  1. After my last post I felt a little remiss about not mentioning the safety issue of continued flight. Thirty minutes is a very short flight that probably most would be tempted to continue. But recognize a loss of MAP as experienced here is very significant. A small leak, whether induction or exhaust, will not typically cause a significant loss of MAP. A large leak is more likely with significant loss of MAP, and consequently if its exhaust the threat of fire is very real and there is no more time critical emergency than fire. All this adds up to the need to divert to a nearby field before things get much worse. Maybe it turns out to be a minor induction leak, but you just never know. Luckily these kinds of turbo related issues are pretty rare, but we need to diligent about getting down if and when they do occur. Sure don’t mean to be critical of Bryan in this instance, this was really meant for others that have yet to experience such an emergency. Hopefully very few will. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  2. Friend of mine took these as we landed back in Tennessee. I took my manager and assistant manager to Gulf Shores for a admin retreat and to take a look at some possible new business locations. The friend that took these as we got home is not a professional photographer, but I thought they came out super clean and clear. old Mooney is looking pretty good to be 40+ years old. I'm the old guy flying. -Tom

  7. I felt the same way. But after flying around with ADS the last few days I am glad I put it in. No more stratus. Flying around Daytona beach is some of the worst traffic I have seen. Much worse than Los Angeles or NYC.

  8. heres the FAR 43 reference Removing and replacing self-contained, front instrument panel-mounted navigation and communication devices that employ tray-mounted connectors that connect the unit when the unit is installed into the instrument panel, (excluding automatic flight control systems, transponders, and microwave frequency distance measuring equipment (DME). The approved unit must be designed to be readily and repeatedly removed and replaced, and pertinent instructions must be provided. Prior to the unit's intended use, an operational check must be performed in accordance with the applicable sections of part 91.

  9. Not all sellers are like this. I have often said if you want to sell your plane fast, simply price it at what you, the most knowledgeable person of the planes warts and curves, yourself would pay for it. A seller has to be honest with himself here. Be upfront about all the planes warts and treat the prospective buyer like he has a brain and can think for himself, and like a person who doesn't like to be shafted.or conned. Now if a buyer wants to further "lowball", then he risks loosing a good plane at a fair price if the seller decides not to fund his want. If the PPI turns up airworthiness items, these should be on the seller. Disclosed warts should be on the buyer. The buyer needs to remember he is buying a used plane and will need to accept a standard of less than new unless he is willing to pay new money.

  13. Bryan, What Milo is pointing out to you is the method of downloading data from your JPI... In your pic, The 1/8” socket at the top/left of your JPI has a matching plug connected to a serial plug, that can be connected to a USB plug that can be used with any computer... check around your plane’s interior pockets for any plugs and wires the PO may have left for you... Check the JPI website for all the details on the various plugs and cords and programs that you can use... Since you was.... You might be interested in another service that some MSers use... for your consideration only... https://www.savvyaviation.com/savvyaviation-home/savvy-services/savvymx/ This helps you get the most out of your JPI. It can pinpoint what happened, when it happened, and how long things may have been going on.... If you are not an engineer, mechanic or computer person... Savvy has some help for that too. Paul can let you in on better details than this if you are interested... PP pilot working on my own skills, not a mechanic or Savvy sales guy... Best regards, -a-

  14. The exhaust soot found by the induction panel is really a sign of a significant exhaust leak which of course will rob you of MAP. As others have said this is very serious since the exhaust leak, once it develops, can be like a torch and grow in size causing more damage and eventually an engine fire and or failure. Given the location it’s more likely a popped or leaking cyl exh gasket around #3 but could also be an exhaust tube or turbo itself. This engine isn’t very prone to cracking of the turbo case, but it happens. Likely not the V clamp, since that is lower and further aft. BUT you can and should be gently wiggling the tail pipe with every pre-flight to check the security of the V clamp. It shouldn’t move. You don’t need to decowl the engine to check the V band clamp - just grab the tail pipe to check its secure. This is an important pre-flight check! (And should be covered in transition training on all turbo’s) Getting back to the exhaust leak, it should be very obvious with the cowling removed - just look for the source of any grey soot you find. Looking for any evidence of leakage is part of every 25 hr service or oil change. The only normal location is on your belly aft of the exhaust tail pipe. Unless the turbo is the source of the leak it is likely fine. Let us know what you find. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  18. UPDATE: Was able to go out to the plane today after a great Easter Holiday with the family and inspect the issue. After reading your comments, I am very thankful to be able to be here after what could have been bad. I first removed the inspection panel but nothing visible we could tell besides the soot aft of the access panel on the cowl as shown in the picture above. We continued to remove the cowl and my mechanic just happen to stop by the airport to drop something off to a hanger neighbor. Great timing! We got the cowl off and no visible signs of anything on the inside of the cowl - nothing burnt or discolored as evidence of anything - to the cowl. After a quick look at the turbo and V-Band clamps, all is tight and no indication of leaks or cracks which also confirmed my pre-flight check at the beginning of the day. All was very solid and in-tact. Following the exhaust up, we found the source pretty quick - it was the exhaust gaskets blown on #3 and #5. In fact the outboard exhaust stud and nut was missing from #3 completely. #5's outboard nut was backed out and not tight at all. It appears that these exhaust gaskets were the "no-blow" style as they were still in-tact but will not be re-used. Very lucky to not have caught fire or worse! We are ordering all new NUTs and Gaskets for all 6 cylinders even though we might only need to replace 3 sets of them and at least several studs to replace the missing ones and the ones that need to be replace for removal of the system. I have the part numbers for the Gaskets (630365) and the Nuts (22022) - "using two gaskets per exhaust port, concave sides together" per the Continental SB14-8. I need to find the replacement stud part number. Anyone have that manual digital for the TSIO-360-SB they could PM me? Or a link? My A&P that happen to be out at the airport on Easter Sunday and gave me an hour of his time to take a look said he has the manual in his office and could get it tomorrow. He said after replacement of these parts we would pressure test the exhaust system for leaks and compression check the jugs. I have learned some very good lessons in this deal and hope someone else does, too. Engine monitors are invaluable - trust what they are telling you and process the information to stay as safe as possible. Thank you everyone for your help in the opinions and insight into the possibilities of what could have been a lot worse.

  23. I will say it again , It is STC'd , It is illegal to install it without an IA , you cannot file the 337 for the STC , unless you are an IA ....If you install it , and you are not an IA , or an IA does not sign off the 337 and logbook , it is not a legal install....... I am an A&P , I am not an IA , I can not legally install it.....

  27. Something we might all check is the female receiver holes in the floor where the seat pins engage. My old E model didn’t latch as good as it should so when I took the seats out I noticed the holes had partially filled with debris and dirt and oil from someone lubricating through the years. I had to dig out the build up with a small pick and blow them clean. Things worked way better after that exercise.

  30. Does anyone here have any experience with these? I need my seat all the way back so that I'm not doing Cirque du Soliel type gyrations to get into the LH seat. I can reach the yoke and could push forward with the seat in the furthest back position but I can't reach the rudder pedals enough to do anything meaningful with them. I am thinking of doing what @aviatoreb mentioned above and get a nice piece of hardwood the right width and router/sand it. I can keep in between the seats on the ground and slide it behind my seat after getting in. Having it between the seats will ensure that I don't forget to put it behind the seat as part of my pre-takeoff checklist (and descent) is to check the area between the seats to make sure it is clear for the Johnson Bar.

  35. You will likely see just the opposite in temp readings although not too much. Putting the piggy-back thermocouple on will read slightly lower than the other cylinder temps.

  36. Good to know; I’ll look for that. My #2 CHT reads higher than normal b/c that is where the factory bayonet prob is located and the JPI is on the bottom spark plug. Piggy-back adapter ordered to replace the spark plug to take its reading from the same location as the factory probe.

  37. One note... if you have a lot of rail wear showing... you might be missing a wheel on(or off) the chair. If the plastic wheels are still all there, a prior owner may have replaced them... My C shed some chair wheels, then beat up the rails. It wasn’t obvious to the new owner that the axles for the wheels, weren’t the wheels... Goofy note, but i’m Probably not alone... I have been known to put things on the floor back there. That came after the 90s Cessna seat failure... Best regards, -a-

  39. Bryan, Once you get the cowls off look at the intake tubes and rubber connectors as well. One of the clams holding a rubber connector came loose on my 231 and I had similar symptoms excluding the soot around the turbo. Geoff.

  40. Hoping to fly out to see my sister during her new home construction overlooking the Puget Sound near Port Angeles this summer. I will be stopping to visit one of my "earlier in life" (military) best friends in Ontario, OR. We may be able to stop in the huge metropolis of John Day on our way from Ontario to Port Angeles. My wife would be game too if she get's to see the new addition to your family :>) Tom

  41. Well, It's been quite a while since I've posted on this subject but thought this weeks progress might be interesting for some of you that have been interested in the project. All the body work is done and now it's getting some color. A lot of the prep work for the interior has been completed during the last 6 weeks as well. I have a very unique paint scheme that Cris at Scheme Designers "NAILED" and Brad (Airframes, Inc) and his painter are very excited about. Something different than the typical airplane paint scheme. I will elaborate later as that takes shape on the airplane, but for now we're at least getting some colors. Tom

  42. I'm aluminum tubing it, and quite jealous! Delta ATL-->BDL on Sunday, home yesterday; today was American, ATL-->FTW, continuing tomorrow FTW-->PEK-->SZX. Coming home next Friday. Back to back like this, the contrast between airlines is quite dramatic--American is all about audio recordings instead of people talking into the intercom, and the least little turbulence turned o the seatbelt light, played another recording and had stews prowling the aisle chanting "seatbelts, seatbelts". Delta is defintely better . . . Only 18 hours with American tomorrow, then 21 more home next week. At least the boss sprung for Economy Plus. Please post lots of flights this weekend, so I can enjoy them vicariously from the land of almost no GA. Soon as I recover from jet lag, or sometime Sunday or Monday week while I'm off, one little short Mooney is gonna get some exercise!

  44. Yeah, I agree with all of the above. That's what I would like to do, in the perfect world where I had time and a place to put the airplane. The mechanic is an on-airport guy that does all the work in peoples' hangars, so I can just tow it to his place. Last night I may have worked out some options for short-term storage. That will greatly open up my options for getting some work done on it and getting it ferryable. Hopefully, anyway!

  46. No , I would have bought yours , if it wasn't a thousand miles away , In fact , I turned it down , before you took it..... I also talked the guy you bought it from , into taking your offer , (which was about 1800 less than than he wanted to sell for ) for the reasoning , that it wasn't worth a few thousand dollars , to possibly sit on the plane for a few more years..... I think he was an EAA guy or something ..... Been a while , but for some reason I remember EAA or Young eagles associated with that plane...... Also the BIG ONE your plane was totally together and in tact....
