  1. Okay, sounds good what about a teardown in general, as per the SB? Seems like insurance would cover it,although not sure if there are worse ramifications for going that route since it would be my first claim/experience.. Or.. Should I check the propeller if it's within limits for O/H and be happy with the AD and replace the bolt and lockplate on the crankshaft and call it a day
  2. Not sure how much it dug into the ground or suddenly stopped, because I didnt even realize it had happened until a week later doing a pre-taxi inspection. need to look into it, I already called the insurance to make the claim as I was on edge about damage to the crank.. not sure if its the best idea from your first reaction.. I have Avemco and it will be my first claim/incident. I wonder if I should back out of it, or if its too late at this point.. good to know, I did hear it makes more prop noise and not enough evidence if it makes better performance, other than maybe it looking cooler and more sophisticated I will make sure to take more detailed photos for next time.. suggestions would be to check for flatness and getting better angles?
  3. This is an EPIC AND CLEAR description of what applies to ground strikes. Thank you for this Clarence Well this may be a good opportunity to do these upgrades as spoken very nicely above! I have just joined the prop strike club under 100 hrs TT and below 30hrs in my first Mooney. Seems like it happened turning off the taxi way at LAL too soon at night and falling onto grass side and skimming some off the prop. Any advice for the whole procedure..? maybe it would be a good time to upgrade to 3 blade prop.. Does the prop need to be replaced or overhauled? Also, engine is about 500 TT and recently completed a top overhaul on jugs after splitting the case for a IRAN about 30 hours ago for reference.. prop was also freshly overhauled at the same time
  4. For the ram mount, there is for cessna/piper, beechcraft,or pilatus yoke. Which yoke is most similar to m20e yoke?
  5. Awesome! just PM'ed him. Lets see, specifically it was at Leeward Air Ranch. Thanks for considering me!
  6. He does have jacks available for the gear swing, so lets see how that goes on the pre buy July 5-6th ??? Im an A&P and I believe you as the IA is the only one allowed to get the ferry permit unless I missed something... Yea thats what I've heard as well, even someone recommended pulling a cylinder to confirm the status of the camshaft corrosion. Not sure how I can arrange that for the PPI.. Good to know.. but too late as I already signed for the Purchase Agreement and am in until the PPI, then I have the real choice of what to do with it.. but how cheap is cheap enough and how do I convince him of this.. Ive heard $10AMU is a good price... since I already agreed to $20k initially(maybe naïve, but I saw so many C's in the 50 -60's range that it sounded like a great deal!) now I'm looking for exit strategies or a proper good deal worth the time and effort of brining her up to date
  7. I'm actually located in Miami area, but have been looking at HWO as a home base hopefully. Still quite difficult to find an open tie-down, let alone a hangar but its location is great! Whats the budget your looking at spending btw? Send me a PM if you feel more comfortable
  8. Yes! Hello there. I am also looking at a few Mooneys and looking to become an owner of this esteemed aircraft! I have a pre-buy scheduled for one in Ocala next week for a M20C that doesnt fly anymore(only 20 hrs in the last 14yrs) but has been hangered its whole life. Have you done your research on mooneys? Flown one already, or all interest is by the numbers and fame they have?
  9. Really good advice, and that's what I'm hoping for here. Hopefully the clock did stop, even though it's not a climate controlled hangar. I'm wondering how much is near nothing and how can I make him aware to it.. I have a pre-buy scheduled for it July 5th-6th with an IA so if all goes well to get the annual. Or to give me a list of how much work it needs to drop the price even lower, and basically give it away hopefully.. I am a certified A&P but don't have an IA I personally know to help me with this case..plus I don't have enough experience on these GA aircraft overall to fully take on the project.. You would've been a perfect candidate for the IA!! Let me know if you do hear back, and if your still interested in helping me bring this Mooney back to its glory days!
  10. No sir it does not, would need a ferry permit.. trying to see if i can get it to PJ's in Avon Park if possible. If not second choice would be to have a great I&A come do the pre-buy and annual i presume if all goes well..
  11. Thank you for this recommendation @mike_elliott! I just spoke with Arnold Holmes, great guy! Although he just hung his mechanic business up and has decided to pursue his DAR responsibilities full time. If you know of anybody else that would be greatly appreciated
  12. Hello fellow Mooniacs! I pulled the trigger on a purchase agreement for a 1966 M20C located in Leeward Air Ranch near Ocala,FL. I am looking for recommendations on very sharp I&As to inspect this plane that has only 20 hours flown in the last 15 years. I know it's a long shot but I tend to have great luck and need confirmation there is no looming issues with her and she is one sharp bird! Most likely if all goes well,I would ask to complete the PPI and finish it as an annual. Any recommendations on specific points to be keen on are also welcome! I.e. spar corrosion, fuel seepage, pucks, camshaft corrosion, and anything else I'm missing or specific ways to analyze these big ticket items. Thank you in advance for your time! -Michael Brian
  13. Thank you for confirming this.. I was a bit scared off right off the bat. A good point indeed! I know that the Instrument Rating will be super beneficial in terms of unlimiting the conditions of flight. I will look more closely for this. This is more around what I was calculating.. Yes, a good point to consider.. I am thinking I would rather wait a little just to make sure to get it all in shot, and not do the upgrades later that would end up proving to be more costly. But yes, a fine line to decide whether its worth waiting for the panel I would prefer or to get flying in my own bird sooner than later..
  14. Yea... this makes me think more and reconsider my options, its great advice but now makes me rethink even more! hahaha I'm hoping to get a ride in a M20C this week for the first time and will bring my spouse to ride in the back seat and give me her opinion on space Yes, also a great point! Kinda get the excited and falling in love with the first girl kinda itis, should I am doing my best to be cautious and extra meticolous about the details. YES,THIS IS VERY SOUND ADVICE!!! These words resonate very well with me as I dont let somebody quickly enthuse me to the next level of aircraft which MIGHT cost me initially 72k but in reality will be closer to 100k once I start the annuals and regular maintenance. That is what I'm looking at now then, a solid 45k for a M20C(or E,F,G THANKS TO @danad lol), and have that extra 25k hanging around for extra oops moments. Ehhh... if all the maintenance is up to date, still 20AMU-30AMU per year..??? Is this including hangar, insurance, annual, & gas? Am I missing something??
  15. This is a recurring theme I've seen from you, and it holds very wise experience! Yes, this sounds quite logical and thoughtful, was just wondering if anybody from MS would also try to upsell me to a J. The difference is, a mechanic recommended that, where the opinions here are mostly pilots with some that do both, pilot and turn wrenches. Sounds like a WAAS 430 is quite a beneficial factor, especially after having trained for my PPL with one installed as well. Fair enough, best way to minimize risk I see This is what I'm leaning towards, although found one for 40k but with an engine over TBO.. I appreciate different prespectives so thank you for sharing! no hangar available in S. FL, so thats a NO-GO for me Fair enough, I do like the idea but maybe not just as I'm starting out, maybe a few years down the road when I'm a bit more coasting in my piloting and life careers Yes, thats what I AM currently making the realization of. Instead of going for a monster deal(low entry price) that I will EVENTUALLY put the money into but will loose lots of time and effort.. I am looking to get the money in up front and have one thats flying nicely to be enjoyed more THIS IS FINE ADVICE! I am currently looking to stay true to this and not get caught up falling in love with every bird I see because I'm still so enthuesed(maybe I typo'd this)about getting into the aviation field finally as a PILOT! This is what I am looking to assess and re-evaluate here in this thread. I normally look for the best I can do within certain limits. As I am not prepared to spend the +$70k(No J) and would like to fly more sooner than later.. M20C it is, to not let the scope and experience creep fly away from me! ALL IN ALL GENTLEMAN, I APPRECIATE YOUR FINE INPUTS TO MAKE THE MOST SOUND DECISION FOR WHAT I'M LOOKING TO ACHEIVE. WILL KEEP YOU POSTED!!!
  16. Yes fair enough, currently I am looking to steer clear if possible, even though its with a STEEP discount.. generally the consesous is to find best bird thats currently flying, better than a hangar queen i suppose..
  17. Ooo, monthly costs to maintain.. that's a great question.. been so busy thinking about monthly payments and insurance, haven't thought about monthly costs. So oil changes random bits,is that what constitutes monthly expenses? As for the 10k bill, isn't that what credit is for? Yea I've thought about it... not sure I want to give in and go that way, I got bit by the mooney bug and it's BITING HARD. Hahaha, I hear that, looking at KTMB and KHWO for tie down space, not as easy as it looks..
  18. I KNOW!! That's why I was all Gung ho on getting me a C, until that phone call and recommendation.. I've read that they're quite reliable and dependable and avoid all the hot start problems of the IO's Another vote for the C, woohoo!
  19. Hello there! Better to clarify up front. I have been 31 times around the sun. I am willing to do most of the general maintenance needed to maintain the aircraft flying, although I have maybe 2 years of GA experience and that was more than 10 years ago. I have general aviation tools(nothing specific, no cyl base wrenches) and no hangar to perform the maintenance. I still remember quite a bit from A&P school that knowledge should come back to me quite quickly after digging my head in a bit. And no, I do not currently have at the moment an IA to help sign 337's. So in a nutshell, I would prefer for the aircraft to be flying currently, and I maintain and learn the Mooney way of maintenance as I get to know her better. Thanks in advance -Michael Brian
  20. Ok Mooniacs, hear me out! Originally I was hoping to get into a 65-67 C', for under 40k(which I know is hopeful considering most M20C's are between 40-70k)as a first mooney(and airplane in general) coming out of my PP certification. I found an extremely low time hangar queen(original engine) that hadn't been flown in 6 years for a STEEP discount.. and obviously was intrigued for the low cost of entry. After calling a respectable Mooney service center(Daytona), found out that to bring her back to life and completely airworthy(without any avionics upgrades) would be about 40-50 AMU. That plus a bunch of time because most shops are backed up with work, makes me wonder quite a bit.. I did quite a bit of reading here on and the general consensus is to buy the best (flying and airworthy) airplane that you can for the money and be grateful for what you got. Better a high time airframe and high time engine that is flown regularly, than a low time, flew every once in a while kinda thing. Although I didn't want to acknowledge it, I DO KNOW as an A&P, airplanes are meant to be flying and have less problems while in the air.. Any ground time an aircraft has is time alloted to let things go awry.. I'm usually looking for deals but was recommended from Daytona to NOT buy a project as a first plane as that would not go well for me. He also recommended I go ahead and go for a M20J which he said is at the low end 70k(high end of my original M20C) and a better airframe overall with less problems and more parts available.. Now my head is spinning, was hoping below 40k(and complex), to about 70k(and higher as I have already seen) and high-performance rating. So now as I'm questioning the whole process, would love some input on your PROS & CONS for the best mooneys for under 72k(no need for crazy avionics btw)! And by best,I mean great balance of Fuel economy, Useful Load, access to maintenance and parts, range(in that order) and just a good solid aircraft to be relied upon overall for years to come. M20C?40-70k M20J?70-100k Is it really worth going to the basic end of a J instead of a well equipped C? Now there's my backdrop, So please, honest and thoroughly give me your $0.02 as I will HUMBLY receive your thoughts.. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN ADVANCE -Michael Brian
  21. In Ocala,FL Looking for an IA to do the pre-buy and if all goes well to sign it off as an annual as the plane hasn't had one in quite some time
  22. This I do agree with, no doubt. As long as the scope of the PPI is that thorough, which it should be,then there should be no problem making it into an annual,so be it your choice, if you choose to keep the plane.
