  1. I set up a monthly Paypal recurring payment of $1 as I forgot to remake my donation since last time. Will that count?
  2. I finally designed a vertical stabilizer suction RAM mount that is strong enough and easy to remove. Try it out today and took a video using the Insta360 camera during our three-ship formation. I could turn on and off the camera using a Bluetooth remote control during flight. Today is very bumpy but the mount held very well.
  3. We all need to get together and stop this. It might be your airport next. Please send out a letter to these folks.Regards,---Tomorrow night (i.e. 6/16), a proposal to implement landing fees at the Torrance airport will come before the Council for consideration. This was not part of the original staff proposed budget revision and was added last Tuesday by one Councilmember as part of an attempt to close the City’s COVID-related budget shortage. While the details are still lacking, it appears there would be an approximately $12-15 landing fee imposed upon fixed wing aircraft only, for both aircraft stationed at KTOA and transient aircraft. If you would like to voice your opinion on this prior to the Council meeting Tuesday evening, you may contact the Torrance City Council using the following email addresses. Alternatively, you may also call in to speak under item 9am of the 7pm meeting at 310-618-2404.PFurey@TorranceCA.GovHAshcraft@TorranceCA.GovGChen@TorranceCA.govTGoodrich@TorranceCA.GovMGriffiths@TorranceCA.GovSKalani@TorranceCA.GovAMattucci@TorranceCA.GovCouncilmeetingpubliccomment@torranceca.govSincerely,Torrance Councilmember Tim Goodrich
  4. I am a immigrant from Taiwan and live in the States for almost 30 years. Therefore, I have access to Mandarin speaking news from friends and families. Taiwan has a democratic government and becomes the model of fighting CV19. This 24 million people nation (live in 19K sq miles island) was originally estimated to be the second highest risky place from CV19 pandemic in the early this year because it's not far from the mainland China and it had daily flight to Wuhan city until Feb 6, 2020. If you follow the news you know so far Taiwan have merely less than 400 people infected and only 1 death. Taiwan is excluded from WHO because of China's influence (and ICAO,....etc.). When the government sent 2 doctors to Wuhan in December 19 when they heard a rumor, they immediately know something's going on. They sent warning letter to WHO but being ignored. Taiwan activated the pandemic prevention act (passed the legislation after SARS) on Jan 5 by detecting people's temperature on every airport and enforce self quarantine at home for the suspicious cases. Enough of the detail. You might ask, what's the condition today in Taiwan? There is no lock down and most of the businesses are still open. But there is wearing face mask enforcement in the public transportation system and going to the hospitals. There's social distancing rule. Despite all the restaurants and businesses are still open and everyone goes to work, it still impact the service industries very bad. From the interviews I watched, there's about 40 to 50% decrease in restaurant businesses. Here is a case happen 3 days ago in Taiwan. Please think about it if you like to take this kind of "privacy lost during abnormal time"? There was a warship returned from a 30 days mission several days ago. Taiwan DOD did not check the soldiers' well being and allow them to go home. And it turned out there're 30 confirmed cases and 70 suspected cases among the sailors. About 2 days ago, there're 200,000 people in Taiwan receiving a text message saying that they might be in the closed proximity of these sailors in the past several days. Just take extra caution if they felt unwillingness, they can call the CV19 hotline 1922 for the help (Taiwan has the world best healthcare system and the full healthcare insurance). The data was derived by the big data collected by the wireless providers and was promptly used to derive the resulting cellphone numbers for sending the text message. TV news immediately questioned the president about the encroachment of the privacy. President's response was "Because of the emergency situation, the information was used due to the abnormal time. Taiwan has the pandemic legislation currently in effect which authorizes the head of CDC make such decision to use this data.". And later survey shows the citizen approves this as people rather receive this text message than implement a lock down, which impact the freedom and economy greatly. I agree we should do it here if that's an option. Anyway the wireless providers already have the same data of our where-about if you carry a cellphone. (That's how they can send the calls to you while you moving around). But there's an on-going development in the US better than using the cellphone data and sending the text messages; I heard Apple and Google are building a Bluetooth warning app in their cellphone O/S. When one near a known CV19 patient, the cellphone will provide a warn without reveal your personal identity or the patient's identity. I hope this invention can deploy soon and help to restore our normal life. But again, do you really think your where-about is not collected when you carry a cellphone? I am not saying we should give up our rights but instead, we should use it smartly in situation like today. Google and Apple actually already have your data all the time and they sell to their affiliates. Instead of selling to affiliates without my consent, I rather use it to protect my freedom to go out, my freedom to work and protect the economy. My $0.02
  5. Don't park your Mooney in front of an armed warbird. https://theaviationist.com/2020/04/18/watch-rocket-accidentally-fired-by-chadian-air-force-su-25-frogfoot-nearly-hits-french-c-130h-at-ndjamena-airport/?fbclid=IwAR34V9fl1qfadDVq2oDJ79D61Q4x6XG1DdsQuOWTcCEPXmXXpIZeHqWCRpA
  6. You guys might want to read the NTSB's final report of another deadly accident from the Spruce Creek "Gaggle Flight Formation Group", which released in the September of last year. I think it's time to serious look into the potential safety issues pointed out by this final report (in the additional information section). https://app.ntsb.gov/pdfgenerator/ReportGeneratorFile.ashx?EventID=20170401X94926&AKey=1&RType=HTML&IType=FA
  7. Very sad to see this happen. My condolence to friends and families of those involved. Flying formation with dissimilar aircraft a lead need to spent extra time discussing all aspects of the issues in the briefing such as climbing performance, approach speed and cruising speed...etc. I know a friend who is actively involved with the Spruce Creek formation group. They fly formation in dissimilar aircraft all the time. I guess a briefing may not be as detail since they've done that for so long. Not sure if the lead used the briefing checklist. The RTB, recovery and landing must be discussed during a briefing if a checklist is used. This is a reminder of those whom flying formation a detailed briefing is always needed before a flight. And moreover, a detailed debrief is always needed after each flight as well. Do not skip a debriefing because each flight can have its own unique saturation that didn't happen before. A detailed debriefing makes everyone involved got something to learn from. So the concerns can be addressed on the next flight.
  8. Unfortunately, I did not take any before-and-after pictures. I realized I did not take pictures after I already teared down the interior. So I did not bother to take the "after" when it was done. But you can imagine most of my panels near the windows were crumble and cracked, discolored and looked really old. The screws were all oxidised. The seat fabric were discolored on some area. headliners also cracked in some corner. The carpet shrink and exposed the metal floor at the rare end. Now it looks new, great carpet and shining screws. Milky windows now becomes extremely clear. The air louvers converted from 5 inch plates to modern nipple style outlet and worked really well.
  9. I do not agree. VNY / BUR is a very busy airspace. Moreover, VNY miss approach intercepts BUR RWY8 localizer. The following screenshot is within the time controller repeatedly issuing the miss approach instructions. You can see 777WP flying toward a C750 just took off from BUR. I think that was the reason why when the pilot did not readback and the controller had to repeat. But once the controller realized 777WP was about to be out of control, he immediately went into helping mode to help the pilot. But it was too late. Added: Here is another screenshot on 14:47 moment before he crashed. You can see BUR was extremely busy. A Global Express GLEX just departed while SWA about to land. A Skywest was lineup and wait for taking off at BUR. (The yellow plane on the left side was 777WP). Added: Here is the link to playback the last a couple minutes of the flight. https://www.flightradar24.com/2020-03-13/21:42/12x/N777WP/242cb4f9
  10. I just recently completed the refurbish of my Mooney's interior, including patching cracked plastic panels, re-painting, redo the edge trim and installed with all new sheet metal screws. I also replaced the carpet and replaced the seat cover from fabric to Vinyl leather, as well as replace some side windows. It took me about 3 months ( less than 10 weekends) including took them off, planning, waiting on goods, patching and painting plastics and installation.Bruce Jaeger from jaegeraviation.com helped me greatly. Without his help and some of his unique products, I don't think I would be able to successfully accomplished all by myself. He answered all my questions from numerous emails tirelessly (even if you don't order his product). So feel free to give him a call and emails.I used some of his unique products that I was not able to find anywhere else (and reasonable priced):(1) silicon edge trim and adhesive -- very beautiful and replace my old, stiff edge trims.(2) color match painted sheet metal screws -- I use them around the windows.(3) Mooney ceiling vent louver rebuild kits -- without that, my project will be a total failure since I broken them when I removed the headliner and no one else sells any replacement parts.(4) Thick 3M alumina tapes and plastic panel patch pieces -- I used them to repair cracks and reinforce the weak area of the plastic panels.(5) His repair instruction tips PDF (free)He has other stuffs beside what I've used. Please see his web page and talk to him. Here is some of my essential repair and painting steps and products that I use.Clean up plastics: Remove side padding for upholstery wrap leather. (Mooney has side paddings glue on top of plastic panels) Scrapping the old glue. Clean up the remaining glue and dust using 3M 38983 and the following. Use the following 2 from Aircraft Spruce Qty Ship B/O Item Unit Price Total Price 1 0 1 09-03575 SEM VINYL PREP 16 OZ AEROSOL 17.850 17.85 1 0 1 09-03588 SEM AEROSPACE SOAP 15 OZ 16.500 16.50 Repair Plastic Panels: Repair with 3M thick alumina tape (and plastic plates if needed, all purchased from Bruce), reinforce the back of weak area by applying 3M EzSand or USC Flexible Glaze, surface fixed with smearing USC Flexible Glaze, then light sanding after dry. Note that 3M EzSand is a flexible epoxy for bumper repairing (also recommended by Bruce). But I found the USC Garage Flexible Glaze is a better product because it's color is almost white (instead of EzSand dark-grey), and it is much cheaper and much easier to mix. This is the latest epoxy technology for plastic bumper repairs. I believe Bruce now will recommend this one instead of 3M EzSand after read my feedback to him and trial himself. USC Garage bumper repair instruction video Parts: USC Garage Flexible Glaze can be purchased from many online auto-paint stores. About $15 a bag. You won't need more than 2 bags. 3M EzSand price is vary greatly. I purchased 650ml from eBay for only $30 (normally over $100) Epoxy mixing board - I found the following mixing broad the best one. Clean Sheets Superior Mixing Pad (12x12) - 100 Disposable Sheets For Toughest Job Sold by: MetaRetail (Amazon) Epoxy Mixing stick: Local Ace Hardware (plastic sticks in a bag 20 for $3. Flexible Epoxy blazes: you may or may not need them. You can get them from Amazon. Silicon or Vinyl gloves from Harborfrieght Sand papers of 100, 250. Both regular and for the electric sanders. Painting: Clean the surface before paint Bulldog adhesion promoter -- base primer (see instruction on the cane... I start spray the SEM paint 7 minutes after apply promoter) Apply SEM 39853 (video) (texture or Dupli-Color TSP100 Grey and White Trunk Paint.. https://www.ss396.com/ x2 ) This is for adding texture needed after surface repair because after sanding, the surface of the repaired area is smooth. I have to redo the texture of the entire area. I used Dupli-Color TSP100 (recommended by Bruce) because SEM39853 is black color. According to Bruce, SEM39853 will be very hard to cover it up. Dry and sand (pattern table in video) - (skipped sanding in my case) Apply SEM Super White 15103 (JB Tools x 6 ). Note that Super White is not really white-white but vanilla color (similar to what the original color of my panel) Protective coat - Dupli-Color HWP106 Wheel Matte Clearcoat. -- for UV protection. It can be optional. Silicon or Vinyl gloves, from Harborfrieght Bench Brush from Harborfreight for cleaning (also used pressure air) P95 Maintenance-Free Dual Cartridge Respirator from Harborfreight. Mask tapes and work paper roll from HomeDepot Old Panel Installation Tips: Get the 2 thinnest drill bits, such as the #6 screws' guide drill bit 7/64 or less. Hold the panel on to the fuselage while use the thinnest drill bit to poke into the existing screw hole on the plastic and find the underlying hole on the fuselage. Once found it, keep the drill bit there and use another drill bit do the same thing on the other side of panel until both are aligned. Now you have easy time to put all the screws into each hole using a electric screwdriver. BE VERY CAREFUL, NOT tight it up too much or it can crack the plastic. I use the electric driver to tight each screw to 90%, then tight it by hand using regular screwdriver. Screws, donut washers for plastic purchased from Aircraftspruce. I later on found them also at Ace hardware, much cheaper. Painted screws from Jaeger Aviation (Bruce). Those are specially made and imported from Taiwan. Carpet Remove old carpet and need plastic scrapping the remaining glue using Scraper with plastic blades (Amazon), and 3M 38983 adhesive remover. When put on the new carpet, I use 3M High Strength 90 Spray Adhesive (from HomeDepot) to glue the carpet Carpet: I got it from https://www.airtexinteriors.com/catalogue/carpets.php Airtex Interios Plastic scraper: I got it from Amazon. -- 2 Pack Razor Blade Scrapers + 100 Pack Plastic Replacement Blades Stickers Decals Paint Labels Scraper Removal Tool for Auto Window Glass Tint Vinyl Tool NO Scratched Side Window I ordered from http://www.glapinc.com Note that windshield can only be installed by a A&P. Seat Replace with Vinyl leather using local automobile upholstery shop. The certified material can be purchased from a online shop or, if you elect to use the materials from a local shop, You can get an instructions from Bruce of how to send to a burn test agency in order to pass FAA requirements. Note that I add a side pocket on each of the front seat on the side of between 2 seats (on the seat back). This allow me to put in the oxygen bottle and other stuff I need. It is a very useful improvement when doing seats. The above is a simplified version of my refurbish log. I hope this helps.
