  1. Disappointing reading stuff like this on MS. I guess the paint shops should just start charging an extra surcharge on all Mooney aircraft like some avionics shops do…
  2. I’m curious what MS members are paying to insure their Tesla per year?
  3. No way Musk would buy Mooney. If he gets into the game he’ll buy off some politicians, build a multi billion dollar factory, and design and build a sleek composite aircraft.
  4. I’m still not sure how shops are installing this combination. It’s not an approved interface from Garmin or Avidyne. I feel bad for your situation but I personally feel the shop is at fault if they knowingly installed a gfc unit with an ifd navigator.
  5. I’m glad this Mooney went to you Steve! Have fun upgrading this to your liking.
  6. The panel was lowered late 2003 for the ovation/bravo DX models. The Moritz gauges came out in 1999 and were updated in 2000 when the ovation 2 and the toothpick prop was introduced.
  7. The Ovation can get cold especially for the back seat passengers when running LOP in the winter. I’m in agreement with GB that 20ish ROP is helpful for putting extra heat where it’s needed when flying high. The engine creates more power so the added speed is nice as well.
  8. I’ve noticed a number of Mooney aircraft with a heated prop that add inadvertent tks. A few replace with the slinger, some keep both, but a fair amount keep only the heated prop for protection. Looking at the picture I see the smooth boot of a heated prop not the grooved TKS version.
  9. The best way to save money at this point is to limit the scope of work. Just do the basics related to the panel upgrade you’re planning on. Instead spend the time laying out the panel (many fall short) keeping in mind what changes will occur went things fail down the road.
  10. Come on over to the hangar Roy. We have a 750xi/750 stack you can play with.
  11. For failure modes I’d go with the 275 vs g5 if you want a g3x. This allows a bypass to the gad29b in case that unit fails. The txi w/ eis is going to be substantially more expensive than the g3x w/ eis. Spend some serious time planning out the panel. Flush mounting, layouts, bevels, powder coating, stenciling, and flow. Keep in mind what is covered by the yoke, move things up when you remove the old engine instruments, group switches by function, and remove old radios not needed in the right stack.
  12. The tailpipe connection should have three bolts. Loosen and utilize the adjustment range provided, both rotation and direction. Make sure the hangers are in good condition and the gear door is free from excessive play. Your canopy cover pulls on it which might bring it closer if it has extra movement.
  13. You really helped out cruiser…probably saved him a few thousand in upgrade fees. I feel you regarding used avionics. I still have an entire panel of parts ready to sell, just need to find the time.
  14. Agree, however I think the 100k limit per person is only for passengers…not that 1m is going to go very far…
  15. Going against the recommendations of others I’d just swap out the 530w for the 540. You’ve had the GNS units for awhile so it shouldn’t be hard to deal with different interfaces. Keep for 430 going as a backup as the used values have dropped a good bit making the upgrade more expensive.
  16. This storm system Wednesday night really cleared out the north 40. Almost no activity filling in the vacant spots Thursday and Friday…I was told they won’t fill in until the south 40 is full.
  17. This is one nice ovation from a knowledgeable owner who has spent some real money upgrading and maintaining it.
  18. Not trying to be a doom and gloom guy here but with the way things are going up in price these days I’d lock in a price before they bump it again. It wouldn’t surprise me if a 15-20% jump in price in the next year or two.
  19. edit: Wow, not sure how I missed the other thread…a little late to the party I guess. Smart Glide Smart Glide leverages some of the logic used in the Collier award-winning Autoland system. To determine the airport, the system takes into account runway length/surface type, bank angle/turn radius required, glide ratio, estimated altitude at destination, wind speed/direction, terrain/obstacles and if available via datalink, the reported airport METAR. If no airport is within glide range, the system will alert that to the pilot visually and aurally and automatically engage the GFC 500 or GFC 600 autopilot in IAS mode to pitch the aircraft to best glide speed and roll mode to level the wings.
  20. Without a doubt get a reman or new. Keep flying the plane until you get the shipping notification. Life’s too short to mess around with a shop for months on end.
  21. To me it sounds like he liked to fly with 3 passengers often. Too bad he didn’t keep the 210, it might have saved his bacon in this case. I really don’t like the character of the pilot brought up so soon in a devastating crash like this…
  22. Thursday morning early is normally a good time to arrive with a good chunk of people leaving Wednesday night. I use a mid sized battery (odyssey 925) in a small soft cooler w/ charger. I just leave it charging at the bathhouse during the day and carry it back to the tent at night. Provides plenty of power throughout the night. Hasn’t disappeared yet, after almost a decade of using it.
  23. I think the situational awareness of synthetic vision and the larger display of everything (vs the 275/Aspen/g5) is beneficial. Also using a portion of the larger displays to show mfd information is advantageous especially with the radio stack so far over on the bonanza. Weather, traffic, engine data, and plates would be very readable right in front on a larger screen. IMO if you are planning on a new panel, not exactly cheap on the older A36’s, really think long and hard about how you want the panel set up. It makes all the difference in the final product and many shops fall short in that area.
  24. Any pictures of the panel? I’m a strong advocate for a large flat panel. You can easily keep your (important) steam gauges to backup a g3x display just like most of the Mooney gx models use. Compared to the total cost of upgrading a panel the upgrade to the g3x is a non event. If I was overhauling your panel on the cheap I’d add to your 375…a garmin 255, 225, 10inch g3x with eis, gfc500. I’d also find a used pma8000 and lifesaver AI with a battery backup to combine with your current ASI and altimeter for backup instrumentation. A flush mount iPad mini might look nice where the old engine instruments are located On the opposite end of the spectrum you could add a 10 inch txi, a couple 750’s,and a gfc600. If you’re dead set on keeping the six pack I’d spring for the 275’s.
