  1.  I have too many audio panels on the shelf.  The PMA450,8000B and SL15 are new old stock, complete with install kits. The PMA8000B and PMA450 are forward compatible with the PMA450C and various Garmin audio panels. The SL15 is still a very nice audio panel and is a nice way of adding a stereo audio panel with intercom to an existing KMA24 audio panel.  I have a guy that can make a harness for the intercom side.  The PMA7000 is in excellent condition, has the DRAWS (digital recorded audio warning system?) that can give voice annunciations like 'check engine' 'check vacuum' etc.  This was in my Mooney, kinda neat, but will take some figuring out how to connect.

Can sell with or without install kits, so priced at US$1000 through US$1600.

I also have Approach Systems hub and cables to go with these.

Send me a PM and let me know which you prefer.

These new ones should drop-in for all of the modern long bodies.

I wish I had these new ones instead of the first-gen I installed!  Those were ~$2500 a couple of years ago for me.  This new version looks fantastic.

Me too, if it wasn't for all the holes and permanent rivets I used I'd consider upgrading.  You did nut plates, so go for it?  Aerodon

  3. There are several connectors in the circuit from the avionics relay to the ground.  If any one of them were open or intermittent then the switch would not ground and the avionics would stay on.

Some switches have 2 poles, only one in use.  Swap the ires over to the other side?

But if there is a fault in the small control relay, this could provide an alternate path to ground to hold the avionics relay in the on position.

And the avionics relay could be sticking.

I just got some updated avionics and along with it a new weight and balance.  I am not thrilled by how forward the CG is on my M20J. It is useable, but I generally will need to throw a couple cases of oil in the back, especially when I am flying solo.  I want to find some kind of useful avionic that installs in the tailcone to move the CG aft. Any ideas?

Are you familiar with the Charlie Weights on a 231/252?  Is there a shelf and holes pre-drilled into the aft bulkhead an a M20J?  Much as I don't like adding useless weight, this is a very effective way of fine tuning your CG.

And for the people contemplating upgrades - consider remote boxes for transponder, traffic, stormscope etc., especially if you already have the avionics shelf in the back.  Not only does it help your CG, I think it makes the overall installation easier because things are not as cramped behind the panel.

  5. Hi Lee,

Good first try and I can see you put a lot of effort into it.  The overall layout hurts my eyes a bit, a bit of a random layout.  My guess is you are two or three trial versions away from a final cut.  I am on Rev_10 for M20J's and K's, and each one is a little better.

Mooney used 0.100" and had very little material between th instruments.  Tightest layout out of all the manufacturers and thickest panel.  And most instruments have an 0.090 bezel anyway.

    2024-T3 works well.

And it looks like you are not doing the 1/2" radius at the bottom?

  6. I can't ever remember the alternator output pegged at 60A, never mind 70.  Especially with LED instead of halogen LL's.  There might be a bump when selecting gear up or down, or after starting.

So really no benefit or problem installing a 70A alternator, and unless you reach 60A you are not going to trip the breaker.  And breakers are notoriously inaccurate anyway.

And its not like you are changing from a 40A to 70A alternator - I would look at the aircraft wire sizing chart, you may well have a big enough wire for a 70A alternator already, then go ahead and change the breaker?

  7. Agreed, there may be more of a smoothness benefit on a 4 banger, but I find the 2 blade smooth enough on the TSIO360.  (and I have 3 blades on my seneca, so have compared the two).

And you are doing a biased comparison on the useful load comparison.

Try a W&B with 11lb of charlie weights and your current 3 bladed prop and the benefit is more like 36lbs.  Try it again with a 2bladed prop.

And to be clear, I like the MT props, and generally take whatever little performance and weight reduction I can.  I just don't like their service requirements, cost and logistics.

  8. Can you install 'Charlie Weights' in the tail of a 201 or is it a 231 thing?  11 lbs in the tail is a lot better than 50 lbs of unnecessary baggage.

I went with a new 2 blade prop instead of any of the 3 bladed options.

My opinion, MT's are very nice but I don't like their service interval and repair an overhaul price. And overhaul locations.  I think you are just setting yourself up for much higher future costs with very little performance benefit.

  9. Us dumb canucks have to install diversity transponders that transmit a signal upwards to a barely working iridium satellite network.  The airliners that really need to install them for the vast areas on non radar environment are able to get fleet exemptions.

So I have a perfect as removed GTX345 transponder with a new install kit for sale, can supply with either a config module or a GAE12 encoder module.

  10. I did it in my Seneca before repainting.  Found an airplane with the correct parts, installed the filler door and shelf, along with the fuselage doublers.  Don't like the OEM push pull cable for on/off, but what can you do.

The mountain high system is better, but once you start deviating from the factory design, the paperwork gets more difficult.

  11. I think you are chasing your tail.  First, you have a new engine, go fly it hard for a while, only concern is not to let the temps go over 400.  Then check which cylinder might have a different probe location, just so you know.

Then go learn all about the Gami 'spread'.  Once you understand which cylinder peaks first, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and how the EGT's and CHT's follow one another (or not) you will start to understand why one cylinder is hotter than the rest.  Is more likely unbalanced fuel and air rather than cooling and baffles.

And then cylinders are just different, both in manufacture, location on the engine, baffling, airflow etc.

I don't think you have an unreasonable spread at all.
