  1. Temperatures are forecast to go way up all over California starting tomorrow be real careful if you choose South Lake Tahoe as density altitude will be way up in the afternoon and departures have very unforgiving terrain. Lots of locations just a bit west of Tahoe in the foothills. Safe travels to you
  2. The thing about Yosemite is the higher your altitude the less impressive it is. Spent lots of time on the walls back when I was immortal and I must say it’s most impressive when looking up from the valley. Beautiful pictures skates.
  3. Agree with @ttflyer by 800agl I’m already past crosswind and approaching mid field very rarely do I depart straight out and by departing either on the cross wind or the down wind sometimes it’s a midfield crossing regardless I’m still really close to the airport in every phase of departure. If I lose power on initial climb out then yes it’s pick your spot (usually) done before I even take the runway. And even if you can’t make the runway the area around the airport is usually more forgiving than whatever is beyond the property. If I’m departing straight out I like to gain as much altitude as fast as possible then I’ll get back into my normal climb profile once I feel like I can get back to the airport if there is a problem. flame on
  4. Might be too late for change but Boulder City NV just south of Vegas is a real nice town and a trip to see the Hoover dam if you’ve never seen it is well worth the visit. Also close to the Grand Canyon. Flying north through CA I recommend flying along the western side of the sierra foothills lots of airports along the way for planned or unexpected stops the air is usually pretty calm along the way and there are several small airports in the gold country with historical towns nearby all are worth a look. Have a great trip
  5. Thank you Hank, been doing it all my life but this one turned out really well
  6. Memorial Day flight to VCB to meet Skates to deliver his painting original plan was for LVK but marine layer was very stubborn skates met up with a Piper Arrow to fly a Two ship formation and was nice enough to fly the extra distance to VCB which is almost always VFR condition's. winds were crazy blowing approaching 30 knots but right down the runway so easy peasey. Landing at home was another story winds 10 gusts to 20 knots at almost 90 degrees controls definitely got a good workout but was very satisfactory result. Had a nice lunch at the Nut Tree great little Mexican restaurant there.
  7. Last years Silent auction at the Mooney summit unfortunately produced no bids for a painting. I remember Richard aka “Skates” mentioned he would love to have a painting done of his beautiful Mooney. I contacted him and he agreed to make a very generous donation to the foundation. We were both very pleased with the results. Background is Pagosa Colorado Steven’s field. This was my sixth time doing this and unless someone shows some interest will likely be my last time as they take a considerable amount of time and effort. I want to say how much I appreciate all the previous years donations and to Mike Elliott for his efforts to generate support for the Gilliland foundation. Fly safe so we never need it.
  8. Was sure I was looking at the KPH column on the track log my bad…audios
  9. Very nice review and I really like the design, a real elegant mix of the angular and swoops excellent use of color as well. I’m curious about the mud red primer and what makes it so impervious to stripping. Well done
  10. Now more than ever the juice IS worth the squeeze, you have been given a gift as the alternative for someone with no symptoms would likely have been a severe cardiac arrest. They found some corrosion in your airframe but it’s correctable so get it fixed get signed off and attack life as you always have. Your incredible history of flight shows an amazing determination I’m sure you have all the support from the crew here on MS. GOD BLESS
  11. Strange indeed, looking at the flight profile for the Bonanza look like he took off from red bluff flew around in circles for a few minutes then I guess did the gear up. The Mooney flight was even more interesting shows a six minute climb from 1275 feet to 20400 then down to I think it was around 7000 speed was above 190 knots in level flight. UKI is just a stone throw away from me and I can tell you there was no kind weather that could have contributed to that kind of performance that day
  12. For my D it’s completely normal for a climb temperature of around 400 degrees. Slightly higher on warm days and lower on cold days. I only have the original gauges so accuracy is somewhat questionable however the gauge is going to be consistent to itself. I have been climbing at 2500 vs 2700 and to illustrate the difference in temperature at 2700 the needle is just above the 400 degree line and at 2500 it’s just below the line always at 120mph or higher. I don’t know what that means in terms of temperature but it’s definitely lower. My climb performance is reduced by about 1 to 2 hundred feet per minute. Still better than 600 FPM fully loaded. My question about regarding the timing is can we just do this in other words every aspect of our airplanes and engines is HIGHLY REGULATED so is this even permitted. As for me it is what it is I do my best to keep an eye on it and fly accordingly.
  13. Sad news, totally sucks man I hate it when these things happen. Pray for those that knew the pilot.
  14. Believe me I’m very proud to have such a great airplane and like so many things we see an evolution of improvements over time. The big Mooneys are so capable. Kind of like I’m driving a 70’s 911e and these long bodies are like 911GT3’s
  15. Very impressive, you two are definitely at the top of the Mooney food pyramid. Such an order of magnitude from my humble little model D.
