  1. I am the excited, proud new owner of N803RM, the 1969 Mooney M20F lovingly cared for by another MooneySpace'r for the past 11 years. A lot of you probably remember my "E of dubious provenance," and her ignominious end. I'm not going to slam that plane; if I'd been more experienced, she may not have ended the way she did. (I believe the Swiss Cheese model played out in that situation. I do think there were problems with the plane, but looking back - and as fully discussed with the FAA - there were things I could have done differently.) This is different. My "E" was a project. This F is turnkey. She needs nothing. ADS-B, WAAS, freshly sealed tanks, AP... she's equipped. Gorgeous inside and out. Purrs. Picked her up in Yosemite this morning, flew her to PRB for the 53(!) Mooney fly-in, then brought her home. Got a hangar for her at Torrance (KTOA). If anyone's on the field tomorrow, stop by, 1300-1900... (PM me for details)

  2. Speaking of weather, the weather Saturday for our meet was BEAUTIFUL. No turbulence, winds light, temperature perfect, whereas the weather Friday OR Sunday was not! Somebody was watching out for us. We picked a great day to do this. Great seeing everyone!!!

  3. please don't get politics involved on this website. I get its a joke, but someone won't and this thread will go downhill very quickly, like all the other threads that involve politics.

  4. Agreed. I spoke to a guy with a modded blue and white C that was parked near me that flew 10,000 miles to the fly in!! He was from Salem Oregon and admittedly he took the looooooonnnngg way to get to the meet. Basically the stop in Paso Robles to the fly in was his last stop before home on a trip that had him circumnavigate the Gulf of Mexico. I don't know all the details, but it was something like Oregon to Colorado, to florida, over Cuba, down the Caribbean island chain to Venezuela and then over to Cozumel, Mexico, then back to California then to Paso Robles for the fly in and when he took off, he was headed to his home again in Salem Oregon. I think that qualifies as the longest distance flown to the fly in!! Sadly he showed up just as lunch was finishing and people were already starting to depart. So he pretty much just gassed up and left. I was lucky enough to talk to him and hear about his adventure flying (this is not the only crazy long trip he has done with his Mooney) while he was waiting for the fuel truck to show up. Sadly, I can't remember his name because I suck like that and I can't remember his N number either. I do remember it was real short and I think it had a 2 in it. I'm sure Phil could figure out the details on this guy. Maybe he can share some of his stories and get his well deserved award.

  5. Friday morning I went down to the west coast of the Baja of Mexico with the Flying Samaritans, Tucson, AZ chapter. Our clinic is at El Rosario and we stay in San Quintin. I returned yesterday morning. I'm on the board of directors and usually make 5-6 trips a year. This was Saturday at 7PM from my hotel room. http://www.flyingsamaritansaz.org/Tucson/index.html

  6. Richard Brown was kind enough to write up a story about his families trip to the West Coast Mooney Club fly-in at KPRB on April 14, 2018. It was a spectacular day. Check out his story below and join our club here on Mooney Space and also please join us on the West Coast Mooney Club Group page on Facebook. Enjoy the story below.

  10. Those of you who have been following the chronicles of Mooney Six One Zulu already know that she suffered extensive damage to the wing back in September when my partner ran off the runway while re-positioning her away from Hurricane Irma. Nearly eight months and tens of thousands of dollars later she is back home. Work was completed by Air Services at West Georgia Regional (KCTJ) and they took very good care of her.

  11. We flew our 252 from Germany to the southern most tip of South America and back again between September 17 and March 18. This was our route: Many may have heard about our trip via fb, but anyway, maybe there are members here who haven't and are interested in a report. I've written continuously on a European GA forum, here is the link: https://www.euroga.org/forums/trips-airports/9174-to-the-end-of-the-world-and-back-the-whole-story#post_176978 (I hope it's OK to post a link to another forum here)

  13. OK, not Mooney efficiency but not bad for what it is. +/- 150 KTAS on less than 16 GPH (9.375 NMPG) at 7,500 ft this morning. OR I can get 175 KTAS on 20 GPH (8.75 NMPG) OR 190 KTAS on 24 GPH (7.9 NMPG). In my 231 at 7,500 ft I get 155 KTAS on 9.0 GPH (17 NMPG) - but I can't fit six people in the Mooney and it doesn't have a useful load over 1700 lb either.

  15. I just talked to Select Aircraft. It turns out that a bushing came loose on the right mag that allowed the distributer to slip out of timing. BTW, even though it had been 4 years sense he overhauled it, he gave me a very good discount on the repair because he was the last one to work on it.

  29. My team and I are thinking about sponsoring a Fly In here in Lakeport, CA. We are thinking about having a few static displays to play with to include Garmin products, Avidyne products, Aspen, Artex, Speed Mod items, etc. Would anyone be interested in attending and if so, what would you like to see? We are wanting to show everyone what is out there and available and to give everyone an opportunity to play with the new toys here on the ground also. What are your thoughts? Greg Baker Lasar, Inc.

  30. Yep! While waiting, I will put on my headset, then wind and set my yoke clock, aligning the red and white hands to track tank changes and flight time. It's usually good to go after that.

  32. I have done a fair amount of homework on this topic and a far as the FAA is concerned, the conversion is allowed without any additional approvals because there are three engines listed on the type certificate and all are approved engines for use, and there are no serial number limitations listed on the type certificate. As further evidence, if you look on the type cert for K models, note 17 specifically calls out an engine replacement for the TSIO-360-GB series engine to a Lb series engine, because everything is called out as serial number specific on the K's in the type cert. This is not so for the J's, or for any other instance where an air frame has a call out specific to a serial number. Note 12 on the type cert also clearly spells out engine can be converted, for the A1B6-D to the A3B6-D. We have not done an engine conversion, but a replacement. Additionally, there is no conversion of the air frame to hang the A3B6. When I talked to Mooney, there are no specific changes needed to be made to hang the motor as everything has already been spelled out in parts manuals for the A3B6,(prop gov bracket and hoses), where service bulletins are issued with additional instructions if there has not previously been written communication from Mooney addressing the service needed to be spelled out. Lastly, the type certificate is the enforcing document in the US, not the parts manual. I was wary enough about the conversion to ask a ton of questions of the popular Mooney service centers before going down this road as they have done a ton of these conversions themselves, and they all responded with they did no additional paperwork or approvals because of how the type certificate is written.

  34. Thanks, all the credit goes to @mooneyflyer and @MrRodgers. Phil gave it a place to happen and was an amazing host. Mike created the West Coast Mooney Club, worked on sponsors, got the message out, etc... Without the two of them it would have probably been 5-10 Mooneys somewhere having lunch, which would have been fun, but with them it was awesome!! I can't even imagine the hours they put into making it the success that it was.

  37. Having transported a number of dogs that I have never met from my plane to a building, a runaway is always a risk, even leashed and harnessed ones can escape even the strongest leash holder. Many volunteers who do transports have often dove for these dogs mostly successfully, some not, and unfortunately generally wind up getting put down if they're not recaptured. I've had 1 runaway even with all of my experience (fortunately he got loose after we got him off the tarmac and we got him with the help of a lot of people, would have been harder to not possible if his escape was on the ramp). Many animals have been unfortunately killed or put down because of this type of running around an airport (I don't think many airports carry tranquilizer guns, or can wait until animal control gets there if there's an airport safety issue) Some dogs completely lose it when they get their feet on solid ground, with all of the noise from the airport, they may not even hear their owners. And with the wide open space they see, some dogs are absolute Houdini's at getting out of the best fitting collars and even harnesses, suddenly making their moves and they're loose. A person who brings an animal on an airport needs to be responsible for that animal. I can see how a dog owner can think that their dog always obeys and will always stay right beside them no matter what, as some dogs will like the rare ones you see hanging out at airports. But with all of the noise at an airport, the fear, they may not even hear their owner, sometimes tough to predict what would happen when an animal gets put into that environment. I wouldn't trust any dog off a leash on airport grounds unless its done it many many times before on a leash successfully, but even with that, I think there's still some risk. John

  38. Great photos. Love the attention to the details and design of our planes. Thanks so much for posting this.

  39. The problem with airport dogs off leash is the distraction to the other pilot that don’t know how amazing and perfectly well trained these dogs are. When they prop strike a taxi way light or clip a wing taxing because they are watching someone’s off leash dog worrying that it may run out and getting chopped up it cost the dog owner nothing!

  40. You might just want to verify if the trim indicators are actually correct. My indicators were so far off that I had the same issue. Turns out after I had re rigged the plane the plane was a lot less of a mule to get to climb or descend.

  43. First to post, well it did happen and will post some pics here and on today's flight thread soon. My wife counted 50 Mooneys on the ramp in front of the event hangar and there were a few others parked in a different area because they ran out of space. Could not have had better weather for the flying and the event. Met a few Mooney space folks but so many was impossible to meet them all. Thank you Phil and Mike and your better halves and every one who helped put this together. Was a fantastic turn out and we overwhelmed Oakland center as our airplanes began to depart.

  44. Same applies to jet traffic which is supposed to fly the uncontrolled pattern 500' above prop traffic. No matter where it happens, jets end up descending through slower traffic. Never has made sense to me.
    1 point
  45. That leaves you descending into downwind, a major sin per every CFI I've flown with. And none of them have said anything when I make a proper midfield crossover entry at TPA from a mile or two out. Primary CFI, CFII, Mooney transition, flight reviews, even the MAPA PPP. But for God's sake, please don't descend into the downwind!
    1 point
  46. Exactly. I usually make 1 extra call since most pilots aren't expecting it. "XYZ Traffic, Cool Mooney 10 miles out... will make midfield entry, then left downwind for R/W x"

  47. Says Steingar, if you really feel the need to tell your shop how to do an annual it's time for a new shop. Sorry guys, we can do most of this stuff ourselves. What we're paying for is expertise.

  48. Damn, who pissed you off? I know the advantages of the digital options but what I don't know is why you would basically slam someone you know nothing about. You said you had no input, if that was true you would have just moved along, but you didn't, you just had to say something even though it was of no help to me, then you top it off by calling me a Cheap Bastard.... Unbelievable
