooney panels did things that didn’t pan out over time... As if the angled panel did something that moving your head didn’t... Most long Body panels are the same width... most are flat the whole way... Often somebody will angle the mount of a panel mounted device to add the angle... Some of the short bodies still have their horizontal fold... so the bottom of the panel points up towards the pilot’s eyes... nice, but not very helpful for gyros... PP thoughts only Best regards, -a-
  19. Welcome aboard CW... Want to discuss financing? Money hasn’t been this cheap for a long time... and may not stay this cheap for a long time... Best regards, -a-
  20. Gents, As a reminder... If you have a web presence... Add your website to your signature line... It will help with the memory challenged individual.... (that would be me) You can find the signature line in the avatar editing area... Best regards, -a-
  21. Horizontal iPad makes for better inflight entertainment... Not sure if there is any value added to the angled CB panel... I usually use my sense of feel to see what is happening/popped out over there... You have the great opportunity to change all the CB switches to something new and different... Somebody posted the use of some really nice switches that were modern and lighted... and the ordinary CBs were mounted in the other part of the panel... CB switches were important around the mid 50s for some reason... the current manufacturer has made them ridiculously expensive, without adding any value... PP thoughts only, not often an iPad movie watcher... Best regards, -a-
  22. What changed your that you are logging in under a similar yet different name/ID? As for water getting to the carb... it has to get past the fuel caps as well... give a good look to what can allow water to enter the tanks... Two Orings per cap... Best regards, -a-
  23. There is a thread or two dedicated to the cup holders... Getting a new one from Mooney is probably priced in AMUs as is tradition... Many have gone the CB route to stick a couple on the nose wheel console... Best regards, -a-
