  1. I am sure this could be buffed out in no time; the logs apparently as well.
  2. Thanks all for the helpful information...
  3. I have visited some prior discussions related to this but I am now faced with the possibility of having a good plane but have some concerns about the engine which has less than 20 hours in the last 6 years (plane has been hangared in a climate controlled hanger). One earlier thread suggested budgeting for a top end. I plan do do a PPI if I go forward but not sure that this would completely catch any potential issues. Is the main concern the cylinders or is this a deeper concern (i.e., crank and bearings, etc) that might involve an OH? Also if just a top end, what would be a good budget number? Any thoughts?
  4. Thanks everyone for all of the great info. Very helpful.
  5. I am looking at a J with an engine approaching TBO and would consider buying the plane but need some cost estimates because I would opt to have an engine swap upon purchase. I checked out the 2015 posting here on MS by (DHC) and it seems like a pretty big ordeal (oil lines, hoses, prop governor, ...). Any insights into the cost for going with the factory IO-360-A3B6? Also, a shop recommendation for that price? Any other considerations? Thx.
  6. Any additional thoughts about this product? Function? Reliability? Maintenance/costs?
  7. Not my place to price another person's plane. The total hours look attractive but there are a bunch of other planes out there that seem to be better buys. I keep coming back to check mooneyspace each day and yes I will buy. I have spent enough time (and travel costs - lots btw - coast to coast and multiple times down south) looking at Mooney planes to know what I want and what is or is not a fair deal. This is btw a great place to sell your plane. I had an opportunity to buy a 201 last summer advertised here that I passed up and I highly regret. I am now much more educated and eager to buy. It has been a great learning experience. This site has helped tremendously in educating me. :-)
  8. FWIW, I just looked at the Eagle that was on EBAY. It is now on Trade-a-Plane. The plane is physically located at Kenosha (WI). https://www.trade-a-plane.com/search?category_level1=Single+Engine+Piston&make=MOONEY&model=M20S+EAGLE&listing_id=2316036&s-type=aircraft Plane is nice; a few cosmetic issues. UL was 970. The questionable: 1) Sat a while (10 hours since 10/2014) and sparse hours since 2010. 2) Oil changes seemed to have been too expensive for the first owner. Entries indicate 60, 70, 90 and 130 hours between some of the changes. Long stretches of the oil sitting due to sparse usage between 2010 and 2018. Disappointing as I had high hopes on the way to see it. The seller mentioned a recent bore-scope that showed the cylinders to be fine...
  9. Off topic for someone wanting to sell their plane, but... since you all started :-) ... the ability to have gun while flying over Canada toward the far reaches of Alaska has been on my mind. DBX, your mention of a 45-70 had me looking as Canadian laws and it looks like this might be a good option. Thx :-)
  10. You mentioned it being cheaper? Any ballpark of the costs that you can share? Looking at a plane today where this will be a consideration.
  11. I used the nano 2 which came with an antenna (it is about 3" tall and quite thin). I seldom pick up a tower even though I am at 3-5 K and have the unit on the dash.
  12. Wow... I too built my own stratux for bidirectional and yes it cost a little more than $75. Seems like mine is a little more finicky about reception (my antenna choice?). If this really does have the reception that mine seems to lack, I just wasted my time. Thanks for posting. I need to visit their booth at OSH this week.
  13. Thank guys. Went through the logs again and yes the tach was replaced. Now all the numbers do make sense.
  14. Thanks Bob! Maxwell would be my choice if TX were closer. Still may go this route though so you just answered one of my questions about delivery. Thanks!
  15. Hi - I am needing to do a prepurchase on a Mooney in the Kansas/MO/IL area. Any recommendations for a good shop in the area (ideally KS or MO). I have considered getting it down to TX but it would mean having to get someone to fly it down so hoping for a shop that is good quality but closer. I found one shop in Illinois (Byerly) - anyone have any dealings with them?
  16. Thanks smwash02. This makes sense and more in line with what I had thought. I will ask the seller about the numbers they published. The TACH is less than the TSMOH figure they posted. Funny but Googling the topic brings up some varying opinions.
  17. Paul, Controller uses this in any ads posted there so I thought it was clear to me until the figures and acronyms I see in these specific logs. Thanks!
  18. OK - this was clear in mind until I ran across log books for a plane (1990 era Mooney) I am looking at. TSMOH is listed in the sales ad but I am having a difficult time correlating this to the logs. I see TT as a higher number than Tach but lower than Hobbs. Reading up about this, it seems this is less definitive than I thought. What should the TSMOH hours be based on? Thx.
  19. Nice plane. Very nice plane in fact. If you have (cash) this is an option. If I had $150K lying around, this is the plane I would buy. Problem comes in if you have to finance as the vref becomes a point of contention. Not being negative in any direction but this is the fact of life in trying to go upscale in your choice of planes. After many false starts I am going to see a plane (a Mooney) this weekend that looks really good. Hoping for the best but I have been in this situation multiple times so am very pragmatic. I know in the past many have posted how easy this is and how you should not be picky, however, this is a major investment for many of us. I wish everyone who is looking for a Mooney success.
  20. Hi KLRDMD, back in the saddle looking and have come across the following plane. You had mentioned that you would be glad to help so am reaching out. It does have a gear up in 2005 timeframe but otherwise the current owner has had it for about 10 years. Any thoughts about pricing or generally about the below.

I'll look at it and get back to you.

    2. KLRDMD

      KLRDMD

It has the A3B6D engine, not converted to the A3B6 so that's an issue. Is this the prop with or without the AD ? Who has been doing the maintenance and can you get electronic logs ? If all checks out, it looks to me like it is worth pursuing further and is a $110k airplane.

      Thanks KLRDMD! Much appreciated.

  21. KLRDMD, I need you to be my friend :-) With this kind of skill, you could make a good (Mooney) matchmaker... Tevya would be proud...
  22. Just noticed this thread. Horse puckey... As someone who has invested both coast-to-coast + TX expense at looking for a Mooney, I can tell you that the I have no intention of buying your plane if: * You try to hide damage or maintenance issues. This is an automatic disqualification. * Don't show up to host me when I fly across the country to see your plane. Take note Robbinsville... * Lie about the condition of the plane. Auto disqualification... * I know it is your baby and you value it but I am making a business decision on its value in the market place (I may need to sell it btw). * You feel that the ancient avionics in your plane are special, rock solid and a selling point. Since I am on a roll here ---- * Why do I need to call for the price? Really? Is your time more important than mine? * Why do I need to ask for you to post the logs? Is it that much effort on your part to do this given that you want to sell your plane? If so, maybe this is not the right time in your life to sell? I have also come close to buying but: 2 opportunities were taken off the market by the seller after I had expended effort in pursuing the plane; both of these were a high probability for a purchase. Just this week, I was ready to buy but timing worked against me and someone else noticed the gem and beat me to the offer - oh well... wasn't meant to be. I would have bought this one... I really wanted (and want) to buy a Mooney but at some point, the above challenges make me think that maybe I need to consider something else if I want to stay in the 45 day designated window (it is now over 6 mos). Yes I have fluctuated between turbo/non-turbo but for a good plane I would take either. I am open to a variety of options for a Mooney but I will not buy crap. I am open to damage if repaired properly but not if you try to hide it. Sorry for the rant but the topic collided with my 2nd Manhattan... Cheers!
