  1. FWIW, EPA air permitting can be a very lengthy and expensive process. If the previous permit lapsed during the plant shutdown, the whole process may have had to be repeated. You may NOT begin a process that requires permitting until you have the permit in hand. It may have been a factor in outsourcing the painting. I’m so glad I retired!
  2. I would recommend using mineral spirits versus 100LL. It is much safer to work with from a flammability and skin exposure standpoint. It should do an equally good job of dissolving tar-like deposits, but it will still take some elbow grease.
  3. Looks like N7123U is still registered in North Carolina.
  4. I too have fond memories of watching Rudy Frasca fly his Grumman Wildcat at Oshkosh way back when. I wonder how many times he brought the Mooney there. I’m still amazed that this was essentially a one owner plane.
  5. Are any of the service centers from 1965 listed near any of you still around?
  6. Agreed. Agreed. ADS-B is first in the list.
  7. I finally have gotten a chance to organize and post some pictures on my new plane that I picked up and flew home on January 16, 2019. Shout out to Paul Steen for his insight and advice. I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to acquire this plane. N5901Q was factory demonstrator that was purchased in 1966 by Rudy Frasca. He kept it in Champaign/Urbana, IL and flew it as his personal airplane up until 2014 when he donated it to the EAA. It was flown to Oshkosh that year but was basically parked until this past fall. I believe that the paint and much of the interior is still original, but is in very good condition. The plane has been very well maintained and has had a number of nice upgrades in the past 10-15 years ( redo the panel in a standard 6 pack config., Garmin GNS430, GMA340, GTX327, and an S-Tec 30 w/GPSS). It also came with some interesting historical items, such as a Mooney color brochure from 1965, a Mooney PC brochure, and a Mooney Service directory list from 1965. I also got the original Mooney leather key holder complete with a screw driver. here are some pictures if you’re interested.
  8. Oh wait, I see it has the same part number as this one.
  9. Anyone out there installed this one? https://pilotshq.com/donaldson-air-maze-lycoming-spin-oil-filter-adapter-77852-204418-156-p-15027.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAi57gBRDqARIsABhDSMrn5W31iCAJe3ndAhQ-EUBpE3bT38u-mnK7zmW9czcG3oHloIlT8nEaAvW0EALw_wcB
  10. Can anyone identify this parking brake valve that’s on my ‘65 M20C?
  11. You might want to consider a Garmin GDL-82 instead. Fewer negatives versus trying to cut up the navy light cover. Plus, you could probably resell it once you switch to a new transponder.
  12. So I lubricated the j bar handle with tri-flo and flew today to see if it helped. It made a huge difference. The j bar now locks up and down quite easily.
  13. ya, I neglected to mention that. I do enjoy Kermit Weeks and Pilotfun101 on youtube.
  14. Minnesota weather is brutal. My last 3 days have consisted of: 1. Drink several cups of coffee in the morning and look out the window. Surf on Mooneyspace.com. 2. Drink beer in the afternoon and look out the window. Surf on Mooneysace.com. 3. Drink beer or wine in the evening, can’t look out the window because it’s too dark. Watch TV and surf on Mooneyspace.com. 4. Go to bed. Thank goodness for retirement. It’s supposed to be 60 degrees warmer on Saturday than it was this morning. If I make it that long I hope to go flying!
  15. I am wondering if the calculated arm on my ‘65C is correct. My empty weight is 1607# but the arm seems a bit forward at 44.66”. So much so that I have to be careful with 2 on board and full fuel not to be too nose heavy. It would be a pain to redo all of the wt & balance calculation I have, but after reading on the blog, I’m not that confident in having someone use portable scales either.
  16. Paul, please add me to your map. Thanks.
  17. Also, the term 99% Isopropanol is actually 99.9% IPA and 0.1% water (with traces of other compounds). Commercial standard grades are 91% (the azeotrope of IPA and water) and 99%.
  18. Actually, the yellow bottle heet contains methanol. Isoheet, the red bottle, is isopropanol. They both should have less than 0.1% water. Rubbing alcohol found in the drug store is 70% isopropanol and 30% water.
  19. With -50 F wind chill they are saying exposed skin will have frostbite in 5 minutes. I’d wait.
  20. Mine popped out at about 140 mph and stopped about half way. I was more concerned about damage to the gear doors. BTW, it was much harder to move the J bar at that speed. It wasn’t until we had slowed to about 120 mph that I was able to push it all the way down to the floor.
  21. Thanks. No problem locking down, just up.
  22. I live in the Twin Cities and would not travel here this Wednesday. They are predicting cold temperatures that we haven’t seen for 20 years with windchills below -50F! Expecting widespread school and business closures. Thankfully it should be much warmer by next weekend. I would worry about the crankcase breather becoming blocked with ice at those temperatures.
  23. Actually the block that is worn is the uplock on the floor. I will look to see if the carpet is obstructing anything. Thanks.
  24. Anthony, this is in my new(to me) 1965 M20C, N5901Q, that I just purchased from the EAA. I’ve had it for about a week now. The carpet is fairly new but doesn’t appear to be obstructing the J bar in any way. I do feel like there’s not much room for my fingers to fit between the handle and the carpet, so I have tried engaging the uplock with my fingers on top only without any more success. The uplock block does appear to be oval on one the front side and perfectly round on the back. Not sure why that would make it difficult to engage the handle however. No matter how hard I bore down, I could not force that handle to slide into the uplock block. I finally was successful after half a dozen cycles down and up of the J bar. I wondered if anyone had tried a spray on dry lubricant on the inside of the unlock block. Or, should I use some emery cloth on the inside bore of the block. FYI, the downlock was replaced not too long ago and has consistently worked fine. Also, there has been recent work where the landing gear were removed, refurbished, and reinstalled, so rigging could be contributing to the problem? I may try to get it up on jacks at my A&P’s hangar so we can investigate this further if there isn’t an obvious fix. I will try to post some pictures and tell a little about the history of this plane soon, since I find it very interesting. Kim
