    I had an exhaust riser break in flight which would be much like if this clamp came apart and it was on #4 by coincidence.  The only thing that happened was a rhythmic thumping noise that changed with a change in power (the exhaust actually exiting into the engine compartment instead of out the exhaust pipe) and it going almost silent when the power was brought to idle.  Also, the EGT's on #4 went cold because most of the exhaust was venting out by the engine and not out the actually pipe where the probe is.  But the airplane flew just fine and nothing catastrophic happened other than the bill I got to fix it. :)

    I know how you feel.  This was just part of my pile when I re-did my panel.  They found wires leading no-where.  Some were live.  It was just a mess.

I remember as a kid going flying with my Dad in 1980 (I was 11 years old) when he first got his license.  The Cherokee's he trained in had no intercom.  No headsets.  A single microphone and the overhead speaker.  Even when he got his multi in a Seminole there were no headsets and no intercom. But back then there was a lot less communication with ATC as I recall.  When he bought his first airplane which was a Baron, the pilot and co-pilot had headsets but nothing for the passengers.  I remember having to yell quite a bit to be heard.  When he moved up to the Cessna 340 there were headsets for every seat.

I also usually keep Settings>Cellular Data off unless I have a reason to use the cell connection to download something.  If you leave it on and the iPad makes its own choice, you can wind up downloading too much data and blow through your monthly account limit. That would also prevent your iPad from using the cell connection to autodownload an OS update. Don’t know the answer for sure, I just know I don’t have the problem on my iPad.

    All of those switches are in the off position.  I double checked.  It is just a mystery I guess.

    That is quite possible since it has been asking me that for days and I kept putting it off.  But the options were update now or update later.  There was no do not update option.  So even though I had the auto updates slider in the off position it still thought by me saying update later that I eventually wanted it to update.  That makes sense.  Thanks,

    Things have gotten Uber complex over the years... not everything works perfectly with the updates...

    Internet speeds are way up lately... so updating on demand seems pretty acceptable...

    It is pretty easy to check if you have the automatic update turned on... Settings, update... slide button...

    The I-devices are nearing the ability to be used as medical devices... something that you wouldn't want to update automatically... unknowingly...

    If it doesn’t work as expected... send a message back to Apple... they need to know...

    I haven’t sent a message to Apple yet... not even sure where to start...

    Thanks.  The slide button to automatic updates is turned off yet it still updated on its own.  I have a message on the Apple Forum Community right now but no one has responded.  It is really not that big of a deal other than I have an issue with computer devices taking on a sort of AI and doing things when I have clearly stated I do not want them to be done.  Apple seems to be the main offender.  They feel they know what is right for you and your device and do it without asking.  My android phone is now getting to be that way with Google. :(

Congrats on the posting milestone.  I met Anthony at Oshkosh this year.  I am a relatively unknown in the world of Mooney.  I have owned mine for 12 years and I mainly lurk on these forums gathering as much knowledge as I can from folks a whole lot smarter about Mooneys than myself.  This being said, at Oshkosh, Anthony could have chosen any of the many well known Mooney folks to sit with but he sat with me and gave some excellent advice to my nephew who was with me who wants to be a professional pilot.  So I would like to say that Anthony is a true class act as has been mentioned and I enjoyed chatting with him at Oshkosh.  Here's to another 25K!!!

  8. Thanks for the information.  I did not get that message because my I-pad updated before they were done testing so no reason to send me the message. :)

    I normally am not concerned because Garmin has never had a problem with any of the I-pad updates but recently Jeppesen's Mobile Flite Deck was not compatible with the previous update.

So, I am calling on any ipad savvy folks.  I have an Ipad Pro 10.5 inch wifi + Cellular.  I use Garmin Pilot.  I usually wait to update to the new ios until ipad pilot news green light program says that everything checks out okay with Garmin Pilot and that it works okay with the new operating system.

    My I-pad decided to update to 13.1.3 on its own last night in the middle of the night without asking if it was okay.  I have automatic updates turned off yet it still went and updated the ios.  Garmin has not finished doing their testing so I was going to wait but too late thanks to Apple thinking it knows what is good for me without asking.  Anyone have any ideas as to why it would do this?  Did I miss a switch or something to turn off?  I have read through some forums about this and some say just to put it in airplane mode at night.  But if I turn off automatic updates on the ipad in the settings area I really should not have to do this as well.  I am just curious if I am missing something.  I know it was asking me on a daily basis if I wanted to do the update and I kept saying no so maybe it just got frustrated and took it upon itself to do what it felt was good for me. :)

  10. I was unaware until a recent article from AOPA mentioned that the Redbird Skyport at San Marcos, Texas closed its doors in September.  The simulator side of the business will continue apparently but the FBO closed its doors.  It was a really nice FBO with good service and friendly people.

    The owner wrote quite an article about FBO's in general and I thought I would share it with those that did not see it.

Not to hijack this thread but Phillips now has their Victory AW 20W/50 which has the Lycoming Additive in it.  Using this you would not have to use Camguard but along the same lines as Camguard, does it do any good?  Is it worth the extra cost.  Cam guard is quite expensive.  I agree that flying regularly is the best antidote for corrosion but there are times when I have a longer than normal hiatus from the airplane even though I usually fly about 150 hours a year.  So is the Lycoming additive worth it or even necessary?  

    And without concrete scientific proof that these additives work as they are intended then it is anecdotal and based on more of it makes me feel good more than anything else.

    Oh, by the way, I do use Camguard. :)

For those who may not be aware, and I am sure most are, most of what Mike Busch and others talk about in engine management and leaning comes from the engine management seminars with Advanced pilot Seminars in Ada, Oklahoma (www.advancedpilot.com).  I have done their online course and it was great.  I know that the in person course is even better but I have not been.  I don't really have the need to go since I have an O-360-A1D and it won't even get close to LOP.  I have had intakes checked for leaks, I try to add carb heat and crack the throttle, etc... all the tricks they talk about it and no soap.  When I do get everything running LOP according to my engine monitor, the engine is so rough that it feels like it could quit at any moment. :)

    Dental curing lights are no longer UV lights.  They were originally UV lights when first introduced back in the 1960's but have since been replaced by LED or halogen lights emitting a slightly longer wavelength of visible light.  They are mainly LED lights now. The shorter UV wavelength of light did not penetrate the composite deeply enough to provide an adequate cure.  So a little longer wavelength is used emitted by either LED or halogen bulbs.  We use an orange type protective device for our eyes because the light is extremely bright and intense and you would be seeing a big blue spot in your vision for hours if you look at one and possibly getting some eye damage as well.  

    You are correct that it is a chemical reaction initiated by light energy.  However, the composite, even if left out on a counter, will harden (cure) with regular room light although it would take much longer.  I have a very bright dental light that I wear that is connected to my loupes and I have to put an orange cover over it to prevent it from curing the composite while I am actually placing it in the tooth.  It would cure with this white light in a matter of less than a minute or two before I have time to manipulate it and sculpt it unless I have the orange blocker in front of it. 

    Probably too much information.  I could have left it with "heck no we don't use UV anymore" :)

    The lower right engine mount was cracked all the way through.  When the engine would start and the torque would rotate engine it would sound like backfire noise but it was actually the engine mount hitting metal to metal.  So the fix was a newer style engine mount with welded  gussets .

    I borrowed a friends hangar and took engine off and replaced engine mount with the newer style one.  Took me a month to do during spare time.  Glad to have that job over with.

    My plane is sitting in the shop right now for the same problem.  Although I did not hear any noise or experience any issues other than multiple exhaust leaks over the last year.  Thanks to advice from this group I had my mechanic check for anything that could cause vibration that would cause the exhaust leaks and turns out my lower right engine mount was broken all the way through.  Then, once again thanks to this group, SBM20-175-1 and SBM20-192A-1 and AD 75-09-08 were pointed out to me. They address this very issue of the lower right engine mount breaking.  I looked at my logs and the AD had been complied with every year.  But I have now an engine mount with the gussets already in place so the AD will be removed.

    Good that you were able to find this out.  Not so good you had to spend 2 grand to trouble shoot it.

  15. I second those that say carry a second card.  American Express saved me from being stuck away from home at midnight with no one around.  MC declined....Discover declined....AMEX no problem.

    One thing that I do is with my AA advantage MC, I can tell them all the states and or cities I will be in when I am traveling.  So if I know my flight plan and where I will be stopping for fuel (just the State) I will tell them online before my trip.  I no longer have anything declined.  Funny thing....they always put a fraud alert on my Sporty’s purchases.:)<_<

    I have a 1963 C model.  Flying home from a long cross country one afternoon, I was about 5 minutes from my home field when I got an awful fuel smell in the cabin.  Just all of a sudden without warning.  After landing, it turns out there was a metal fuel line coming through the firewall near the pilot rudder pedals.  It passed through the firewall and over the years I guess the grommet that protected the metal line from the firewall wore out and metal was rubbing on metal.  It put a very fine slice in the metal fuel line and eventually failed spraying fuel into the cockpit  but mostly back out the hole down the firewall on the engine side.  They replaced this line with a new one and all was well.  I have since installed an EDM 900 so hopefully all of that is out of the cockpit now.

    The cabin interior width of a Mooney is actually a little wider than a Bonanza.  The reason it feels cramped is that the headroom is less.  The cabin height of a Mooney is much less than that of a Bonanza which gives the illusion that it can be cramped when its width is quite nice compared to some other single engine piston airplanes.  You sit more reclined in a Mooney compared to more upright in a Bonanza or Cessna products.  I am 6'1" and weight 260.  I feel quite comfortable in my C model.  I fly with a friend who also has a C model and before that an A model and he is taller than I am and we fit together in the C model just fine without even rubbing elbows. :)

It might be regional...who knows.  I did mine last year with a shop on my field.  Got right in. The Garmin G5 and the GTX 345 were back ordered though and this was last year.  I imagine it has just gotten worse as the deadline approaches.  With that being said, I am not sure I would have stayed on a waiting list that long.  I think I would have shopped elsewhere.  But good luck and I hope you get it done soon to not be grounded for too long.

    This is one thing the FAA gave a very long time for compliance.  I understand that most were waiting for options to come out.  Extending the deadline may just extend the procrastination.

    With the original mechanic the work was completed and annual signed off. I approved around $6k in work and bill came to over $8k with no additional approval from me or alert that jobs were taking longer than expected.  Additionally, some work that I specifically declined was nonetheless performed because the mechanic considered it airworthy issues, basically taking away my opportunity to use a different mechanic on the field or getting a ferry permit.

    From what you have described here, I think you were wise to find another mechanic for next time.  I do what others have said and only approve the annual inspection part of it and any squawks that need to be repaired are discussed with me prior to the repair for me to authorize it to be done.  I have a great relationship with the folks that work on my airplane and this is how they work, not just me expecting it.  It is their standard of business and I appreciate it.  Yes it can make it tedious especially if they are ready to do something and they cannot get a hold of you to authorize the work.  But in the end it makes for a happy customer and hopefully a happy mechanic that welcomes your repeat business.

    For instance, my plane is currently in the shop for removal of cylinder #3 and either overhaul or replacement of this cylinder.  I also have a broken engine mount.  Other than cowl removal, not a wrench was turned until I approved this work.  Even though they new damn well that the cylinder work was needed and of course the engine mount would have to come off to be either repaired or replaced and the airplane was not going to fly again without this being done.  But they still took the time to contact me prior to the work.  And they have kept me in the loop ever since.  The same shop did my avionics for the ADS-B and my new panel.  They kept me in the loop with every step and the final cost was very close to what I was expecting and no surprises at all.

Someone had hooked it up to the little vent under the prop which is supposed to go to the generator and instead had it going to the outlet for the carb heat bypass valve.

    When I have had to use shops not completely familiar with Mooney, they seem to do this.  In fact they will go out of their way to re-route that tubing into the carb heat outlet.  Tough to force the air forward when cold ram air is trying to come in.  They see a hole and figure something must attach to it.  Something does but not that hose.
