  1. I did my Instrument rating within 3 weeks in a Mooney, I did prep for the written before going to the school so that I could focus only on flight time. I prefer the part 141 structure and that was a discussion I had with the school since they operated part 61. They cleared the Mooney for the 3 weeks and I was able to get my Instrument rating. I was committed because my time was limited and I was determined to get the rating before I took my family in our new to me Mooney especially living in the NE.
  2. I believe that's the same company I used also for the prebuy on my J from the same seller as well. I don't think there named Montgomery Aviation anymore.
  3. Don Kaye http://www.donkaye.com/donkaye.com/Flight_Instruction.html Not sure if he's taking on new students because of the COVID 19. doesn't hurt to check with him. He's also a member and active on Mooneyspace.
  4. With a bathroom break, grabbing lunch, stretching, 40 gallons is right in line with some passengers bladder.

  6. I absolutely agree with you. I wonder at times how long will the GNS be out on the market before it becomes a KLN90B.
  7. Charles I see the promo, this was a smart move on Avidyne part. I would be curious to see the figures on owners that went to Avidyne vs having the GTN series installed as it requires a complete new install.
  8. Well, I'll have to figure things out, still have to get checked out in the 252 for the insurance, the plane is in AZ and I'm in Boston. Got to find an CFI comfortable with the equipment. I got my first quote came in today at $22K to install a IFD540.
  9. Thank you I almost forgot the Nav/Comm wiring.
  10. My cousin installs avionics for the airports My cousin does the upgrade avionics for the ground vehicle at MCO,MIA, Disney Etc and he said the exact same thing.
  11. This is the path I want to take...GNS to IFD self install when im ready to get the IFD.
  12. I'm willing to spend that time, right now the GNS is a better choice than the KLN90B. I just can't find any good material so I can get familiar with the 90B GPS.
  13. I know exactly what your saying. BUT!!! this is why I'm leaning to GNS as the installation cost isn't lost going to IFD vs going to a 750xi. I can use the GNS and then afterwards sell and recoup some cost of the box and put that towards the IFD540 or 550 which would be a slip in when I'm ready. Right now whether its the GNS or 540 they will need to be installed, the difference Im looking at is the cost of the Box itself not the installation.
  14. I saw the GTN650 that came up from Alan but I was still undecided on what model I wanted.
  15. I would like to have a 530W but at almost double the cost of 500TAWS im not sure I can justify it to later upgrade to the IFD550
  16. Just purchased a 86 M20K 252 and hope to have the plane in Boston by early September. I've been thinking about upgrading the avionics but in stages as the 252 still retains some of its original King avionics. King kma 24 audio panel, King KY196 Comm, KLN90B GPS, KNS80 ( inop), KX165 Nav/Comm. My goal is an IFD550, I really like the Avidyne IFD's and have the urge to just have it installed but at the same time I have to keep those urges in check for a few month's while I build funds. Now, I know that the IFD is a direct slip in for the GNS, so I was thinking about installing a GNS 500 series and then upgrade as funds permits this way the Case, back plate , antenna and wiring is all there. While doing research and checking the market for the GNS box I found that the GNS 500 NON Nav/Com are decently priced compared to the 530W which on the market is still fetching a rather high price. I also thought about upgrading the audio panel with a PAR200B which have the Comm built in, install a GNS 500 TAWS and scrap the KY196 and KNS 80 since its inop. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. J Swan
  17. The original DD location is still one of the busiest in Quincy.
  18. I did my IR training in a C model with Johnson Bar down in Ocala, Fl.
  19. I sent my Mag to Eagle Magneto in New Smyrna, Florida.. repaired and upgraded my D2000 series to a D3000 cost was $400. Swan
  20. Joe, I live in the Boston area. My M20J is currently in Florida KOCF for annual and avionics install. I'm hoping to have it in a couple weeks. Swan
  21. PPL @ 37.5 hrs in a 172 and a month later bought my Mooney. Quickly found out purchasing aviation insurance was diificult for the mooney with a PPL. I quickly felt like a teen with a new drivers license looking to purchase a corvette. Went to Ocala Aviation in Ocala, FL which had a Mooney M 20C and did my complex, enjoyed the plane and my instructor so I did my complete instrument training in the mooney including checkride. Total time first flying my plane was just over 90hrs.
  22. I did my research before I went to get my PPL and knew that a Mooney M20J is what would work for me. I received my PPL with 37 hours(part141) and I purchased my M20J. I took an accelerated instrument rating class 10 days and again part 141 at Ocala aviation in Florida because they had a Mooney M20C on there plane list. I flew the M20C manual flaps and Johnson bar for all of my instrument training and my check ride. I received a great insurance rate for being instrument rated but also having does 50+ hours under the hood in a Mooney type. Love the feel of the plane and when I got into my M20J I could not stop smiling....from beginning to end of flight. I still get excited when I open my hanger doors.
  23. I also took an accelerated course. After looking around I ended up at Ocala Aviation. I was fresh out of school with my PPL and knew I wanted a Mooney... I have been searching topics on Moonyspace befor getting my PPL. I purchased my M20J with 37 hours total. I got my written and IR certificate in 18 days total even though there was some weather (sandy hurricane) on the east coast. I spent 50 hours in a Mooney M20C Johnson Bar. 5 hours a day under the hood. I had 1.0hrs ground school...2.5 hrs flight... lunch.. 1.0 hrs ground school... 2.5 hrs flight.. It was one of the most challenging cert... I had an awesome instructor (Martin) who even had me fly into Orlando International and challenged me all the way to completion. I give him much credit..I was not just a number to him..I still call him with questions and he is still there to answer. Even though he charges me... for lunch when I fly into Ocala..
