This would not be the end of the world for most. If your willing to pay 200 bucks a year to fltplan.com you can have PDC sent via email or direct to garmin pilot (providing data or cell coverage). If I did a ton of IFR flying in to the following airports I would absolutely pay 200 bucks a year to not have to write down and read back clearances. FltPlan PDC Premium Service

With the G500/G600 you could go with a single GI-275 PFD and when configured as a standby it can be all the things a GI-275 (MFD, PFD, HSI, CDI) will do. I see little advantage with getting two GI-275 unless your replacing the second CDI (If memory serves me correct, the G500/G600 can only support one GPS/NAV as primary). In that case check out Sarasota's Trade In on the CDI for a base or an ADHRS unit. Garmin GI275 Upgrade Promotion (sarasotaavionics.com)

The Super ES is the experimental version of the Columbia. Fixed gear, 230 knots. The 4P is a totally different animal. -
Cumulative Effect of Speed Mods?
AerostarDriver replied to HH60HLDG's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I know of a Lancair Super-ES (Turbo 550, G3X, full de-ice, MT prop) currently off market. My IA is doing an conditional inspection on it right now, I can put you in touch with the owner, if your interested. The owner just jumped up to a Kingair. -
Steve, I have seen G5s, G3Xs and G500 (non-txi) with Avidyne 440/540s but I suspect this was not the most legal path forward. In theory the Avidyne 440/540 can pretend to be 430/530 units. @N205S The dynon route may be one you want to check out.

Working with a friend who is trying to go GPS only in her Arrow. After talking with her avionics shop of choice, they claimed that the GPS175/GNC355/GNX375 cannot be used as the primary source of IFR navigation and requires a nav radio like an SL30 or something like a GPS400, GNS 430, or GTN 650. I cannot remember where I heard it but I also remember seeing it in text on one of the forms fairly recently. Has anyone run in to this or heard similar?

Does anyone else find it confusing that "engine reference manuals" contains airframe maintenance manuals and "Pilot operating handbooks" contains parts manuals? Would it not help to add a few more categories and reorganizing the documents that are all ready there. Some examples of new categories would be like: Parts manuals Mooney Service Manuals STCs and 337s ADs and SBs Checklists I would be more then happy to help catalog if able.

I have one of the AV-20s installed in my E model in hopes that it could just be used as a clock and that in a pinch it could be used for its AOA features as well as emergency source of attitude but the more I have read about it the more I feel it will just be an expensive clock. @0TreeLemur certified and open source are a word combination that aviation regulatory bodies have not learned yet.

@tony Did the H105 work for you? -
When I bought my airplane it had a Donaldson air filter with a date of 1993, after trying to clean it a number of times, I have convinced myself that it is likely to far gone to save. After spending some time looking for a new Donaldson air filter, I was unable to locate it but I found some recommendations for the Challenger filter on MS and got one ordered. After getting it, I feel like it missing a cover. If anyone has a Challenger filter on an E or F and have pictures of it installed?

Garmin GI-275 Install Question
AerostarDriver replied to AerostarDriver's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Took about 5 hours to make the harness, do the splices and get everything mounted up. Now just need to add a hole for a circuit breaker and add two pins to the GTX-330 connector. Still a few weekends from flipping the master but this was quite easy to do while I had everything pulled apart for the dual G5's. -
This is the one I used for my whole G5 install. INS/EXTR.TOOL 24-20AWG R/W | Aircraft Spruce I did not need it until I was depinning my GNS-480 and removing the GI-106.

Technology Today vs the 1960 Mooney Design
AerostarDriver replied to cliffy's topic in General Mooney Talk
Going back a few pages I would kill for a diesel powered Mooney. Horsepower is a terrible way to rate aircraft engines torque is much better and its why, for example, the diesel archer performs pretty much the same as its O-360 stable mate with a nearly 30hp reduction in "power". -

My E just had a wing replacement from Don Maxwell just before I bought it. When it was all said and done it was 17. Some exploration was done to see if the rear sub spar could be replaced which may have driven the price up a little but I would budget between 15 and 20k. Also keep in mind that the wing that gets put on is likely not going to be as nice as the wing your taking off. For example, I had to go in and re-run the pitot heat because some how that had gotten cut in the gear well. -
Short / soft field Mooney takeoff

I have had very bad experiences with dogs at airports... It is highly recommended that you keep your dog on a leash or better yet not on airport. I while back I was working on restoring a Yak-52 in which the first flight post restoration was "exciting", a second flight a few weeks later brought the whole airport out to watch. A dog decided to chase after the nose wheel of the airplane. It was a sad day for all parties involved. Happened again a few months later with a 182 that I was working on. -
Unrelated to the OP's, post the link to the flying article is a great read.

Garmin GI-275 Install Question
AerostarDriver replied to AerostarDriver's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
@Minivation THANK YOU! This has been extremely helpful. So far this has been the only truly educated answer I have been able to get from anyone. I am approaching this from the perspective of just wanting an MFD to augment my GNS-480 (specifically terrain and traffic). I also intend to use a second GI-275 for my engine monitor to be installed at a later date, thus this would also give me the ability to display multiple engine pages at once. Legally, as far as I can tell, note 6 on the G5 install manual for dual G5s you cannot have an other device configured as an CDI attached to the navigator driving the G5. In my case I am just looking to get a moving map displaying the flight plan and Traffic from the 330ES which Garmin says works just fine. The G5 manual makes reference to splicing the RS-232 with other devices that need it, when I asked two Garmin installers about splicing ARINC 429, they said they "did this all time". When I asked for example, they used G5s and the MX200 when paired with a GNS 480... I believed MX20/MX200 was mostly RS-232 based but I could be wrong. I think I am going to try it, worse case I end up just configuring the unit as an EIS and needing to get a GEA 24. Thanks again. -

Wing replacement cost is right around 17,000... That was for an M20E. -
Thanks Dan, Just ordered one today.

Garmin GI-275 Install Question
AerostarDriver replied to AerostarDriver's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I believe with my GAD29B I am using both available outputs with my GAD using one input and then my GTX-330ES using one input for traffic. This would leave me with 1 unconfigured input and the ability to split both the 429 outputs if the protocol was correct. After talking with Sarasota avionics it does not look like it is possible unless I give up traffic on the GNS 480 and have the GI-275 be the only traffic display. Another option that was raised by my A&P was to use a MX20 and MX200 MFD which would give me more ARNIC in and outs BUT would kind of defeat the point as I don't have the panel space and I am looking to use the GI-275 as the MFD. Sarasota avionics recommended I call Garmin to see if the GI-275 would pass the traffic back to the GNS-480 but Garmin tells me, "The GI-275 is not listed for compatibility with the GNS-480 and that my installer can work with Garmin engineers to figure out if that is possible". -
Highly recommend Ubiquiti, I use their stuff for everything. Home, Hanger, Work. If you have the FBO's cooperation an airmax bullet radio with even a pretty basic antenna will get you going but it is point to point and requires a access point to re-broadcast. airMAX Bullet AC Dual-Band Radio – Ubiquiti Inc. The method that would be more passive with the FBO would be UniFi Mesh Access point – Ubiquiti Inc. with a directional antenna like 2.4 GHz airMAX 24 dBi RocketDish Antenna – Ubiquiti Inc. but I would recommend using a second unit to actually repeat the signal.

My 2021 quote was 2500 for 75K Hull on an M20E with a Commercial ASEL + Instrument Rating, ~275 hours with ~50 RG and ~10 hours in a Mooney. The instrument rating and having RG time will drive the cost down a bit.

AerostarDriver replied to Tahir K's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
@Tahir K If you don't mind me asking what they ended up charging for the airspeed indicator? I have an Airspeed and Vertical speed indicators that are functional but in need of a refresh. Nevermind, I finally saw it on the list only after I posed my question.
