  1. Back when I was flying for the regionals, I was amazed at the debt some of my copilots told me that they had from places like Embry Riddle. Some as high as $150k, for a damned aviation degree. And this was a decade ago! Can't imagine what it peaks at now. Horrible waste of money.
  2. Even turbulence would have to be pretty extreme to cause damage. Your airplane is tougher than you think it is.
  3. I'm down at the lowly tiedowns at P-68, next to the v-tail Bonanza. If you see me out there, stop and say hi! I'm number 33 on the wait list to get one of those T-hangars.
  4. If I had to work on my plane, I'd probably just sell it.
  5. John Deakin was always fond of pointing out that the airplanes that seem to last the longest with the fewest problems are those that are rode hard and often. Think of all those GA airplanes beaten to hell in thunderstorms for decades flying canceled checks through the worst possible weather. They've got so many hours on them you might as well not even count. Rain won't hurt an airplane. Definitely gives it a free bath, though. So I like the rain.
  6. I'm going to have a local A&P take a look at the wiring, and probably go ahead and switch out the light to an LED while I'm at it. I figure Aircraft Spruce probably has one, and they're right on the field here at FFC.
  7. My new (to me) M20C has all of the lights and the fuel boost pump on the same "aux bus" breaker. Twice now that breaker has popped and refused to reset. Tonight I ended up having to land with no landing lights, something I haven't done in 15 years. Needless to say it was not a pretty landing. Would I be correct in thinking that the fuel boost pump must be drawing too much of a load and overheating the breaker? The POH says to land with the pump on, but I'm wondering if maybe I should ignore that advice. Thoughts?
  8. Um, yeah, I think I'll keep eating the pizza and try the T handle idea.
  9. That's an excellent idea, actually. Thanks!
  10. That fuel selector is the only thing so far I don't like about my C. You've got to be a female gymnast to be able to do the contortions to reach that damned thing.
  11. The reason college is so expensive is because we've made it too easy for everyone to have access to money to attend it. When people can borrow money for it, regardless of creditworthiness, then the supply and demand forces get all screwed up.
  12. I'd rather stay down at 11,000. I'm not paying those kinds of crazy maintenance bills until I upgrade to something pressurized.
  13. Damn, I wouldn't even like three "large" people crammed into my plane, let alone five.
  14. Gotcha. I don't have an HSI even for my GPS feed, so it's the same old school CDI either way for me.
  15. I'm not sure of the need to practice VORs. If you can track a localizer course, you can track a VOR course. All you add is "dive and drive" for the altitude. Not a big deal.
  16. Sorry, just real estate and property management.
  17. Yeah, I'm too lazy to wash my own car, so I'm definitely not doing work on my plane. I'm not a member of the cheap bastard club, but I'm a charter member of the lazy bastard club.
  18. Yes, but how are on-site prices at HND compared to LAS? Rental cars are usually dirt cheap at LAS. I suspect that they're charging a premium for them at an outlying airport. I'd be interested in knowing for sure, though, because I'll be flying out to Vegas for a week this fall.
  19. Anybody ever use this company to work on your Mooney for basic maintenance/repair issues? They're not a MSC, but they're right at my home airport, and I need to get a few small things done that weren't covered by the purchase agreement I had with the seller (carb heat knob sticks, stripped threads on a tiedown eyelet, that sort of stuff). Do I really need to take the plane to a MSC for small issues like this, or should I be fine with someone else? Not just new to Mooney, new to owning any airplane at all, so I'm learning as I go here.
  20. I'm usually in the office during weekdays, but if you're coming down on a Saturday, let me know!
  21. I'm used to DC9 seats, which are horrendous for anything over an hour, so I'm probably not the best judge. I haven't taken it on anything over two hours yet, but had no complaints so far.
  22. Hmm, I hadn't even thought of naming it. That'll take some thought!
  23. I'm still getting used to not flaring at 50 feet, so it'll be a little while until I feel comfortable enough to land on grass again. Look forward to coming down there, though.
  24. I don't really know much about it. I'll look into it, though. I've never been to Oshkosh, so I do have an interest in going.
