As someone else pointed out, I would head twords Page, AZ (KPGA) instead of KRIF and then work twords Camarillo, CA (KCMA) via south of Vegas and then the Palmdale (PMD) VORTAC (staying clear of restricted airspace near Vegas and Edwards AFB). Then you are set up for going north or south along the coast of CA. I am based out of KTSP.

Last time I flew there I took a few pics of the camping area and the airport from the air.. I agree with you, Columbia and Kern Valley would be too hot this time of year. This is one of my favorite places to fly to. The pier at Pismo Beach is about a 2 mile walk or a short uber ride.

Thanks for the Alpine county point out - I'll have to give it and the hike a go. I've been to Columbia and like it as well.

I hope to go to the fly in. It would be my first Mooney event. Maybe Tehachapi (KTSP) could be a future fly in location It is an easy walk to some of the restaurants from the airport.
