  1. Taking off with full fuel is something we learn in primary training, but carrying more fuel than you need is not efficient. The lighter your plane, the faster/higher/cheaper it flies; takeoff and landing performance is improved. Airlines and commercial operators "fuel for the trip". However, one off-airport landing due to fuel exhaustion will probably wipe out all that efficiency.

  2. Why the drama? Just call ahead and ask about fees. The FBO will tell you or email you a fee schedule. At least they have for me. But I’m not an attorney. I have frequently felt undercharged at big city posh FBOs. I’d fly my Mooney in, get the red carpet treatment, buy 15 gallons of fuel and pay less for overnight parking than a car in the parking structure.

  4. Back when the Baby Bells were around. Southwest Bell used to call me on my ISDN line and market products. I thought it was bad form for me to pay them money and then they call me and waste my time. So I sent them an email and said I was going to charge them for the next call. They called, so I sent an invoice. They did not know what to do with it, I think I ended up talking to the CFO. Never got another call. Anyone can send an invoice.

  5. NJMac, I would hope to be more aware then to ever say our products just don’t fail, they do, but it is rare. i am as concerned as you are with this unit. While I’m at the Gulf Shores AOPA fly-in, on Monday I’m going to get the design engineer to do a deep dive into this unit. there are registers that are used to store errors, we are going to pull those and I’ll report. please know that I totally believe that the unit failed to operate, it is my objective to determined what did happen. Have a great weekend Mark

  6. I fuel for each trip specifically just prior to taking off. I never fill the tanks after landing. Here's why... In no particular order... I taxi to and from my hangar on grass... so lighter is better. With 76 gal useable, I rarely need full tanks and with absolutely accurate CiES fuel senders and JPI EDM900 fuel gauges, I don't believe in tankering fuel. From the research I've done, the theory of water condensing in half full tanks or gasoline somehow protecting the sealant, are both old wives tales and therefore don't subscribe to either. I've never once sump'ed water out of my tanks The harm of taxiing over rough ground with full tanks greatly out weighs any benefit gasoline might have on the sealant. Just my $0.02

  7. I have the GTN with the 510 and it works great with FF and the data update is a non event. Go with the 510. It is just an SD card. If you have the money for a new interior after this upgrade I suggest to hold off for a year and put that money into the JPI 900 at least. not the 800 series. Also be sure to flush mount your G5s....looks so much nicer. Like the plane was designed with it instead of being an after thought. You will need Garmin Pilot for the 510 and the updates. Unfortunately Garmin pilot does not do geo referenced taxi diagrams, only the AMM chart. FF does both.

  8. Sounds like a certain hangar elf could have a nice little side gig manufacturing pedal extensions. Once upon a time I was 5’4” and 110#. Alas, those measurements seem to be shifting, and not in the super-model direction. I love the articulating seat, but if anybody should find me some 3” extensions, I could have more dessert.

  10. The Skew-T is a wonderful tool...I primarily use it to teach weather...sort of like a painter uses a canvas. In order to learn how to use the diagram, you must understand the basic principles of weather...the Skew-T is my canvas of sorts. I could certainly do an hour webinar on how to use the Skew-T. Maybe start with icing. It won't compare to what you get in my 3 hour premium workshop. Certainly in significant turbulence the goal is to slow to maneuvering speed. It's not as much of an issue of preventing the wrinkling of the aircraft's skin as it is to avoid compromising the engine mount. Nevertheless, the use of speed brakes to slow down quickly is something I've done in the Columbia 350/400 aircraft.

  12. I bought AA’s (factory) Encore about a year ago. S/N 25-2026 Black bottom, White top, with silver and red accents. Also, the back seat in a Midbody is the same back seat in a long body. You are basically sitting on the spar in both the long body and mid body’s back seat. The extra length comes in the baggage area.

  13. Personally I hate brown and prefer modern paint schemes but to each his own. On a side note, why do we even have stripes? Cars haven’t had stripes since the 70-80s. I remember the ugly Firebird trans-am, thankfully that went away. Disclaimer: just my opinion, if you had a trans-am don’t send hate mail. [emoji2]

  14. When the engine stops making power, the airplane no longer belongs to you; It belongs to the insurance company. When you're playing blackjack and are showing a 16 against a 7, it's a bad hand. The correct bet is to hit, even though the odds are you'll lose, the odds are slightly less bad than not hitting. I've been to the crash site of the member here who went down into the trees at East Hampton. The trees were burned and the airplane was consumed in post-impact fire, but they got out before it ignited and survived.

  15. I can only hope to be physically and mentally well enough to fly a Mooney at 85. One thing I noticed, if you forget to change the trim and flaps from landing to takeoff configuration, by the time you've stowed the gear you'll be right above stall speed. That assumes you stow the gear quickly. Don't ask me how I know.

  16. You have one of the coin operated Mooneys. They fell out of favor when people realized that keeping the correct amount of change onboard for a flight was difficult.

  18. I'm no Apple fanboy, but I earnestly hope this prediction of a new ipad mini 5 is correct. Those of us without tons of screen real estate in the panel really benefit from an ipad on the yoke, where a full size tablet is too bulky.

  20. 6 emails... 6 emails is how long it took me to get a straight forward answer on how much it would cost me to park over the weekend at Windsor locks CT for a business trip. And after all was said and done, and I bought my mandatory 10 gal of gas to waive some of the fees, I arrive to an airplane topped off w 20 gallons of fuel at 7.30 a gal compared to my home airport of 5.20 a gal 1hr away. Some service... Am confident my interrogation skills gained from years of practice trying to figure out an FBOs fees would make me an excellent interrogator for the CIA..

  29. IMHO... the basic format is nice... If it were me, I'd paint all the browns with black. I think that would better accent and bring out the yellow... look at the nose angled photo. The angle and light makes it sorta look black and gives you an idea of what I mean...

  31. I suspect it is a "we don't have it now, and won't announce anything until it is actually there" Might also depend on what the competitors do. .. TBM has issued the update, So we will see what Cirrus will do. Then we need to tell marketing no I won't buy an Ultra since you don't support your avionics like Cirrus is they only way to have leverage. We had some discussions with Mooney reps at the Summit, and I didn't get a feel that they had a real idea that they weren't supporting the G1000 and that there were still open issues with GTX345's and the ADSB weather, FS210, things like that. either way, the OP will want to get the WAAS update since the GIA63W's would be a requirement for any future update.

  33. Thought I would share some of my before and during interior renovations on my M20k summer project! I Just purchased 922PT several months ago with the complete understanding the interior was SHOT (as you can see below). The plastics were rotten; brittle and crumbling so I purchased all New interior from Plane Plastics. I have spoken to several whom have installed the product on 172's and other Cessna models but no one from the Mooney world. All Cessna owners swear by it, I however never what the hear the words "trimmable" again and will reserve final judgment until I'm done!! I have had to climb in and out of my Mooney 2,000 times it feels like, as to work all the "Trimmable" pieces and I'm not exactly a pilot size person LOL! In my renovations I thought it would be nice to wrap all the plastics with Leather with exception of the headliner and baggage compartment. I researched a fella from Great Britain that seems to specialize in high end leathers with modern design and off they went. I have added a few pictures he sent back of the door panels done thus far and the headliner work I've completed to date. Also adding the best sound proofing and insulation everywhere! ENJOY !!!

  34. I agree with @RobertGary1 on both counts. I have never seen condensation in my tanks, nor have I ever gotten water from a hangared aircraft. Full tanks means 384lbs (64Gal) for an F model. In long distance mode I try to limit my legs to ~600nm. Most of my trips are between 300 and 500NM. There is just no reason to tanker around 2.5 to 3hrs of reserves. Plus, I have a family; 384lbs of fuel limits us to 675lbs of payload in the cabin. I keep between 120lbs (20Gal) and 240lbs (40gal) on board and fill as needed before departure. This gives me flexibility. If I'm traveling 300nm or less I can depart with 180lbs (30Gal) and put almost 900lbs in the cabin.

  36. I have an F so topping off would be a ton of fuel. Flying a Mooney with full tanks is like pulling a boat with a vette. It may serve a purpose sometimes but not common. I think outside of Mexico in 20 years I’ve topped off a few times. 6 hours of fuel isn’t needed too often. -Robert

  37. Definitely make that call to him. Brian is the reason I fly from Long Island to Texas for my annuals and spend the week working on it side by side with him. He’s an excellent teacher and pilot. He will give you plenty of guidance in the use of the GFC700 and get you comfortable with it, as well as give you pointers and things to do so you can help maintain the airplane to those standards in between annuals. 39. This one shows the same impact signature as every stall/spin event I've seen .Mooneys,Navions,Cubs, you name it...pilots compartment crushed back and cord wise crushing to spar on wings. If rotating ,than one wing more compressed than the other. This is so sad..I want to shout out to all my fellow pilots...WHEN THE ENGINE QUITS OR THE PITCH GOES POSITIVE...SHOVE THE NOSE DOWN!
