The winds weren’t bad taking off. The flight was surprisingly smooth at 250. Everyone was fighting turbulence, even the big dogs. I was on top of 90% of the weather at 250. IMC the whole time. I picked up light rime ice in the clouds and the TKS did a great job keeping up with it. The headwinds were tough at all altitudes but seemed to be forecasted less at 250. Even with the headwind I still saw 150kts which I was happy with. When I diverted and descended to 11,000 it got a little rowdy. Turbulence was the worst part. The weather was pretty much as forecasted. I deviated because of rain that was above me and to be safe I went ahead and descended below the freezing level. Definitely don’t want to get in SLD. I did a lot of flight planning and checking the weather before going. When I fly in weather like this, I give myself a bunch of outs and know where the freezing levels are. I also ran my plan by a commercial pilot friend before heading out. I would make the flight again.
