  10. From the threads I have read here, I believe msr's do a pretty respectable job of discussion accidents. Sure we don't have the all the facts and the comments are only speculative, but we have a pretty astute group here (always complement your audience) and I always learn something. As for the FAA investigations; I believe they do a really good job of investigating Part 135 accidents, especially if there is a black box involved, but not as good a job on GA. Not for lack of trying, but because of the lack of information and budgetary constraints. Sometimes they aren't even able to visit the crash site. I know of a dozen sights within 100 miles that have never been visited (Id & Mt backcountry). So, I'm all for a respectable discussion as I believe we have been doing. jb
  11. Why does an overhaul decrease the life of a prop. Seems counter intuitive.
  12. Hmmm... POH. Yep, I'm going with the POH. Then there is also the ( as I hear wonderful) MAPA Pilot Proficiency Program!
  13. I'm such a low timer I feel like most pilots are better, but I do read a lot of accident reports of people doing some pretty dumb stuff. Fortunately I control my own sched so if it (or me) ain't good, I don't go. Flying when everything is good is relatively easy; but when distractions or problems or even emergencies crop up, the real test begins. To quote the great 21st century philosopher Mike Tyson "Everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth". I am fortunate that my instructor and I have become good friends, so I fly with him often. We do primarily emergency procedures but also go out and fly in weather to get real time experience there as well. Adhering to training, procedures and currency is my plan to becoming a better pilot. That's the plan, but you know the plans of mice and men. jb
  14. A few pictures would help me live this event vicariously through those lucky enough to be able to attend
  15. Yup. prolly shuda been posted in another thread. Unless you add ROP while you can! Maybe.
  16. We live on a planet with finite resources. Modern man (post industrial revolution) has been at it what, a couple three hundred years, and we are already seeing the effects of unrestrained growth and consumption. This is just the beginning. Technological advances will lead to more growth and consumption, but advances in recycling of our finite resources using a sustainable energy source will mitigate their losses. Natural ecosystems will continue to recede as mankind's numbers continue to increase. Barring some catastrophic event(s) of drastic population collapse, at some point, personal rationing is inevitable. Market forces to provide that rationing will eventually lead to popular uprisings as have happened before. The "have nots" will only suffer for so long. Governmental controls will require world wide cooperation; a crap shoot at best. The solution: fiik. I'm not optimistic for man's long term survival. I believe the world itself will last billions of years longer than us. Though I did once see a solution expressed on a bumper sticker of all places. It's admittedly a tough choice, but would provide an unequivocal solution. SAVE THE PLANET KILL YOURSELF Have a nice day. jb
  17. I wonder if checklists that used questions rather than statements would if enlist a more thoughtful response/action? Is the carb heat off? Is the fuel selector on the fuller tank? Or better perhaps, is the fuel selector really on the one you want to use? What think?
  18. @carusoam It’s just conversation. We certainly aren’t going to solve anything so complex here. Thanks for you insight; I always value your opinion. Sincerely jb
  19. @carusoam Simple questions often beget complex answers.
  20. If it was available. Just a thought that popped in me head. I would, lord knows I’ve done way dumber things.
  21. Thanks again to all. My dumb question (the answer was right there in the POH) started a very useful and worthwhile discussion. Turns out, dumb questions are useful as well. jb
  22. Ahh, page 7-11 in my POH. Missed that. Thanks for the help.
  23. I've searched this topic, but not found an answer to my specific question. My POH and placard (shown below) both have the same instructions regarding the emergency procedure; however, neither mention the red button that resides next to the gear switch on my 78J. The red button is labeled "gear safety bypass". Where does this undocumented and most mysterious bypass fit into the emergency procedure? Is it a push, a pull; hell, it could be a rotate for all I know. Also, my "gear circuit breaker" is labeled "gear cont". I know this because I have had to use it. Long story short. Putting gear down, unsafe light goes off but no gear down indicator lights up on floor and the gear cont. circuit breaker popped - pushed in breaker and it pops again. Went through emergency procedure and handle moves 4-5" but jams. Flexed the airplane abit, reset breaker (it holds), reset latch, tried gear again (nada), no green light on floor. Raise a friend, fly over his place and get gear down conformation. Land without incident. Emergency cable still jammed. Pulled actuator assembly and off it goes to Lasar, they go through it, we replace the no back spring (which I sold to another MSr in need) and a couple three AMUs later all's well. EXCEPT I don't remember if I included the red button in my ordeal, though at some point I'm sure I did. So if y'all can clue me in on the red button...
