  1. Interested in the damage when you get the quote...
  2. I received this ominous note from my insurance carrier. This is following an increase from last year. Looks like it's going to be another tough year of increased premiums. Guess I'm going to have to start shopping around a bit more.
  3. I hope you don't have to buy another VR headset. I've read that MS will open up other VR headset support to most existing headsets today about a month after the G2 launch. Gotta hate teaming agreements amongst technology corporations. That's one of the reasons I haven't invested in VR. One, the offerings are not mature enough and they are very proprietary. Besides that, I'm not really ready to start investing in puke bags sitting in my virtual cockpit.
  4. +1 for lemon Pledge. Received Plexus as a gift but don't see much difference between it and good ole fashioned lemon Pledge.
  5. I'm preparing to start a new PC build that will hopefully last the next ten years. I'm coming from an I7-2600K, Nvidia GTX980, 16GB of RAM, 3X250GB SSD's in RAID 5 that I purpose built in 2010. The GPU has been updated three times and the PC and still runs FSX Steam Edition flawlessly. I also do a lot of photo editing and video rendering and it just takes far too long these days, so it's time to pass the HW on to the wife, which is still overkill for her use cases. I'm considering an AMD 3970X Threadripper, Nvidia RTX3080--release date is this September--, 64GB of RAM, Striped M.2 or M.4 SSD's, and possibly an Optane disk as a photo or video scratch disk. Should drive MSFS 2020 well. My only question is 3970X vs the 3990X. AMD is killing Intel at the moment. The 3990X is so powerful it is limited by Operating Systems.
  6. Yes. https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/07/30/microsoft-flight-simulator-steam-track-ir-and-vr-support/
  7. Welcome aboard! I'm partial to a J but if it was only me it would be an E. Happy hunting...
  8. @wingtipwalker, I ordered both to do the plane but wanted to see how they worked on my car first. ONR was great and cleaned the car but the paint still felt rough when running my hand across the paint. I used a clay bar with ONR as lubricant and the paint felt very smooth afterwards but it did take several days to do a small car. After applying the C2V3, the paint is like glass and looks new minus the big chips. Several scratches that were easily noticeable are well hidden now. I recommend getting all of the contaminates out of the paint before applying C2V3. I haven't started working on the plane yet, as I have it outside at the moment but when I get her back in the hanger, I'll be following the same process as I did with the car. I'll try to capture some before and after pictures.
  9. I thought a pair of G5's could drive a KFC or KAP 150 since Garmin's introduction of the GAD 29B. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/aviation/third-party-autopilot-support-for-g5-expanded/ It's an old article but there are several avionics shops that advertises a G5, GMU 11, and GAD 29B DG/HSI combo that supports many third party autopilots. BK's KAP/KFC 150 autopilots are on the list. What am I missing?
  10. Let me know when listed. Maybe you'll get a sell. I'm specifically interested in the flight computer, as mine was repaired not too long ago but is still a little buggy.
  11. @Shawn26, What are you doing with the KAP-150 once removed? I might be interested in some of the components.
  12. Replaced my Turn Coordinator with one G5. Do you have your Turn Coordinator running an autopilot? If not, I don't see why you can't remove it.
  13. Short answer is yes it can be installed but you need an A&P to sign it off and make a log book entry, as tools are required. You may be able to install it under an A&P's supervision if you can find one willing.
  14. I have the 11" 512MB iPad Pro cellular version and it sits on the yoke via a magnet mount. The iPad is primarily used in my flight bag but I use it for considerably more than that, hence the pro version. I don't have the iPad on a cellular plan but the cellular version comes with a GPS sensor, which comes in helpful. I use my Verizon Galaxy S105g Android phone as a hotspot and run Avare on it, so I have the best of both worlds with a completely independent flight chart backup that is 100% FREE. With Verizon, I've never been without connectivity and that includes hotspot services. My J has a Flight Stream 510 and GTX345, so database concierge works to keep the GTN610 up to date and I have traffic and weather on my yoke, which is very informative. With my old eyes, I would have a tough time using smaller devices.
  15. @Vance Harral, great conversation starter. I fuel my J and continually find myself carefully putting my fuel caps on the wing next to the hole, which I am sure is damaging paint on the wing and cap. Off-topic but I stumbled onto a post regarding protecting wings during annual with carpet. That prompted me to buy several 9' carpet runners to place on each wing and elevator during annual to keep tools, screws, and other annual related items in a convenient location while protecting the paint. Back on topic, my first thoughts after reading your first post was about using grill mats--https://www.amazon.com/CHERAINTI-Grill-Mat-Non-Stick-Resistant/dp/B071RRCLMF/ref=sr_1_5?crid=32QJJO9A73ID8&dchild=1&keywords=bbq+baking+mats&qid=1589428099&s=home-garden&sprefix=bbq+baking+%2Cgarden%2C188&sr=1-5--such as this. I have smaller mats at home and they are thin, temperature stable and resilient to grease. They are light, easy to clean and roll up for easy storage. Thanks to @carusoam, I'll have to investigate the grill mats electrical and fuel absorption properties but they sure look like an electrical insulator to me. @gsxrpilot and @MooneyMitch, nice pictures of products you find valuable. Wouldn't rotating your mats 180° also help with spillage? It's been my accidental over exuberance in getting every last drop in the tank that I've observed that fuel flows towards the tail when the tank is overfilled.
  16. Although you are looking for pre-J's, don't count out the J or K. I was looking at F's before I adhered to advice to go after the most plane I could afford, that meets my mission. My mission is less than 300NM, 1 soul, fast... occasional 2 maybe 3 souls greater than 500NM... which led me to my J. Happy to demo, although the plane is configured for two and may be a touch dirty. Paul @kortopates mentioned an F is not too far away from a J and can even come close with speed mods, so a demo will show you what an F would look/feel like on the ground. The difference would be speed mod related and you could start from a J demo. Currently I'm tied down at French Valley--F70--which is closed until Thursday for runway improvements, hence the dirtiness. I'm planning on a flight to and from Gillespie Field--KSEE--on Friday and can stop in KCRQ on the way back if y'all are interested. Send me a PM to coordinate and let me know if I need to put a back seat in to accommodate three. Also, don't freak out if I show up with a face mask, rubber gloves and a grip of sanitizer.
  17. How about sharing links to those studies, so the pro's can digest the content... The good thing about academia, is that studies are submitted for peer review. If they survive that, they can be pretty much taken as fact even though the research may be funded by an undesirable source, just like JHU was easily dismissed earlier in this lively discussion.
  18. Great Idea @Ross Taylor. Why not take pictures while you are probing the voids of M20E inner-space... https://www.amazon.com/Vividia-Ablescope-VA-400-Borescope-Articulating/dp/B00GY7C9ZW It's also a great tool to take pictures of valves when the spark plugs are out. Better than an compression test from what I've been told. Have fun, Jon
  19. Today 57557 had to come out of its hangar quarantine because its pilot is quarantined at home close to French Valley Airport (F70). She will have to endure the harsh outdoor elements but at least she can count on more frequent love and attention in the form of operation. She is comforted in the fact that she has her own spot, is 6' apart from other aviation contaminated souls, and is wearing a custom fitted mask.
  20. Hmm. Some of @PT20J's sources are media but most aren't. Leaving out CNN and Wired as media sources, why are you discounting other sources of information? Snopes - When misinformation obscures the truth and readers don’t know what to trust, Snopes.com’s fact checking and original, investigative reporting lights the way to evidence-based and contextualized analysis. 21. +1 - Holds my 11" iPad Pro well in portrait mode. I do have to remove the iPad from its case but that takes less than 10 seconds.
  22. What avionics does your 252 have? Garmin? Avidyne? That may help steer the conversation. As others have mentioned Garmin Pilot works great with Garmin but not so much with other products other than ForeFlight. +1 on the quote above from Amelia. I also got back into flying after a long hiatus and used Avare for FREE using a cheap Android tablet that I bought for $128 at Costco. I subsequently purchased my J that had a GTN-650. I tried both ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot via free trials on an iPad and they were both good but were not as intuitive in my opinion as Avare, so I went back to Avare. I am now flying behind Garmin Pilot--I personally find it more intuitive than FF--on an iPad Pro because I now have a FlightStream 510 and GTX-345 for flight plan transfer, database concierge, traffic and weather; all slick features and account for a tremendous amount of SA and capability on the yoke. I can push flight plan updates from either the 650 or iPad. In turbulence, I can pull the iPad off the yoke, modify the flight plan and push it back to the 650. From what I understand, both GP and FF can do this with Garmin avionics. I've heard that Avidyne works with both apps as well but I have no experience with an IFD navigator or Aspen PFD/MFD. BTW, I still fly with Avare as a backup on my Android phone and tablet. Avare is free except for the cost of a device and also has geo-referenced taxi diagrams and approach plates, which FF and GP will up charge for. My four year old 9" Android tablet running Avare is a great backup and it's more than paid for itself in FF and GP upgrades for geo-referenced plates and diagrams. Just my 2¢
