  1. I’d probably go with a G5 vs AV30 if you’re planning on a Garmin AP down the road.

Sounds like a good excuse to fly the wings off from it over the next year. Free hours although the 520 with new cylinders could go another 1k hours.

  4. Fly your plane to three reputable shops, within reasonable distance, and ask to speak with the owner or lead installer. Ask them to quote you on the spot (both cost and availability). You can size up the operation, get a feel for the amount of knowledge the team has, and look at the quality/scope of the current projects they’re working on. Put the time in if you want results. Think about all the post we get a day on here for buying a new plane, starting a panel overhaul, etc. You yourself sent out requests to 10 shops. They are probably getting blasted right now from tire kickers looking for cheap bids or people wanting work done RIGHT NOW. There is a HUGE difference between making a commitment and not following through vs selectively culling through the inquiries.
  5. Why don’t you list the breakdown of what your group paid for the 275 AI instillation and we can probably give you a better estimate on what another trip to your local shop will cost.
  6. If it was the predecessor (mx20) I wouldn’t waste another penny on it. However, the 200 does not have the screen problems and the UI is a little faster as well. The unit is pretty light so fabricating a bracket to mount it shouldn’t be that difficult. There’s also a good possibility the wiring might reach the left panel location. Interfaced with a gtx345 would provide a lot of nice info and the screen quality is pretty good.
  7. Does the plane have traffic and weather displayed on the gmx? If so I think it would be a great idea. If not there are better ways of displaying charts/sectionals/airport info like a portable unit flush mounted 660/760. Having said that, a 7 inch g3x mfd display w/eis would replace your failure prone factory gauges if they’re still installed along with a ton of extra features.
  8. Along the lines of what BHF said a used Aspen for 2.5-3k with a vertical 660 might make a nice setup.
  9. I like Brian’s panel above but IMO I would pay significantly less for an aircraft that replaced the g5/g3x with two 275’s and nothing else. I guess I just differentiate a clean panel with a spartan one. Now add a 7 inch g3x mfd screen to the 275’s and I’d be on board again. Even a flush mount 760 would be a big improvement.
  10. This was a nicely executed upgrade. I really like the 750/355 combo. Everything you need with the proper backups. Agree with the above, one of the nicest J panels I’ve seen so far.
  11. Owners are always going to try to convince you the direction they went is the best way. Lots of options these days but I do feel the larger display panels modernize the panel/plane and will continue to do so in the future.
  12. I agree with everything Vance said. I was implying (with my last post) that the sole owner and the partnership participants were each flying 50 hours to keep thing even. Or you could have all the pilots fly 150 hrs per year. My point is/was that if you insured all the pilots in the partnership individually it would probably total a lot more (2-3x) what they are currently paying as a partnership.
  13. Using an example of 50hrs flown by each pilot per year that’s only 4 ish hours per month. That would leave plenty of available time for the other three members to do the same. To me that seems like 4x the risk factor for the plane. Double the price seems fair to me but I have a feeling it’s much lower. I added two named pilots to my policy in the past and it didn’t increase my premium by one penny. In my case I was a higher risk factor than the other two and I understand and appreciate the ability to do so. However, the underwriters are beating up on the older pilots, I feel they should spread the abuse to other areas…
  14. The partnership premiums are IMO way under what they should be. Four pilots flying 200 hrs total should be double the price of a single pilot flying that same number of hours.
  15. I’ve never seen one in the wild that a Garmin dealer installed. Do I think it will be an excellent combo, yes! When and if Avidyne does the work to approve the combo which is why I originally asked if that had occurred without my knowledge. Edit: looks like there are some individuals out there making the combo work. Avidyne I guess has a notation in the certification that approves it for all things a GNS is approved for. Great!
  16. Depending on the condition of the 172 personally I think $160 wet is a crazy good deal close to NY.
  17. I’d sell it in current condition and price accordingly. The individual buying it will make it their own and invest a lot of time and money. The time sitting outside, especially in the PNW is going to be a dealbreaker for a lot of buyers and TKS in a J is not sought after like other models. However, the market is red hot right now so stick a crazy amount on it and see if it moves.
  18. I’m curious how this is a legal install? Did something change that the IFD is certified to use with the gfc? I might need to visit the shop and see if they’ll put a gfc in my ‘63 C.
  19. I would pick up a iota 12v 30 amp power supply if you’re going to be using it often.
  20. I’d put a wtb ad out there. Should be able to find a used ES for 1300-1500. Probably the same price as an upgrade for your 330.
  21. After you get new SS screws buy a stubby philips head and shorten the handle another inch or so. That’ll help against scratching the paint and stripping the screws.
  22. Make sure you clean the panel with the proper solution, I can’t remember their recommendation but some should not be used on the leading edge panel as it attacks the membrane. I think we let ours cure at least 24 hrs as well. $2.5 k for a replacement, I’m glad you didn’t drop another one in the big lake!
  23. I’m a little more concerned about the troubleshooting ability of his mechanic…
  24. Nice write up. Now all the people that keep telling me it’s normal and can’t be fixed have some pictures to refer to. I think I might have two more Mooney shims in the closet as I picked up four when we did it a few years back. If I can find them I’d be happy to forward them to another needy Ovation owner. If you’re close to SW Michigan fly over and I’ll buy you lunch.
  25. I’d personally wait until after the avionics work is done just in case they accidentally run it down. My experience with Gill’s customer service was not good. No follow through on anything after 6 months of back and forth.
