My suggestion- do everything on the list except for the oil strainer and fuel strainer. Either don't worry about them, or pay someone to do them. Then, at the next 100 hour or annual inspection, ensure they are both completed.

That's my actually too many circuit breakers. The current installation manual (thanks @kpaul) says the GMU should be powered from the G5 HSI breaker, and both GADs share a breaker.
-
Yet another reason I'm going with the G5s.

FAA’s Part 23 Rewrite Ready for Release (from AIN)
Andy95W replied to Mooneymite's topic in General Mooney Talk
I'm not so sure I agree. While it's true the Part 23 rewrite has been glacially slow, take a second to think of the changes we've seen since 2016. While the complete rewrite might be beneficial to some of us, the real crux of the matter is getting better equipment available for installation, quicker. 4 years ago we had barely seen the advent of the Dynon D10, now we have an incredible array of products all designed so that we can ditch the one system that is least reliable and most problematic- vacuum. Four years ago, to install an HSI, it was close to $10k. A G5 today costs $3k and your local A&P can install it. The cheapest autopilot was $20k. Now it's about $5k, and can probably be installed by your local A&P. Dual Aspens? Easy. Electronic ignition? Two STCed models are available right now. -
Sorry about the poor quality. All M20Cs have the battery box on the firewall, even post 1965, unless they have been modified to emulate the M20E.
-
On a pre-1965 Mooney, definitely go with the remote, and mount it on the firewall on the same side as your oil quick drain. You'll cut your oil change time by 1/2 because you'll only have to remove one third of your cowling.

You might not have to join EAA to do the project, but you should. It's an excellent organization that does a lot to help all of General Aviation, the magazine you get is great, plus you get access to all kinds of additional resources like the Solidworks software. EAA does for "regular" people like us what AOPA used to do for us. If you're going to join an aviation group, make it EAA.

Put a pipe through the nose gear truss and use a standard scissors jack under the pipe. Jack from the co-pilot side.
-
That would clean up nicely with some WD-40 and compressed air to blow it out.

That's newer than the bootleg version 9 I've been reading. Thanks.

Different breakers, yes, but I think the different bus idea might have changed. I've been reading through the G5 install manual and can't find that reference anywhere, but I've seen it posted here often. I think it might have changed when they realized that with the battery backup it isn't really essential any more. But again, I'm not sure and I might've missed it in the manual.

Acceptable Single Malt for Established Gentlemen Aviators
Andy95W replied to jlunseth's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
⬆️⬆️⬆️ That one. Very peaty, if you like that sort of thing. One ice cube or a few drops of water really brings out some extraordinary flavors. Surprising for only being 10 years old, and an excellent, complex single malt for the price. -
He's a little abrasive, but it's not nice to call Chris a "topic creep". We're trying to make this site inclusive and congenial.

First 4 month into ownership
Andy95W replied to lithium366's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Don't do anything based solely on oil analysis. It should be just one of many data points pointing you toward a solution. Oil analysis on its own is dubious at best. The metal you found initially in your filter sounds very normal as well. Generally, our engines don't just seize up all of a sudden without warning, unless it's a fuel problem or your M20J dual-mag falls off the back of your engine. Everything you're talking about will begin to add up over time and let you know when it's time to overhaul. -

TruTrak Autopilot Pre Order's / Status Update
Andy95W replied to Jeev's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
A few people got it, so... yes? -
@Immelman- your description above is practically identical to mine. I was concerned my rate jumped more than 10%, so I messaged Parker Woodruff. His explanation was that the previous years' rates were abnormally low, now it is actually where it should be. Sounded reasonable, to me.

I was a bit harsh in my initial post. Apologies. I definitely agree that requiring GPS to fly a coupled ILS approach strikes me as... odd. Especially when the GFC600 doesn't have that limitation.
-
Seriously, are we all such rotten pilots that our autopilots have to fly coupled approaches or our whole day must go to crap? Lance, you could still use the GFC 500 to fly the ILS, but you might have to do it using Heading and Vertical Speed modes. Oh the Horror!

TruTrak Autopilot Pre Order's / Status Update
Andy95W replied to Jeev's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have it on good authority it is scheduled for April 1 for the Mooney M20B thru G. -
I was taught that, too, but never thought it was unique to the KI-525, it seems to work with every HSI I've ever used (though I'll admit to being partial to the KI525 display- it just seems to be intuitive).

Recommendations on oil consumption next steps
Andy95W replied to vance.k's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I think those A&P/IAs are shrugging because your engine is pretty normal for a mid-time TSIO-360. Needing a turbo overhaul at mid-time is also not abnormal. You're starting to pick up some minor oil leaks and your cylinders are starting to get pretty oily, especially around your bottom spark plugs (such as the picture I included above). Certainly not abnormal behavior at mid-time as your oil control rings seem to be letting some oil past. Your compression rings are still in nice shape, which is why your compressions are still so good. Mike Busch would say the same as your mechanics, keep running it and feeding it oil until consumption gets greater than a quart every 4-6 hours, and keep borescoping the cylinders to see if one is getting considerably more oily than the others. Mike would be against more invasive maintenance than that unless you absolutely had to. If you really want to address the issue, then you'd be looking at a top overhaul, or at a minimum just putting in new rings. That would also get all of the pushrod tubes resealed so they'd stop leaking too. You might consider re-ringing the worst cylinders now, and then take another look at oil consumption in 6 months to a year and doing more, if necessary. Done in conjunction with your annual inspection would keep the costs down. I will admit that as an A&P myself, I'm better with Lycoming than Continentals. @M20Doc and @kortopates could probably add better advice here. I think you're lucky that you have so many mechanics that are looking out for you and not tying to screw you over. -
If anyone else, like me, had to look this up- do NOT read the Urban Dictionary definition. I can't not think about it now...
