  2. Sorry everyone for not responding sooner! Been on my annual pilgrimage to Florida. Just did 20 hours in her! (2qrts of oil) She never disappoints!!! Flew great!! MD - Charleston (1 round of golf) Charleston - SSI (2 rounds of golf) Dropped my pax off in Tallahassee - yup that was me! Continued to Destin, Ft Myers, & N Palm Beach County Back to SSI, Wilmington NC....... Then to FN Dulles to go through the TSA Gateway (total cluster) so I could get into Wilmington DE because our President came home for the weekend again! And just got the email he'll be back Tuesday and Wednesday. Guess he wants to celebrate St Pats day in DE! The next 4 years are gonna be tough for GA in DE! Great comment Carusoam!!! Ad says damage history in the 80's. If that scares you off - no worries! I am the reason it hasn't sold - I have had requests by no less than a dozen people for the logs. I just got home today and will have them scanned in and emailed out this week!

  3. Well...how about 3,141 digits of Pi. 4. All this documentation was before we had engine monitors. I lean using the engine monitor on climbs as well as cruise. The manufacturer gets the last word because they know the installation, in particular the cooling ability. I question either manufacturer’s motivation: Mooney wants performance first, and engine to last long enough they’re not going to have warranty claims. Engine manufacturer the same, but would be better if engines didn’t make it to TBO, parts are a profitable part of the business. My motivation is to get the engine to go beyond TBO, maximizing MPG while maintaining 150 knots TAS in the safest possible way. Regarding oil changes, you can’t change the oil too frequently. It depends on the timing of my long cross country trips, I change oil every 30-50 hours and couldn’t care less about what the manufacturers recommends.

  6. If you're buying a plane to avoid weather and want TKS I wouldn't rule out the Bravo. Any turbo is going to be useful in climbing efficiently (I use the word efficient because I know some people have taken their O's to 17k, but it's not the quickest in getting up there) above cloud layers in the winter. Bravo TKS's seem to be selling at a premium right now but will probably be easier to find than a FIKI Encore...

  9. Today was a beautiful day to fly. I decided to practice dialing in my landings in the MOONEY M20J. I have been getting better as I fly the plane more and more but that is more luck than skill and practice, so today I focused on trying to nail my touchdown point and shortening my required runway so I can feel comfortable visiting smaller airports in the area.

  11. This is really squirrely. Something's clearly not going right or so many folks wouldn't be having problems who never had problems before. Theory: Someone in "engineering" changed the latest Terrain database and eliminated some feature that made it backward compatible with older versions of the 430W/530W operating system/software version. That might explain why some are working fine and others are not...

  12. Oh, man. Everyone has their favorite . I have been associated with a number of flight schools over the years. They all told me that after trying everything Goodyear Flight Special IIs were the best value. This included the CB owner in Anchorage that nursed a C-172 with morning sickness to well beyond TBO and wouldn't do pitot static checks because of a loophole legal opinion he got that allows filing IFR for a training flight if you don't actually enter IMC. I don't go through enough tires to have a sufficient database myself, so I just buy FS IIs. +1 on the airstop tubes for the mains. They don't seem to work as well for the higher pressure nosewheel, but it's still a bit better than the standard tube. Skip

  13. Don"t waste anymore brain cells on this....get the concord....be done and don"t have to think about it for another 5-7 years.... Mine is over 5 years old now I think....no battery tender ever and sometimes go 2 plus weeks without flying....

  14. Since Mooney is working on a Gross Weight Increase for Long Bodies getting an FIKI Bravo, which there are many more of, makes more sense than trying to find a more expensive needle in a haystack.

  15. No need to replace both mains unless you’re already doing an annual and have both off and the 2nd will be due soon. I know this goes against what most will tell you but the most expensive tire isn’t necessarily the best deal. Which tires to get depends on how you use the plane. If you seldom fly, get the Goodyears. I do think they have better wear resistance from age. But if you fly a lot, get the cheaper Air Hawks. Sooner or later you’re going to make a bad landing or cross wind will drag you sideways and you’ll flat spot the tire. This will happen regardless if you have the cheaper or more expensive tires. But it’s a much bigger bummer when it’s the expensive ones. The more expensive ones last more normal landings but not enough more to pay for themselves.
    2 points
  16. There is no value in expensive tires on planes this light. AirHawks are probably the best value. I tend to get about 10 years out of them. Spend your money on the best tubes. BTW: Bald is a problem in car tires but according to the manufactures and the FAA certification aircraft tires are fine until they show cord.

  21. I think I now understand your question. I’m not an aircraft mechanic, but I grew up in my Dad’s auto repair business in the days when valve jobs and in frame overhauls were very common, so I think I have some experience and understanding that transfers to the subject to some degree. If repairs, and that’s what IRAN is, are done by a competent, experienced and conscientious tech under the correct conditions and circumstances, then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Most aircraft owners are NOT mechanics and often they’re flying is well funded. As I said earlier, the stakes are higher with the reliability of an aircraft engine. I am currently going through what began as an IRAN on my IO-360 A1A. It began by making metal. Upon inspection we discovered the need for cam and lifters. We thought that we would be able to simply split it, replace cam, lifters and maybe bearings and be good to go, but we knew that you can never know until after tear down. Once apart it was apparent that the case and crankshaft were questionable to the point of needing to be sent to the machine shop for proper evaluation. Once we know we were going that far, then it was apparent that a zero time overhaul was the better approach. Many factors were part of this equation including engine time and cylinder condition. Most people don’t understand engines and many in aviation can afford a fresh engine and naturally feel that an engine shop MUST be better than one rebuilt in a hangar in the boondocks. Perception is reality. If you perceive the more expensive engine to be more reliable because you paid more money for it AND you can easily afford it, then that is your perception and you will fork over the money. When you head into an IRAN always realize that it must come apart and keep in mind that you never know what you’re going to find. If you realize that, you can do the repair and properly inspect everything then decide whether to continue with repair, overhaul or exchange at an engine shop. Repairing is fine as long as you don’t lose sight of the big picture. My $0.02,

  23. Agree with everyone's comments. Additionally we've all seen that there is a thirst for these old style planes in newer condition especially paint and avionics. We all know the industry is very fickle $100k+ plane today could be an $80k plane tomorrow depending on the freakonomics in effect at time. Having said that, I think that aviation improvements should be for you and not be treated as an investment still understanding that we don't want to throw money away and hope to recapture some of our upgrade costs when selling.

  24. Brad- Do it! The Commercial is the most fun of the checkrides. During my oral for the commercial I stated that I look at every checkride as a learning experience and hope that I'm able to communicate a proficiency level on the required material so that we can continue with the practical test. Most examiners do not have a lot of Mooney time. So do tell they if they want to demonstrate a lazy 8 or other maneuver they can. My examiner asked if he could show me what he was looking for in a lazy 8 and I asked him to demonstrate. It was THE WORST lazy 8 I'd ever seen in the Mooney Missile (heavy nose). He looked at me afterward and said "you really know your airplane" and then "let's go back to the field for some landings). -Seth

  25. I think you’re safe to assume 95% of stimmy checks will be used to purchase goods. America, the land of debt, isn’t savvy enough to actually use it to pay down debt. Instead, they will use the funds to purchase foreign goods adding to the record high trade deficit.

  29. All of that is true. BUT boots suck compared to TKS. That is my experience and FEDEx. My experience is in my 201 with a NOT approved for known icing TKS system and a booted Cessna 402. To clarify when I say my experience I mean me im the airplane in question NOT experiencing a conversation with a friend who has a friend whose dad said...... In my 201 TKS in low keeps most ice off, when it can't keep up turn it on high and do something about it. The 402 with boots you have to wait for it to build then pop the boots. when all is well that works fine but freezing rain, run back you can't do anything about it and you don't know until you try to pop the boots and find out that it can't get it all off. yes I know most people stay on the ground if there is potential for icing but if you fly much in a cold state it is a fact of life. In 2011 FEDEx refitted their deiced Caravan fleet with TKS. They had a booted known ice system that had boots on pretty much every forward facing surface they even booted the cargo pod. Unfortunately it was not up to the task of there schedule routes and some people died from icing. I guarantee you they didn't put TKS on their aircraft because they thought the shiny leading edges would make people ship more packages with them. To have TKS installed on a Mooney today (February 2021) it costs $72,000. Think (I don't know) about how much it must cost to put it on a caravan.

  31. I don’t know. I helped install a TT on a piper and the installation was pretty darn simple and straight forward. Around 35 hours but I’m sure after you do it a few times you could get it down to 25 or so. Then I had the chance to fly behind it and I found it to be intuitive and simple.....and quite capable. Yes it is not certified below 700 but it flew the GPS approach hands free to the runway numbers with a stiff crosswind. That being said, there is a place for the TT I think. I would not choose to install it in anything more than a J model. But for a replacement for the older models it is quite reasonable since you are not likely to get back what you pay for a GFC500 on an E or even an F when you sell. BTW not having the trim servo on the piper was a non-issue, and I suspect it will be the same for any plane that didn’t come with a trim motor like most older Mooney’s, and ATC did not complain at all when I entered a course vice a heading in the TT. The TT was even very handy for an ILS approach as entering the final approach course as you centered the localizer made it an exercise in maintaining glide slope while letting TT fly the localizer final approach course regardless of cross wind conditions. All in all not a bad little AP for the money for older Mooney’s......if it ever comes to fruition. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  32. Thanks!. I couldn't find anything in the TCDS and I guess I missed the conn rod length in the OH manual -- makes sense it would be there since you would want to check for rod stretch due to an overspeed. Guess I can put a protractor on the prop and figure out the valve timing. Skip

  34. Discovery was different in both incidents. The first time I had gotten back from an international flight. The following weekend I aerated my lawn and felt tired. The next morning I get out of the shower and found my right leg was larger than my left leg. And it felt like the beginning of a Charlie Horse, that dull ache before the sharp pain. Had an ultrasound done and found clots from the calf up to the thigh and smaller clots behind the left knee. The second time it happen again after a long international flight. This time it was in the left leg, in the calf and was just warm to the touch. Ultrasound again confirmed clots in the calf but nothing in other parts of either legs. One thing to note is that there may be a time lag between the triggering event and the clots. For me, it is clear that it takes over a week before the symptoms show up after the triggering event. I should also comment that there are a number of people who have had clotting episodes and never were treated for them. I found this out when I asked one of the ultrasound techs if they ever saw evidence of previous clotting episodes (scar tissue) and the person was never treated for clots. She said it happens a lot and the person only found out because they were being treated for a more severe situation (pulmonary embolism).

  36. There really is nothing wrong with a dual mag. It’s just as reliable as independents, there is nothing in your accessory gearbox that can break and one mag still continue to function, the only real single point of failure for a dual mag is the single drive shaft, and has anyone every heard of one of those breaking on a mag? The only real issue is parts availability, I believe the dual mags are no longer manufactured? However there is no logical argument for a points based magneto, none. Lawnmowers went to electronic magnetos decades ago as did everything else, outboards etc. You can easily have self generating electronic ignition, back to lawnmowers, weed eaters etc, and there is no reason not to have an electronic module to replace the points etc in a standard magneto, just there isn’t enough money in it due to Certification hurdles and low volume.

  37. Really? You’ve had one done for 15-16 thousand?? I’ve heard of quotes that low, but never came across one. 15k would arouse some folks to look at garmin. As I have stated before several times, if you want to get full performance from the gfc 500, you MUST purchase and install a second g5. Period. The last time I looked (summer 2019) a full trick pony gfc install with the g3x touch and trim was over $30,000!!! You could get back to 23-25k if you would settle for the two g-5’s. Oh! Don’t forget the sales tax of an additional 8.5%. if I could get an estimate under signed contract for gfc 500 install for 15k... I’d ask someone to hand me a pen.

  39. Canuck, This is nothing except my opinion formed after extensive reading about the cam/lifters situation, but I believe that if you go with your choice number two, make sure you use the latest DLC coated lifters. From the current indications they will improve your chances of ongoing cam and lifter health as much as the roller solution. My $0.02,

  45. We’ve had a couple E’s sell for over 100. IMO you need to find a buyer that has an emotional connection with the plane. The E prior to Bobs had an acclaim style paint job and nice avionics. IIRC the first time it sold was to a current Acclaim owner who wanted another mooney (twins) for his daughter?... Bob’s aircraft was written about extensively on MS and my guess is the buyer used that info to culture a bond with the aircraft before setting eyes on it. This is definitely a sellers market right now. I believe it would sell and help recoup investments made in it. However, there is a lot of competition with other Mooney aircraft at that price level.

  46. My issue 3 months ago.......left mag failure in flight. Engine suddenly ran rough. Switched from “both” through R and L positions..... wowie! L mag would not operate engine. Backfires, spitting and coughing. Ok, got it, yikes, don’t even think about returning to left mag or both. Switched to right mag and headed back to airport. Per Aero Accessories (Van Nuys, CA), capacitor failure. No charge to diagnose and replace. All is well once more.

  47. My Mooney rolled out of the factory the same week I moved to Charlotte to begin a new life. Manager, business owner, vice president. Started flight lessons and bought an airplane. Ticket on Friday, first business trip Sunday night. Instrument rating, then bought a Mooney. A lot of miles since.
