  1. I will keep this short. On June 2nd I took my last flight I’m my ol Trusty 67 F Model. Windstorm snuffed the ol girl out to soon. She will be derly missed. Until Now. Yesterday I took possession of a 86 K Rocket!! My first thoughts after 2.6 behind the fire breathing 520. Holy Wow!!!!!!!!

  3. I've miscalculated more than once and blown through final. I had it happen recently on a flight to Big Bear. When it happens I just hold the bank I had, keep the ball centered, and let the plane come around. If I have overshot so far I can't line up I'm going around. I watched this video a couple years ago when I just started my PPL. He gives the best explanation and demonstration that I have seen about a skidding turn and the forces at play.

  5. One thing that I have never liked on my E or any of the pre-J’s is the worthless pad Mooney calls a glare shield. I have dug around here and the net and haven’t seen anything other than one person that trimmed down a Comanche glare shield he had laying around (which turned out pretty nice) and a couple of people that had a new one made that extended aft a few more inches. My E has the original style windshield (non-201), which leaves no room on the glare shield for much of anything so I like the idea of extending it aft past the panel, and who knows it might even live up to its name “Glare Shield”. Another benefit of having it go past the panel a few inches is it would provide a surface for panel lighting to be mounted to, even though it would be illuminating old steam gauges. Being kind of a Jack of all trades and a master of none I started looking into fabricating a more functional glare shield, the first step was to get a template that fit the curve of the windshield and the top of the instrument panel. The template was made from poster board and is fairly straight forward, I decided it might be easier if the template was in multiple pieces so it was rough cut to fit a few inches past the center post and extent several inches aft. I cut wildly around the center post and started trimming so it would fit the curve of the windshield, once happy with the fit I flipped it over and was glad to see it fit just as well on the other side. After tracing / cutting a second pattern they were placed back on top of the panel and taped together, then a small filler was made with a slot that fit the center post and was tapped to the template. Next I traced where the instrument panels and the template intersected, after cleaning up the lines with a straight edge, the transition from left panel to radio stack was cleaned up with a couple of radii. I now had something to work with. Even though it sounds like a lot of work, it took maybe just over an hour. With a template in hand it was time to decide on how and what to make a new glare shield from, one option would be like others and just make a deeper version of what I already had, this was scraped as I wanted the use the extended area for mounting some LED lighting for the panel and I was afraid that it would begin to sag over time. I considered using a plastic or aluminum base for rigidity to help eliminate any sagging but wasn’t real keen on the idea of a thin horizontal surface facing me (knife edge). Another thing that pushed me away was it would have to have some sort of decorative covering, which I have no means of doing. I considered using fiberglass but that would involve a ton of work making a buck that would have to be damn near perfect, plus it would take sanding and painting…too much work. I ended up going back to the plastic, I could use a thermoplastic and roll a bull nose on the edge facing aft which would help eliminate sagging and the possibility of getting cut in the event of a sudden stop, its easy to work with and generally has a decretive pattern on one side. Having limited experience working with plastics and trying to think ahead it was obvious that the slight curve left to right and the tight radius on each end would have to be set before the bull nose could be rolled so a buck was still needed but it didn’t have to be as exact as with the fiberglass. Using the template I traced it out on a piece of 0.032” aluminum also extending the aft line an additional 2”. Once the aluminum was cut out all the edges were de-burred, sanded and rounded off (tight areas where taped), this was going to be test fitted several times on top of the panel and I didn’t want any sharp edges that could scratch the windshield or anything else it came in contact with. I wasn’t real concerned about the slight arch of the panel so I focused on the tight radius on each end, not owning a slip roller I had no choice but to slowly work the aluminum by hand and after several (ok a bunch) of test fits I was satisfied with the results. Climbing in and out of the plane got old real fast, luckily I was able to pass the aluminum through the storm window which saved a bunch on time. Using 1/2“ CPVC to wrap the thermoplastic around to form the bull nose would give the appearance of being approximately an inch thick, which I think will look good, but trying to get 4 bends at the right place and correct angle to each other wasn’t going to be easy, so a left, center and right were made. My plan is to run water through the CPVC to keep it cool while heating the thermoplastic for the bull nose bends, 2 internal couplings where made to join the pieces together and allow water to flow through the CPVC. I ended up making a makeshift bender for the center offset out of a 2x6 that’s been in the hangar for ages, I packed the CPVC with fine sand and capped the ends to keep it from collapsing in the bends, it was then cut and riveted to the aluminum in three places.   7. I agree completely. Nothing worse on a relationship that assessing blame. Forget it and move on. The Avemco quote was $2000 less than the other quote. It seems like almost everyone's premiums are going up this year. Your portion of the increased premium is probably +/- $1250 extra. In aviation terms that's almost free. (UPDATE: With three partners, each partner's insurance goes up $834) Things happen that's why we have insurance. If you were flying it and the engine stopped and you had to land it in a field how would you feel? I agree a bad decision lead to this, but some people take off with a slightly rough running engine and wish they hadn't. If the relationship is worth something forget about it and don't bring it up again. Your partner is probably beating themself up worse than anyone else ever would anyway.

  9. You formed a partnership to reduce costs and risks overall. If the pilot who bent metal is otherwise a good partner then I’d say you should all split the costs evenly and carry on. Like an unexpected maintenance event you could view unintentional damage as a shared risk. Next time it may be your turn.

  11. True the lineup thing... To all those who can read the numbers - the balance is fantastic on paper - and anyone can read and compute the changes of removing 35lbs off the nose and moving the CG back over an inch. What is nonetheless pleasing and surprising is the degree to which what was a nose heavy airplane becomes light in pitch like one of the lighter M20's and delight to land and maneuver. The loading envelope is more legit too.

  12. #3 for 700/800 use a different ring probe, it will read low (30°-40°). The factory probe takes bayonet position, certified (900 series) replaces it, but 700/800 cannot.#1 gets direct cooling, I have sheet metal blocking some airflow ( standard on the J) that somewhat balances it. If #1 is too cool, you could replace this with a higher piece. If the cylinder gets too cool it supposedly can foul with lead.

  13. Robert, I greatly admire your skills. I think if anybody could restore this Mooney, you’re likely the guy. I also think that you’ve asked for a consultation from a group of folks who have nowhere near your experience in resurrecting and/or building wooden aircraft. This project would be a no go for most. Judging from the pictures you posted, you are not most.

  16. Garmin just released a series of upgrades (on the 5th of September) for our GTN navigators and other G500/600 TXi displays. I am at my avionics shop now (for something else) and they told me about the update. They have upgraded 10-15 planes already and are installing the newest upgrade in my GTN750 + FS510. Highlights include: GTN Update: Decent VNav. You can now give waypoints in your flight-plan, vertical altitudes to assist with VNav planning. ONce an arrival or approach is loaded and activated, GTN automatically populates step-down altitudes or any applicable altitude restrictions. These are overridable if ATC issues something different. GTN: You now won't lose your final destination airport when loading and activating an approach - in the flight plan. GTN: Forward Looking Terrain Avoidance (FLTA) audible messages: "terrain ahead, pull up", "wire ahead", "five-hundred" GTN: Keyboard enhancements (QWERTY) GTN: Sidetone setttings GTN: user-defined waypoint as an airport, so terrain alerts are minimized.   30. Rogers Pass is 5 miles to the NW. It looks like if you were following the road it would be easy to miss the slight jig in the road. This view is looking reverse to the flight path. He was heading to Rogers Pass.

  31. The usual leak culprits are the overhead vent, the wing root seal (GuitarMaster’s reply), the door (Takair’s response) and the windows. For the wing root, a MSC told me the best way to fix that is to remove the fairing, remove the old duct tape and use Gorilla heavy duty tape layered like roof shingles and then apply a bead of ProSeal over the tape: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/ps890.php?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI492r1Ye03QIVRWx-Ch11tAu7EAQYAiABEgJVdPD_BwE I would look really close at the seals around the windows. It’s possible for them to leak there in addition to the vent seal. Also, if any of the windows have cracks in them, it could wick water in. Either replace the window or use a clear Gorilla glue on the window (both inside and outside) until you can replace it. I would also open the roof vent if you have one and see if running water into the vent shows up at the drain holes on the bottom. You could have a leak in the plenum and it is coming down behind the side panels or leaking out the drain line itself. On my F, this line runs along the pilot side and down by the baggage area.   33. I've maintained after going the flight school route paying 145 an hour dry for my instruction that I would go a different route. I'd buy a basic vfr fixed gear plane (low wing of course if you are eventually going the Mooney route) do all the things to it that a pilot in training will do - bounce, land hard, side load the gear etc. Become a proficient student and whilst learning about flying and airplane ownership in what ever time frame it takes to get your ticket, start to look for your eventual next plane. You'd have to do the fixed cost comparison in your area against using a school plane but I'd wager you'd come out ahead of the game on a total cost to get the license, but the older planes tend to hold their value - the 150 hours or so really shouldn't affect the price one could ask in resale.

So Cal Here - Got my PPL this year at over 40 with a flight club in a 172 (the way to go unless you could buy a plane first!), then Bought a Mooney M20F and I hate to say that I don't think I would want to squeeze my surfboard in. Haven't tried, but each time I get in feels a bit of a squeeze. I am 6'4" 200lbs. Any guys I have talked to here that have made a baja trip with boards have rented out a Piper Cherokee 6. Also keep in mind the plane needs the updated ELT for Mexico frequency. I am very happy that I bought a mooney for my plans of flying up and down the west coast with the wife or maybe another couple....long range (64gal fuel), fuel efficient, and fast, ....but I know that for the infrequent trips where I need more room (or to fit the whole family) would require a rental of a cherokee 6, so I plan on getting a checkout and rental arrangement for one of these. Where are you located?

  35. I updated my 500/750 last week. Lots of great new features. Just one caution, fly a practice RNAV approach or two to get use to the new vertical guidance arrows before you actually do a real approach. Learn from me. Lol.

  36. I had a similar 'wing drop' when I was doing my transition training after I bought my Mooney. I can say, it doesn't take much off center to cause a significant wing drop. I was focused on keeping the ball centered as we approached a power on stall but not perfectly centered and then it happened. The left wing dropped away. Scared the living bejesus out of me since I was expecting it to fall straight forward like every other stall I've ever done. I recovered with no issue and we did it again with no issue. Long term, I'm glad it happened. I know what it feels like, and I know how to successfuly and reflexively recover in my Mooney should the worst happen again. The instructor wanted to do stalls on my BFR and I absolutely refused unless we had a good VFR day and could get really high. There was no way I was going to 'train' my plane into a crash. I can tell another story from many years go. I was flying again after a bit of a break. I was young and thought stall training was silly. Something that was done becuase you had to. I couldn't understand why anyone could/would ignore the evidence of a stall and do nothing. That's when it happened. I was on approach and was sinking a bit faster than I wanted to and without realizing it, I was holding backpressure on the yoke to try to slow ths decent slightly and the stall horn blared and I felt the shake of an impending stall. Without thinking, full power, nose down and go around. No issues other than stained pants (not really). I then had a whole new appreciation of 1) how quickly it can happen if you aren't dilligent, 2) how imporant it is to build the reflex to recover, and 3) how important it is to stay proficient, not just current.

  37. Insurance will typically cover the cost of moving/relocating the plane including return commercial flights. Hopefully you get your airplanes moved. I wish I could help but won't be available until Friday and it might be too late by then.

  38. I’m at KPHL flying to SFO (commercial) and I showed the ladies at the counter both pictures - yours and this one. I asked which was the better picture and they both said “that one” with the cute guy standing next to the plane. As I enlarged mine to show them a closer view, both said “no! The other one!” Now I don’t like you any more. :-)

  39. I have some awesome new for you. Plane is not for sale. nothing for you to worry about. I came here to ask a simple question. Not for your condescending attitude. I got my answer, and I ordered the second NAV / Strobe. That same argument can be used against switching all 3 tires because 1 has a flat spot. it doesn't make sense. I thought each wing had 1 power supply. I didn't have the knowledge that 1 power supply powers both wings. I switched out landing lights to LED's at a different time, and nothing happened. There is nothing wrong with me slowly switching out lights to LED's over time as the original lights burn out. In less than 6 months they'll all be LED's. There's a difference between managing your cash and being a cheap bastard. I aspire to be as talented as you one day.

Somebody wanted to know how committed you are to your twin engine beauty... See any other fence sitters considering getting into a really nice Long Body Mooney around?   42. Finally made the trip over to Provincetown, MA today. I took along my favorite copilot. We brought the bikes along for ground transportation. We got to fly directly over Logan on the trip over. (That has never happened and was kind of neat) Ptown in the distance. It was a grey cool day in Ptown but we had a good time anyway.

What's obvious to me is that being "Director of Maintenance for a very high end corporate flight department" doesn't translate to knowing anything about how to care for and maintain an aging fleet of vintage airplanes. But then I wouldn't take my vintage BMW to the dealership for service either. Nobody's perfect, and mistakes can be made. But the accusations made against Don in this thread just don't hold any water for those of us who've known him and have had our planes maintained by him for years.

  44. Man August was a terrible month for our flying. After finishing July away from home the Mendocino complex fires broke out in Mendocino county quickly moving into Lake county. The TFR put our airport out of commission and delayed our scheduled annual. Finally was able to get that taken care of only to have the transponder quit while having VFR cert completed. Another couple weeks pass and am finally able to get back to flying. We took a needed trip for supplies and flew over the Ranch fire area. We have seen 40 70 even 100k acre fires before but this on at over 400 thousand acres and still burning is really beyond comprehension. Smoke was so thick approaching Willows that we couldn't see the field until under 3 miles out. I think my flying was good considering the long break.

  45. Do you have a yoke clock? Pull it out and look at the back. How long have you owned the plane? There is no guarantee that this little piece isn’t a relic from a long since replaced instrument.

  49. Turning final at Kern Valley next to Lake Isabella a couple weeks ago. Also have video that I "think" I'm about done editing. It's a fun approach right along the hills on the west side of the valley.
