  1. First - Image stabilization - You need this which most action cameras will have unless it is a relic my my hero 2. 2nd - ND filter - You need this if pointing through the prop. Eliminate the weird prop from your video. I've found that a ND32 filter works best for my RPM-2500-2550 3rd - Metadata (overlaying the airspeed and altitude) - Just neat. 4th - pick one brand and stick with it. 5th Editing software. - This is why you should stick to one brand. I have 4 different cameras when I fly. I know, dumb, but I was trying them out to see what I like best and they are all very similar. I use a VIRB 360, but haven't tried making a 360 video yet. I use the wide angle, mount it under my tail. I forget what mount I bought, but just make your own it will save you a bit of dumb money. The wide angle is just right IMO for seeing the wings and the gear raise and drop. The nice thing about the Garmin cameras is their software makes it pretty easy to overlay the metadata (airspeed/altitude). I email my flight data from garmin pilot app and load it into garmin's video editing software. GoPro Hero 2 - I use this in the cockpit because I have the correct ND filter for it. ND filters remove almost all of the prop from the image and are a must if pointing out the windscreen. The bad thing is that gopros this old don't have image stabilization. It can be done with editing software but any modern camera will have stabilization. Akaso v50x - GoPro knockoff without a good app. Records great video, but will only have image stabilization in 1080, not 4K (same with the Akaso Elite). I mount this under my wing. You can see in the video how smooth it is with the image stabilization under the wing. I mounted this with a bolt through a gopro sticky mount. The akaso elite is just like the v50x but more expensive. It is not in the video below, but I haven't noticed any difference with the v50x. Editing software. - . This was a challenge since I had 3 different brands of cameras. It took days to find a good mix of software. I probably tried a dozen different freeware editors to find the right mix. I use openshot for the main video. It is easy to load 4 different cameras, sync them, then select the clips/views pretty seemlessly. If you go with all gopros or all garmins, using their respective editors makes this a lot easier, so I am told. Once I am done editing the video, including awesome music, I put it into Garmin's editor and add the metatdata overlays. I just really like the overlays. You may have to sync the timing of the overlays to your video too. Below is the end product. Not great video, but I am learning. And if I didn't have a 3 year old I could have spent a lot more time editing. Hope this helps.
  2. When I first got my ADS-B transponder installed I signed up for the blocking and it worked. About a year later I decided that I want to review the flights on flight aware. So I switched to the middle option in LADD, the one that only websites that I subscribe to should show it. LIES! This is not the case, anyone can see my flights. Maybe the FAA put me on the wrong list, but I really don't care. So you can either have them totally blocked, or totally public, despite what the FAA says.
  3. My plane is 42 years young and original interior. It doesn't have issues like those pics. Makes me feel good about Mooney Quality.
  4. Does it come with FREE Garmin database updates for life?
  5. To answer the OP I would move to a Velocity XL-Rg. If meticulously built by someone I trust. This was my first choice when plane shopping, but nobody would insure me at the time. Now I am less trusting of homebuilts than I was then.
  6. ^^ Yep. My wife wants nothing to do with landing our J. She knows the basic emergency drill and could most likely get the plane near the runway, but it would be ugly. Pulling a chute would probably be safer for her. I am not afraid to admit that I am one of the 8 who said yes. I would trade my plane for a cirrus, but even the cheapest cirrus is close to double the value of my J. And I would fly it for a few years and sell it off for a mooney. I would NOT buy a comparably priced/equipped cirrus to a mooney. No way. I have never even sat in a Cirrus, but I would love the chance to try the sidestick. 95% of the time I am on autopilot and I think I would like to not have the yoke/tablet in my chest. Again, i have never NOT had a yoke in front of me so i really don't know.
  7. Nice video! Loved the reflection off the bottom of the wing.
  8. And I thought I was doing good until I got my insurance quotes this year... only flew 70 hours this year in the mooney, another 35 in a cessna, got my IR and my insurance went from $1530 to $1888. UGH!
  9. Yes. It is just emphasizing the tower so that you are not caught off-guard.
  10. I had real high hopes for this aircraft even though I have no skin in the game. But after watching all of his flights, I don't think he is a capable enough test pilot or engineer for this. THIS WAS SCARY TO WATCH! The lack of stability is crazy. I wonder if a longer fuselage would help. And what are they doing to counter the engine torque? I haven't heard of anything, but I haven't watched every video. Damn I wish they would get this right.
  11. I uploaded the GPX file from garmin pilot app.
  12. Just tried this ayvri website. https://ayvri.com/scene/xkw77z1058/ckft65prr00013b68d3y0yfrj Pretty cool, but does anyone have suggestions to something better? I would like to be able to export something like this to a video format, but that does not seem to be an option.
  13. My laptop and joystick are feeling woefully inadequate. And no I am not going to post a picture.
  14. There are 2 Chris's here. And I am the wrong one.
  15. Well done sir. And keep it up. The community needs and thanks you!
  16. Strongly disagree with this. If I were in the market when it was available, I would have gladly paid the $110K for it. I've been in love with that plane since before i got my J. But I totally agree with this "It’s already capable."
  17. I too am looking to build hours for a possible later life, flying job. And i have found that flying slow is difficult in a J. Because flying faster, seeing more places is way more fun. On a few flights I have pulled back power and comfortably cruised at ~7 GPH.
  18. Welcome aboard. LOVE the paint scheme on that bird.
  19. I recently had a horrible avionics experience. About 5 flights after my annual, my mode C stopped working on my GTX345 that was installed less than a year ago. "Pressure altitude failed" error on the 345. I called the shop that had installed it and they said it was probably the encoder. They had not replaced my encoder when the 345 was installed because the old one worked fine. Quoted me $300 for a new encoder and 3-5 hours labor for a total of $6-800. Because I was on call for work I called a local shop who said about the same thing except they quoted $7-900 and could get me in that week. I thought PERFECT! Let's do it. I dropped it off, the next day they called and said it was good to go. I went back, paid, taxied out and BAM, same error. I taxi back let them have it for 3 more days. They called and said it was fixed again and that it was a software issue with the 345, but they updated it and its working. Charged me another $1500 in labor for troubleshooting and were nice enough to take off $400 of the labor. I paid, departed and it worked fine for 3 flights and the error was back. I emailed the shop and asked if they wanted another crack at fixing it and all I got was crickets. Scanning beechtalk, i found someone with the same error. It was a cabling issue. I, with an IA from work, started pulling out my stack and relatively quickly found the pinched cable. Mine wasn't sheered like the one on beachtalk, so I was able to push it aside and replaced the stack and the problem has gone away so far. Long story short, I paid over $1900 for an avionics shop to fix something which they were unable to do in 15 ish hours. I fixed it in less than 2 hours and now my trust in avionics is marred by this one bad experience. Oh well, live and learn.
  20. I always watch and when they try to get the cap back on I stop them and tell them I will do it. Hasn't failed me yet.
  21. They definitely got it off the ground, but you could only tell by the struts flexing later in the video. I was so excited when I saw the title to the video, only to be disappointed after watching it. I have high hopes for the raptor, but doubt it will get over 240kts TAS.
  22. This was a GoPro hero 2 with a ND32 filter. I have tested ND8, 16 and 32 and 32 has looked the best for me. The next time I fly I am going to use the same filter on a better camera.
  23. Still figuring out camera configurations, but here is the first of my 5 videos so far. Let me know what you think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ1E3XPllak
  24. Here is why I disagree with this, and feel free to rip into me if you disagree: by waiting for what actually caused this accident whether it is fuel starvation, medical or a prop falling off, we will only think about that one cause, and one or two solutions. On the other hand, monday morning quarterbacking these accidents, it forces us to think about the different scenarios, however unlikely, that cause various kinds of accidents. I have never considered my prop falling off the airplane on approach before. Probably due to the low likelihood of this ever happening. It is not something I will ever worry about, but it is beneficial to think about, and to theorize what I should do in this event. Just my .02
