Foreflight. I had both for a while, and always came back to foreflight, but Garmin pilot seemed to have some things that I wished foreflight had like a timer you could use to count up or down or give reminders (how difficult could that be to program??) and the maps tended to look a lot clearer, and airspace restriction information a bit more accessible on Garmin Pilot. You might get better target trend (From Garmin's TargetTrend (tm)) lines if you stay with Garmin Pilot and flightstream compared to foreflight (I don't know this, but I will have this combo shortly and ill check it out) But the flight planning, changing routes was far better on foreflight for me, and integration of weather, terrain profile and a whole host of other features made me stay with Foreflight. The cost of either one of these subscriptions was not a consideration at less than $200 a year for either one is absolutely nothing compared to the cost you would pay if you got this same info from a panel mounted solution (>$25,000 installed and >$1,200 per year subscription!)

10!!!!! That's Awesome! I have a 6 cylinder so likely wouldn't be able to fit 10 in that orientation.. BUT in the landscape orientation, may be able to get more than 8 in my new 830 once its installed since I know now from your picture that its possible for the device to monitor that many.. Thats awesome thanks!

I plan on putting my EDM 830 where my 800 is now on the right side of my panel after removing my ADF , and replace my NAV/COM2 radio and moving things around on the right stack. For some reason, my panel picture isn't uploading correctly, guess ill have to take another.

West Coast Mooney 2016 Get Together LOCATION PREFFERENCE
JohnB replied to FlyDave's topic in General Mooney Talk
If I'm not working that weekend, I'm in for 1.5! Place doesn't really matter to me, all three sound like fun! -
Ok after researching this full circle, and reading all the posts here, I'm going to upgrade my 800 to an 830 and NOT do the 900 install at this time because: A jpi edm 900 will not fit landscape in my panel without a major panel re do and would probably end up in portrait mode when all is done. In portrait mode you only get to display 5-6 linear gauges on the 830'and 900, and you can display up to 8 on the edm 830 in landscape mode. With a 900, you don't get to choose the 5 gauges that are displayed, whereas with an 830, you can display whatever you want on your choice of 8 linear gauges. An 830 will fit near where my 800 is in landscape mode, with my choice of linear gauges to always display. The cost difference and hassle factor to upgrading to a 900 is much greater (including panel redo, 900 install time, moving other instruments, no trade in through jpi of 800) vs doing an 800 to 830 swap (almost plug and play install, upgrade path exists) will allow me to save more coin for more upgrades and not keep the plane down as long. There you have it. Thanks again for all of the input! John

ADF Approaches, gone or is anyone still flying them?
JohnB replied to JohnB's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Wow... did you remove your ADF antenna as well or just the receiver and indicator? Yes... good point Paul., I was wondering if there are airports with only an NDB approach, and so far, dont see any in the US. Mexico yes? But you're right, wouldn't ever want to fly an NDB in real IMC, and even worse in Mexico! Wow.. that looks like a fun approach! Looking up, this airport has a GPS and an RNAV approach, so wouldn't be necessary. but may be fun All HUGELY helpful everyone. Gracias!! Ok unless I really want an AM radio, ADF is going bye bye. Thanks again! -
Howdy. I am upgrading my avionics, and my ADF (which I used to use as a radio) went out and I was thinking of removing it, as I couldn't find any approaches in California that still had an operational one. Im wondering about others experience, as I used to have great fun flying these (although i don't think I would ever voluntarily use these in actual imc) and the only airport I could find with ONLY an ADF approach was Ensenada, MX which is a very cool approach by the way. Curious about other parts of the country if anyone still has them nearby without a GPS overlay and does anyone use them, or out of the country, is it still useful to have? Ive heard that there are a few approaches where ADF is required on an ILS, but not the primary source of navigation and I heard that the FAA has made most if not all of those have a GPS position overlay. Would like to know if everyone has just removed their ADF, or does anyone still use it for flying to smaller or out of the US airports?

Back up charts/navigation in Glass Cockpit
JohnB replied to L. Trotter's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Great thread. I am considering adding more glass to my cockpit. Being used to foreflight, and all of its enhancements, it seems that I am chasing trying to buy a panel mounted system that will do almost all of the things my iPad will do now. I think the technology race for ipad functionality is way ahead of the garmin GTN 700, and the nearest mounted competitor would be the Garmin G500 with SVT at $19k and the GTN at $18k. Ok the GTN looks very useful for its display features but the ipad features, some of which dont exist on panel mounts like actual names of FBOs on taxi diagrams, synthetic vision (can add this to the g500/1000), fuel prices, telephone numbers of airport facilities, restauraunts, waypoint flight planning and changing, ridiculously easy chart updating, far exceed my expectations for essentially pennies compared to the other prices. So no matter what I upgrade to, I will keep my Foreflight up and running! Maybe Apple should apply for an STC for an "aviation quality" panel mount iPAD with a cooling fan at a price of <10k? -
That's a great suggestion for an interim solution thanks! And if the portrait mode really bothers me, I suppose I could always just push those buttons and turn my head sideways to read it. :) Gracias!
-
Exactly what I want to do, as i wouldn't mind a patch if it came out looking close to the website picture. And my panel also looks a lot like this one. So far installers think it can't be done in my model without a new panel, but im still hoping!
-
I hear you.. all of this for wanting to install one instrument! I hadn't looked at the CGR30, that would fit, but not enough parameters always displayed for me, I would choose the 900 in portrait over that one . Their 50-P does, but the same size issues as the EDM 900. I'm going to call JPI next week to see what kind of Mooney that is in their website picture and how they made it fit where I would like mine placed, otherwise I may have to a) do a panel upgrade now, then another one later, or b ) deal with a 900 in portrait mode, or c) do all of my big upgrades now and be broke for a while..
-
Hey Dave, you were so right. Ok back to square zero as there's not enough room in my M to place a JPI EDM 900 or even 830 taking out the factory instruments. I was hoping that it would be like this one from the JPI website, but apparently this picture on JPIs website is not from an M model, so my 900 wont fit between the instrument cluster and the trim indicator. Grrr. The only way it would fit without a panel is to put the 900 in portrait mode, which to me doesn't look as good. Anyone with a Bravo who put one in without a total panel redo? (I wanted to save my panel redo for the big upgrade) Or anyone have theirs installed in portrait mode and happy? Thanks guys.. always useful tips here.

I want a GPSS system as well, and I have similar equipment in my Bravo (K-150/ 430W). I tried to contact Icarus, no joy.. are they out of business? That's a shame as I was interested in looking into it as some of those audible callouts might be helpful. Anyone know of any products like it? Anyway I think our options are limited to an STEC ST 901 or a DAC GDC31 for an addon GPSS without doing a panel PFD/MFD with it like Aspen. My installer mentioned the DAC product. Both the DAC and the STEC product look identical to me from initial viewing.

Jerry, great point, I told LASAR about my flap indicator, they took it apart and found out that a resistor was bad, replaced it, now it works like a charm! So these things are fixable!

I am definitely going to do the 900 route. Just found out from LASAR quoting the OEM gauges, are about $800-$1,000 each when they fail and can be hard to find. the probes and senders for these range from $250 to $4600 each!! So to get out of that race, Im skipping the 830 step. And I like getting that extra 6lbs useful load potential. So im going 900 new install, taking out most of my factory gauges and probes. Maybe I'll keep my upgraded 800 as a backup to my primary gauges as I have now, although I'm sure I won't need it after I get used to my 900. If anyone needs any factory gauges or OEM probes to these units, pm me as mine will be coming out soon. Thanks everyone!
-
Wow, all useful tips! Thanks guys! Say does anyone have an OEM oil temp gauge that they want to sell or know where to get one? If I went the way of the 830, which is clearly an easier and cheaper install since my 800 works flawlessly, I'd need to fix my OEM which is starting to go bonky. This was one of the other reasons I was thinking of upgrading to 900 as ive found these gauges are hard to get replaced. Or is this not the case? Aerodon? Thanks for sharing Maurauder, Like your experience of having gone from a 700/800 to an 830 then a 900, as I know how I am, if I really like the 830, I might just want to do the 900.. Now if I could just find an installer that will install a 900 without having bought it through them, I would probably go the 900 route, grr another snag. Decisions decisions. But fun ones!
-
Thanks guys.. Ok you've convinced me.. I need a 900, gracias!
-
Thanks M, that helps a lot! one thing I like about having my factory cluster and my edm 800, is that if one goes, no problem. But I could for sure use the panel space from eliminating redundant factory instruments. Im wondering if i kept just enough factory instruments to fly in case the 900 fails. (Im thinking RPM, MP, TIT, and a few others) or do you even need backup engine instruments if you have a 900? Which backup instruments did you (or anyone else who has a 900) keep when you installed your 900?

My first airplane bought was a Mooney Bravo. Before I did, I had 20 years of renting airplanes, my instrument rating and maybe 20 hours complex time in an arrow and a few 172 RGs. I could have easily bought an Archer, or an Arrow or a Warrior, which is what I was very used to renting, but I know I would have easily outgrown those essentially as soon as I bought it and would want something else pretty much right away. With my Bravo.. I have no desire to get anything else for a long while so upgrading MY airplane is easy for me to justify. (On a non keeper airplane, you might say, well I don't want to upgrade that because I may not get my money out of it) I am doing easily 4x more flying than I did when I was renting, got a great transition instructor to make that jump and couldn't be happier. (Ok I lied a bit.. if my Mooney was Pressurized then I would be ecstatic)
-
Im at that decision point. I have an EDM 800 with all of the available probes working fine, and one factory instrument that's getting a little bonky. So.. I want to upgrade to either an 830 or a 900. Since i have all of the probes for the 800, the 830 I imagine would be no brainer, but the 900 replacing my factory ones might take a while. So for anyone who has done all three (upgrade a 700/800 to an 830 then getting a 900), would you recommend just skipping the 830 and going for the 900? How long did you wait until you made the jump from 830 to 900?

ForeFlight Announces Connectivity with Garmin Avionics
JohnB replied to Cabanaboy's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Foreflight Version 7.3 is out, released yesterday! With connectivity to our Garmin panel products! http://blog.foreflight.com/2015/09/14/foreflight-two-way-flight-plan-transfer-garmin-avionics/ I just tried to get my avionics shop to put a Flightstream 210 in along with my ADSB out transponder, and Flightstream units are on back order. Wow.. Guess more than just me was waiting for version 7.3. Exciting stuff! Now in the queue for getting my Flightstream unit from the factory. -
Great question. I would say your setup should ABSOLUTELY work. If your stratus does not take position and weather precedence, you could easily turn off your bluetooth on your iPad which should completely disconnect it from your flight stream. (easy to do, just a swipe up from the bottom any screen and tap the bluetooth icon) I was hoping that when Foreflight v 7.3 comes out that enables flight plan transfer through foreflight, this should do both. (keep stratus input for weather, and bluetooth output to your flightstream for flight plan transfer) Im waiting until v 7.3 comes out THEN I will probably get my flight stream. I already have a stratus. Will be getting my ADSB out solution in the next 2 weeks with an AXP transponder, so I should have ADSB weather and traffic input active on my ipad, and out on my transponder which should make me meet the 2020 mandate early, and have all available ADSB info on my ipad.

Way To go!!! I've heard of that compassionate call sign, never used it. What is it? I usually just put in remarks "Pilots n paws rescues on board. rdcd roc rod" and the controllers have been very good at not giving me dive and land descents and shortcuts to keep altitude below 9000 when traveling with furry passengers.

Congrats!!!! Great memory you've created for your life together!
