  1. My first annual... and in my hanger! Why let your mistress / baby go anywhere else for an inspection. Sure the hanger got dirty... but my baby got a clean bill of health and that's all that matters in my book!
  2. +1... The tug gets it after my pail that is placed under the gascolator... after that, the avgas goes into my dirt-bike tank for desert season storage.
  3. Can't help except to provide a shout out that PAR's are awesome. I got to do one into KNZY--Naval Air Station North Island, CA--during my PPL training. The approach was to minimums with my instructor, while I was under the hood. I now know where to go in SOCAL if I get stuck in the soup as a VFR pilot!
  4. So, what happens when one selects the down rocker on the flight computer with the PFD's? I would think holding the rocker down would allow for a rapid fire controller direction for a 500fpm descent with the right hand. The left hand could switch the heading mode and twist the bug if there is a simultaneous heading change. If not the left hand can start to dial in the flight plan on the iPad on the yoke or the GTN while you lay across your passenger's lap . Once the plan is dialed in... can you not release the down rocker and let the avionics take over? Pardon my ignorance, as I don't have a fancy panel yet... Although, I'm getting a G5 put in and moving the KAP-150's KG-258 to the turn coordinator spot in two weeks.
  5. I've got two as well... I guess I should hand the other 8 out to my buddy airplane owners, as I had to buy the 10 pack to get black.
  6. I am VERY interested to hear what is the quote you get. +1 @Diesel 10
  7. Just renewed my insurance through Falcon for $1389. No reduction in price and my carrier changed from Starr to Global Aerospace. A nice surprise was free Global Breakdown Assistance with SavvyAviation...
  8. My 2¢... I recently experienced vacuum failure on a VFR flight. To get back in the air quickly, I CB'd out with an overhauled Rapco dry air pump on the advice of my trusty A&P. While observing the failed AI and TC bouncing around due to turbulence, I know that I don't ever want to be partial panel and relying on the TC in IMC. I plan on starting my instrument rating in the very near future and I am now collecting quotes to add a G5. Since I have the KAP-150, I need to keep the vacuum pump but according to the G5 install guide--verified by my friendly avionics install shop--the KG-258 AI can move down and replace the TC. I can then have the G5 installed in the primary location of the AI. I then get solid state AI, non-primary supplemental air data, and turn coordination right in front of me. Sure I don't get to remove the vacuum pump but I get a lot more situational awareness, keep the autopilot fed, while having two independently powered AI's in the airplane. In a visually challenged world that is about to become my future, I can't think of a better alternative for a CB price... First quote received: $4218 G5 = $2204 Install labor 16 hours = $1680 Taxes = $334 Would pull the trigger but they can't start until March, thanks to all the ADS-B holdouts and current rebate!
  9. They do... it is a plate on the cap side of the filter. If you cut the filter and pull the filter out, you'll see the plate that easily separates from the metal end of the filter. Next time I change my oil--I just changed it two hours ago--I'll take a picture if you can't find it.
  10. Richard @Skates97, when is yours going in? I'm intrigued by the concept and the cost of installation... I am currently considering a G5 as my primary--AI--in my field of view and moving my KG-258--KAP-150 AI--down to the turn and bank (T&B) spot for $3k more than the AV-20-S. The G5 would provide primary attitude, T&B, rate of turn, coordination, long with supplemental airspeed, altitude, heading, coordination, etc... The KG-258 would continue to provide primary AI information, while driving the KAP-150 autopilot. I'm asking because I recently lost my attitude indicator due to a vacuum pump failure in VFR conditions... I never want to experience that failure in IMC, as I'm not sure if I would have survived the outcome, as it was a turbulent flight and my T&B was all over the place. The AV-20-S is only certified as a supplemental instrument, meaning that it can't be utilized for primary anything. I'm a nerd with too many devices and I have several that can provide the same functions as the AV-20-S in a non-supplemental way. So I guess my question is what is the "so what" of a AV-20S installation. The G5 is $2200 as an AI with my recent quote of 16 hours @$105 per hour for installation. Interested in the AV's install cost...
  11. I'm not one to move the propeller on a whim and willy nilly style but I do need to move it to move the airplane. Putting it in the hanger or its parking spot with either the tow bar or the power tow the prop needs to be out of the way and I put it horizontal on the back side of the compression stroke. But I do so with extreme caution and rotate it backwards. My A&P told me the engine cannot fire when rotated backwards and I've seen the same comments here on MS. Maybe another A&P will confirm...
  12. Don, my condolences and thoughts are with you and yours.
  13. I bought the J with a GTN-650 installed. I was running an Android Tab A 9.*" with Avare for free. The Tab A was mounted to the yoke with a RAM mount and I was using a Statux for ADS-B in for $130 in hardware including mounts. That combo was amazing from a capability standpoint but I was still discovering traffic that was intentionally being hidden because the J wasn't ADS-B out. Last year I installed a GTX345 and FS510 and love the added functionality. I haven't observed traffic in the air that wasn't displayed on the iPad, since becoming out capable. For a tablet, I'm currently running an iPad Pro 9.7--cellular--on the yoke with a magnetic mount and it is superb. I get traffic, have a backup AHRS, can push and pull flightplans and changes, push database updates to the GTN, etc... It also has a GPS receiver that comes with the cellular version in case the 650 goes away. I don't pay for cellular service on it but find the functionality of the yoke mounted iPad amazing. The magnetic mount allows me to pull the devices off the yokes to further refine button pushes or to place them on my knee for writing stuff down. I keep the Tab A with Avare updated as a backup to the iPad. I also keep and Garmin Pilot and Avare up to date on my Android phone for even more redundancy. I'd just like to highlight that the Galaxy Tab A with Avare is a chart solution with a GPS receiver for under $200. Regarding storage capacity... I'm a nerd and like as much as I can get on a device. With the iPad, I bought and will buy the most that it will come with it as I never know what will end up on the device. Apple sure knows how to extract money from a pocket... Storage is usually not worrisome on android devices because they usually come with expandable storage and microSD cards are cheap.
  14. My wife just gave this to me for my 50th birthday last weekend, so I don't need one. The artist even manged to get my face into the window. Here are a couple of my favorite pictures that you can use if you so desire...
  15. You are good until 2020 and then you can't get into a mode C veil... I had air on ground errors after my GTX-345 install and the shop my knew exactly what was wrong and told me how to fix it. Taxi slower than molasses... or fire up the transponder in the runup area. Have you informed your shop? They may already know how to help.
  16. I had less time than you and it was expensive... it did go down quite a bit after the first year and 80 hours. I only needed 5 hours of dual though, so things may have changed. Good luck in your acquisition!
  17. Personally I use the human heat exchange unit, otherwise known as sweat to stay somewhat cool. I'd probably sweat more if I had to load the airplane full of ice before the preflight even though it would feel good once settled in the cabin.
  18. That sounds GREAT! Our CFI tour guide warned about squirrelly winds due to the surrounding trees, so have your game face on. KFFA is in excellent shape and the parking ramp and pilot area is nicely done. I'd definitely land there for sure and will probably do the same cross country in a few years. On the ground at KFFA, you will be super close to the monument and don't have to worry about driving and the traffic. I highly recommend staying for a few days for the great seafood! We ran out of time to try all of the restaurants.
  19. It wasn't today... or me at the controls but it was fun to vacation on the outer banks in North Carolina for the past two weeks! Flying around the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills and KFFA is a must do!
  20. Great video... Flight management at its best. Now what did you do with your G500? @Rmag Those low budget... or cheap bastard...s would like to know.
  21. Yes... I inadvertently deleted one of my threads... it was too easy.
  22. + 1... except I generally pull throttle closed on shutdown. My second step in the above is to add 1/4" of throttle. Fires up every time...
