I have a full sized black (non girly) Ipad which I have on my co pilot yoke and it used to overheat quite a bit, usually on initial taxi, even on days that aren't too warm to me. The two things that stopped mine from overheating were Putting ipad on the yoke at the end of my runup rather than at startup (or covering it with something until im ready to leave runup) Pointing a ceiling air vent directly at the ipad (this is actually on my ipad functionality checklist) Making sure it is as vertical as possible, and not tilted back so the sun mainly hits the top of it rather than the face. Haven't had it overheat once since I started doing these.

GTN 650 failing at altitude with constant LOI issues
JohnB replied to rwarederek's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Do you have a stratus unit and stratus antenna to go along with your iPad? If you do, should consider Interference from your stratus unit blocking your gps reception. Turning off your ipad/iphone wont stop this interference if your stratus is still on. This happened to me and after a really expensive change of essentially the things you're doing, nothing changed this until I clearly demonstrated that it was the stratus antenna, and once I changed it, no more intermittent GPS reception. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/13531-garmin-430-reception-problem-possible-stratus-interference/ -

ForeFlight Announces Connectivity with Garmin Avionics
JohnB replied to Cabanaboy's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I am interested in what you find out as well as I was not intending to buy a gdl at all with my flightstream. I was hoping that you could bluetooth connect from your ipad to/from the flightstream 210, while still maintaining your wireless connection from your stratus to your ipad. That way, you would get ipad input from both your flightstream and your stratus. I am going to guess that you may have to ask more than garmin for the answer, as they may say it works perfectly with Garmin Pilot, but you have to ask foreflight or Apple for the other connectivity questions. -
ForeFlight Announces Connectivity with Garmin Avionics
JohnB replied to Cabanaboy's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Woo hoo! I am so getting a flightstream 210. Woo hoo!!! Bennet, Im with you! I am already in line in my avionics shop to get a flightstream 210 installed. Soon, will have the capability of pushing a flight plan to and from foreflight to your avionics which is what I have been hoping would happen forever without having to switch to garmin Pilot! I predict theres going to be a LOT of folks like me buying flight streams now. -
Hey Dave! Yes I do want to find an excuse to go to Yuma, dog flight would be fun but formation clinic would be much better.. I would have to arrange it so I would leave at exactly 0:10 after whatever hour I depart for cinematic reasons.. (yes Im a movie buff and would milk a trip to Yuma for all it's worth Thats great! You two make it look so easy. I'm in. By the way, did you put your go pro cam on your vertical stabilizer or? Great to meet you by the way! John
-
That was my thought too Hank, but if I practice, I can fly slow as needed.. Im in! Hope there's another class in Yuma coming up.. (another place I'd like to find a reason to fly to) John
-
That was awesome!! Ok you two have convinced me, I am definitely going to do some formation flight training! Very nice!
-
Thanks everyone.. was great meeting you all, very nice to put faces to all of these posts on here... and wow!! Awesome pics! I want to do some of that formation flying one of these days! Looking forward to the next gathering of Mooneys!

If anyone wants to team up to do a Pilots n Paws transport around the California area, let me know! Im always doing them and it is great fun to have Mooney Mooney animal handoffs!

Interventional Cardiologist, Legal Consultant/Expert Witness, Real Estate Investor and since I've owned my Mooney, I sometimes feel like a professional Dog Flyer-er (cool post by the way to get to see what everyone does besides fly Mooneys)

Way to go Reb! You did beat my record! Chihuauas (Chiuuauae?) are great fun to take! And the best are puppies!! (I took 4 on my trip up)
-
Sounds great!! Cute Beagles!!! Funny you should mention that.. one of these dogs pooped in his crate, 30 minutes into a 2 hour flight. Farts go away, but poops remain for all to "not enjoy" hah!
-
Works for me!
-
I know for an undisputed FACT that our cabins are quite roomy. This is one of my recent Pilots N Paws trips with 2 people, 8 dogs with all of these crates.. no problemo!

Thanks Dave, Good point! I could probably deal with my flap indicator light being out if that failed, as you can see them as you mentioned. But for the things like cowl flaps, elevator trim and rudder trim positions, which you can't see while flying. that would be non optimal, and yes i'd pay to get those done if i could!

Ok that's about 5 of us so far that would want a solution for these indicators if they go out. (I can bet there's a number of us owners who's indicators have failed and are just dealing with it) I remember someone here asked me how many revolutions up on the elevator trim wheel is the takeoff position on my indicator. I asked LASAR already, and they said the same, they're not being made, and the only ones they would have are ones scavenged from other Mooneys out of service . Doesn't seem that complicated of a part?

I'm in for wherever. Catalina could be fun. We could take over the island!!

Hi all, My cowl flap indicator position light is out. On questioning my mechanic, he says the entire indicator has to be replaced and he says that Mooney is no longer making them? Ok its not such a big deal with a cowl flap indicator, but I heard the same is true for the elevator trim and rudder indicator lights as if those go out would be a bigger deal. Does anyone know if these are replaceable? I have now memorized the position from full deflection that is my takeoff trim and rudder trim position just in case those do go out, at least I will have that, but it would be nice to replace these when they fail. Anyone have a solution? Or is it wait until they fail and then best guess?

I tried the app, and on he ground with a full wifi or data connection it's works fine, displays relative altitude of whatever you point at. In the air when you have less of a signal, it only tells you the percent up or down what you pointing tip

Since I'm based in Long Beach, I fly in and out of LAX Bravo airspace all of the time and it's no problem at all. I pretty much always do IFR so it's not an issue. However, if you're vfr, still no problem. If you are flying at 11,000 ft or above, you don't need to get any clearance, but talking to flight following would always be a good idea. If you are flying below 5k feet, I would suggest requesting the mini route which you should request in advance from flight following before you get there and they will relay that request for you. It's from SMO to VPLSR on the SMO 128 radial. You'll be talking to ATC, and they'll get you through, I've never had them not clear you for this one, (I think once they asked me to do the shoreline route, which is pretty much follow the shore at the altitude they give you) but in the unlikely event that they can't clear you, you can transition through the special flight rules area at 3500 in your direction on close to the same routing (SMO 133 radial) so you can brief the SFRA rules just in case. If you're going medium high (above 8k) the Hollywood park route can be used from van nuys. For this one though, if you're not cleared for the route at the last minute, you will likely have to go high, or do an eastbound leg towards El Monte with a few gyrations, whereas with the mini route, it would be a simple transition to the special flight rules area in the very unlikely event that the mini route was not available.

Low Manifold Pressure on Take Off in Mooney Bravo
JohnB replied to rocketman's topic in Mooney Bravo Owners
Did some more research and found out on our Lycoming 540s, we get our full 270 HP at 35" MP. Anything above that is just extra, and 34" would be only slightly less than 270. I'm getting 35.3" or so on my take offs. (Discrepancy solved was my factory mp gauge that was off a bit) -
Low Manifold Pressure on Take Off in Mooney Bravo
JohnB replied to rocketman's topic in Mooney Bravo Owners
Great topic guys, and topical! My Bravo previously maxed out between 36" and 38"MP. Over the last several months, I started noticing oscillations of mp at full power requiring me to throttle down to avoid redlining. . Had a bunch of things replaced (turbo, density controllers, wastegate) So now its set at 34" MP peak with no more oscillations. This apparently changes as atmospheric conditions change. in reading through the Lycoming tips... http://lycoming.com/Portals/0/techpublications/TechTips/Key%20Operations.pdf ( Look at page 57 through 60 and pg. 61, para 3.) a lower peak MP may improve engine life, but how low is too low? Does anyone know if there a MP that's so low that useful load and high altitude airport takeoffs will be affected?
