  1. All my money goes to avgas and aerotows. Thankfully down here in the southwest the lapse rate gets to be so crazy that hanging on to thermals is child's play. Regularly max out the vario at over 10 knots of lift in the afternoons!
  2. I heard an interview with Martha King where she described getting all of hers. Even for her, with the name recognition and everything, getting the airship rating was a matter of luck and being in the right place at the right time. She mentioned powered-lift is indeed off-limits for the time being. Ground-launch glider is a tough one in the US, but I think a few places (like three) do it primarily for people looking to get the endorsement. Another oddball one is gyroplane. There's a local instructor here and it's pretty fun to watch students bounce around in those. I guess we could open it up to other kinds of certificates, too. Navigator, anyone?
  3. I'm based in ABQ, out of town at the moment but will be back in a week or two. Drop me a PM and we can talk.
  4. Garmin Field Service engineering (the techs who support avionics installers) have been recommending a) ensuring rigging is in spec, b) check for control binding (great info above) and c) update all software. The G5s have had at least three different software updates to deal specifically with this. Latest is version 6.82.
  5. This is common -- in absence of better guidance, commercial applicants seem to pick Va for these maneuvers . The ACS is quiet on airspeeds and the only time it mentions something specific, it's Va. I don't think anyone is doing it out of great scrutiny, it's just the first airspeed they see and Va is indeed a relevant airspeed in maneuvers (just not the best one in these cases). Pilots flying slower planes have an easier time getting away with it.
  6. Here are the power settings for my M20J. Not exactly what you're looking for but hopefully helpful. Steep turns: 100kts, 17" MP Accelerated stalls: < 95kts Chandelles: 115kts Lazy eights: 115kts Eights on pylons: 100kts Power-off 180s: fly downwind at best glide speed In particular, if you try to fly accelerated stalls anywhere near Va, you'll have to pull crazy hard to get the stall to happen. Fly it at a much lower speed so you can induce the stall without anyone losing their lunch.
  7. Slower than you'd think for most maneuvers. I did my commercial in a J and most entry speeds were either 100 or 115 knots. The Bravo speeds may be a hair faster, owing to the weight, but in general you'll fly speeds that seem unusually slow compared to normal cruise flight.
  8. Great to hear from you, @Comet! Saw your PM and sent a mail. If there are others in the area, get in touch by PM or replying here. Always looking to connect with more Caravaners.
  9. This is a stripped-down version of what I use. It graphs and calculates when ADs, oil changes, mags, etc. are due. Lots of charts. Nothing wrong with the others (I used to use myflightbook, it's a good one) but in the end I wanted to control the raw data and add my own calculations. For example, I initially started by tracking part numbers only, but found many part manufacturers use both model numbers and part numbers, and sometimes you're missing one or the other, and sometimes you have both. So I started tracking both and now have a complete set of cross-references. That's the great part about Excel. Add what matters to you. If something doesn't make sense to you, just delete the column. Or do whatever you want. Template maintenance tracker.xlsx
  10. Seems like Controller and TAP both do periodic cleanups of their listings. I notice them go offline in batches. Another thing I've noticed is that the supply of solid airplanes has dropped, so that 90 -> 61 seems more like 30 really good planes to just a handful. What's left are a lot of duds, either because the plane itself is sketchy or maybe the seller has unrealistic expectations. (A few good ones are out there but they get snapped up right away! Literally go from posted to "under contract" within a day or two.) It's not just Mooneys, either. I'm tracking other airframes and the whole market seems like this.
  11. I know, I wrote it We haven't done a membership drive to get Caravan members on the website, and we don't have forums for questions like this on that website. So MS it is :-)
  12. Are there any participants in past Mooney Caravan based here in New Mexico? My base of operations have shifted more and more from Seattle to Albuquerque, and I'm looking to find people near here who would be interested in Caravan and formation activities in the coming months. I know a few of you are in neighboring states -- looking forward to finding time to come fly with you too :-)
  13. Sounds good. I'll be looking to sell mine once it's off the plane, so will check back here then.
  14. Do you need one new? I'll have one available in March or April if you can wait that long. Good condition, off of my J with a Century IIB. Looks identical to the one in your photo -- a bit cleaner. I see them on eBay occasionally too.
  15. Some of us are saddled with that responsibility from the factor. My J came "clean" without either a strobe or a step. I think it's more a legal consideration rather than a visibility issue, though. Bright LED position lights (especially with flasher functionality) are at least as good as a rotating beacon hidden under the tail. Doubly so if compared to a dim and grimy legacy beacon. Strobes are unarguably the best for visibility but they're indeed blinding. Pity the regs demand them for us without beacons.
  16. A few weeks ago I saw a rumor here that Mooney had some new stock of no-back springs (the SB calls them "torsion springs") for the Plessey/GEC gear actuators. I asked my MSC to investigate and wanted to share an update. Yes, the factory did receive a shipment of torsion springs for GEC/Plessey actuators back in November, but all of them have been spoken for. I have my name on the list for the next batch of springs. If you have one of these older actuators, expressing your interest may help encourage the factory to get another round manufactured soon. Overall this is great news and reflects well on the renewed effort from the factory to support the Mooney community.
  17. My '78 has an RSA-5AD1, p/n 2524054-11. Here's a photo of the part and the location of the ID plate. Not sure if yours is the same (although wouldn't you have an -A1B6D...?) When I had to have mine overhauled a few years back, Precision said they wouldn't do it (they were focused on manufacturing) and directed me to a few places, I chose D&G Supply. They did my flow divider, too. Total was around $400 with $100 in freight.
  18. Thanks @gsxrpilot for the share and collaboration over the last few months! Everyone, please visit the site, register an account, and see what we have to offer. Our hope is that formation clinics and Oshkosh registration will be possible soon -- when that happens, we'll share more through the member list, our Google mailing list, and here on MS. Please PM me if you encounter bugs or have feedback. Thanks and here's looking forward to a great 2021 flying season!
  19. Is there any difference between the J and K panel? From the same year, at least. I can imagine differences in rocker switches but it seems to me that most of the layout and the outer dimensions would be the same.
  20. It's taken me longer in the past -- about two years ago it was 2-3 weeks to get the CDs. Fast enough if you already own the plane. If you're in a rush, Insured Aircraft Title Service (and likely others) will get you the contents of the CDs quickly for a small fee ($20) and will have them emailed within 24 hours. They used to keep the PDFs on-hand and just email them within an hour, but I think they were bit on a transaction and now they pull the physical CDs from the FAA and email them within a day. On the STC, I was digging into this when I was looking at Rockets a few months ago. Link below is someone who got the STC from Rocket about three years ago. Rocket 2900 vs 3200 GW - General Mooney Talk - Mooneyspace.com - A community for Mooney aircraft owners and enthusiasts Here's the breakdown and sheets for the two STCs: Posted October 18 (mooneyspace.com)
  21. The Garmin page for the old 650 has the same STEC "supported" info as the 650Xi. From that it seems like the 650/650Xi are designed about the same way. GTNā„¢ 650 | ADS-B | Garmin That said, ask your avionics installer. I've learned that the gotchas around avionics compatibility are endless. Even different part numbers (revisions) of the same model sometimes have different capabilities and incompatibilities.
  22. I think Mark Rouch at Top Gun Aviation in Stockton has done them, as well. They don't seem like rocket science to install (the instructions are pretty straightforward) but they do need to be programmed/configured for the airplane, and you need to run a line to the battery. Having a mechanic familiar with both Mooneys and Sureflys seems like a smart move.
  23. And if you order the wrong size, you can just buy a plane to match. Hate to let a good light go to waste. ... on a more serious note, the M20J Missiles (IO-550) have two-light cowls like the K. Is this a stock M20K cowl? I assumed it was custom from Rocket but maybe the bigger engine fits under the factory K cowl.
